Strings might be okay, but technical info is confusing

By Robin Plank

from Indiana

Comments about Black Diamond N54 White Nylon Soprano Ukulele Strings:

I bought these Black Diamond Soprano Ukelele strings for back-up when I purchased our first ukelele, so haven't tried to use them yet. But I referred to their packaging because I was confused--didn't realize the 4th string on the uke (closest to the chest) was thinner and higher in pitch than the ones next to it (unlike guitars, violins and cellos). I thought my uke may have been strung wrong so was comparing the gauge sizes to the Black Diamond strings.

I was further confused to see that Black Diamond listed these soprano strings as E-1st, F#-2nd, D-3rd and A-4th. The ukelele book listed soprano strings as A-1st, E-2nd, C-3rd and G-4th. Plus the strings inside the package had no labels other than 1st string, 2nd string, etc.--no letter names and no gauge sizes. Since the strings on other styles of ukeles can vary (tenor and baritone), I wondered if Black Diamond had packed the wrong strings.

I finally discovered on Wikipedia (key word--ukelele) that soprano strings can be tuned both of the ways listed above, and tuning to the one-step-higher list gives a sweeter sound. There are other tunings, and this all seems pretty complex to me.

I think Black Diamond should have listed both letter sets as names for their their strings and also completely identified each string in its individual package. I am assuming they will work for either tuning since they are only one step away in pitch. They were made in the USA so we can't blame the overseas crowd this time.

I hope this eliminates confusion for some other beginners.

A wee bit disappointing.

Comments about Black Diamond N54 White Nylon Soprano Ukulele Strings:

Well I bought these strings to try something a little different (I've bought the Martin ukulele strings previously) and when I got these strings, I wound them on my Lanikai ukulele the same way I usually do. The part that disappoints me is how it's been a week and they still fail to keep in tune (my Martins began tuning immediately) and they also sound dull, pluncky, and, still, out- of - tune. I'm trying not to rant here, but I just wanted to say that I'm ordering Martin strings and I'm sad that I won't't get to hear my little ukulele's beautiful tone until then.

Better value than I thought

Comments about Black Diamond N54 White Nylon Soprano Ukulele Strings:

These strings have no ball ends, which I was looking for, but tying isn't hard. But they are double the necessary length for soprano ukes, so for the price you're really getting two sets of strings.

Pretty good

Comments about Black Diamond N54 White Nylon Soprano Ukulele Strings:

I used these to replace the stock strings on my Lanikai Soprano ukulele. I gotta say, when I first strummed them, they sounded amazing. Beautiful tone, beautiful resonance. However, I had also purchased felt picks for the uke with the strings, and for whatever reason they don't play nice together. All in all, I'd recommend them if you don't use felt picks.
