I'm loving the Alesis Playmate Vocalist! It's easy to use and works with most CD's. Some songs work better than others, depending on how the vocals were recorded. Most of the time you can't even tell that the vocal was ever there, especially if you are singing over the music. This is a great value at this price and will save you bundles if you normally buy karaoke/accompaniment CD's to sing along with. This little machine will pay for itself in savings in no time!

I received this machine after reading all the bad reviews. Yes this is not something you would use in a proffessional capacity. When you cancel the vocals you also muffle the rest of the music. The drums become non existent and the bass rumbles in and out. When you plug both the right and left channels into one mixer using 2 channels for some reasons it trys to cancel each channel out. I had to plug one channel into another source. This made a big difference in the overall sound. I played around with this gadget and found the 1st cancel setting to be the best. As long as you can boost the mid and highs. I will probably keep it for just learning songs on since you can slow it down without changing the key. If anyone else has any ideas or other options for equipment that can cancel out vocals let me know.

Great Product - Accept the Limitations!

By Big Al-uBqDT

from Guildford England

I use this virtually every day - through a regular instrument amp and speaker and the CD player is fine. In fact the CD functions are worth the price alone and are great for learning tracks because they allow you to slow tracks up in the right pitch.Fantastic value for money -

By Retrosurfer1959

This is a well made piece of hardware substantial look and feel sadly it just doesn't perform. the mute is terrible and scratchy reduction of overall sound is not reduction of vocals. I bought this as a stupid buy of the day and still felt it was a waste of money the function just sn't there

Disappointing

By the music man-R9sy9

from warrenton, VA

The vocal reduction worked only about as well as I expected, having tried numerous similar products over the years, Useless in any professional way. What I needed was variable speed, pitch, and the ability to transpose performance tracks to another key. It does all of this but not with out a definitive alteration to the quality of the music. there is a pulsation or fluttering of the whole signal that makes the altered signal unusable for any pro application. I didn't even find the the quality of the CD player itslef to be of quality. Don't bother, disappointing from a name I typically respect.

Very dissatisfied with Playmate quality

By Jemini Music

from New Jersey

I bought one Alesis Playmate last year and had to return it right away, as it wasn't working properly right out of box. It was replaced by another one, which started to malfunction after only 7 months. The product would sometimes rapidly change keys by itself when playing CD's and sometimes would not start playing the CD unless turned off and on. Since it was under warranty, I brought it to the service center, who could not recreate the problem, saying that they couldn't fix it if it wasn't broken, despite my protests. Alesis refused to replace the unit, even though it was less than a year old. I am now stuck with an inferior, malfunctioning piece of equipment.

Don't buy the vocalist! A complete disappointment!

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

It does not really even reduce vocals. It muffles the vocals and the instrumentals. It doesn't change pitch without serious reduction of musical quality and major distortion. I don't see how they can sell this product that does not perform and not stand by it when a customer wants to return it. Now I'm stuck with a very expensive, glorified CD player.

PlayMate

By TL Sturgill

from Spring Hill, FL

It's not perfect, but I wasn't expecting that. Some recorded CDs respond VERY well, some not, but the makers of this product have no control over the music indistry standards for recording. Even if you only used it for a karaoke machine, it has features that others do NOT have. The looping feature is just "COOL".

Does NOT Eliminate Vocals

By Electrableu

from Washington DC

I received this yesterday and have tried it on about 25 different CDs so far... it does not remove vocals at all on my classic jazz CDs (Ella, Billie, Frank, Louis, etc.) or most other CDs. The only ones where it works even remotely tend to be punk rock type music with loud fuzz guitar...so if that's your kind of music maybe this would work for you. Otherwise, take a pass! I will be returning mine asap.

Not What I Expected

By David-yd8jp

from New York

Nice concept but I was disappointed with the overall performance of the product. It did not remove vocals but just muffled them. The transposer worked but distorted soundtracks I was trying to use. I didn't try the mic reverb effects because that was not the primary reason I bought it. Probably O.K. for Karaoke but not for a soloist who doesn't want a muffled lead singer in the background. The Alesis website promised vocal reduction and that was all I got at best.
