OVERVIEW

Go for the gold.

Following tremendous feedback received for the Gold 12", Celestion realized there was also a need for a guitar speaker that conveyed the Alnico mellowness of the original Blue, with the speed and response of a 10" driver.

The 40W Celestion G10 Alnico Gold guitar speaker is the ultimate 10" speaker, blending unmistakable Alnico class with a rich low-end, creamy midrange and vintage chiming top-end. Springy, warm, revealing, and highly expressive, the 40W Celestion speaker can be used singly or in pairs to add a classy sheen to any amp, or in a 4x10 configuration for higher volume depth, warmth and shimmer, with less of the boom associated with 4x12 cabinets.

Celestion are renowned for high quality loudspeakers, used on stage and in clubs, theaters and other venues the world over. From early radio loudspeakers to complex sound reinforcement systems, Celestion speakers have helped to shape the history of sound reproduction.

Since the company's birth in 1924, Celestion has paid meticulous attention to every product detail, combining innovative ideas with skillful craftsmanship.

Today, Celestion continues to manufacture loudspeakers and components for many different applications. Incorporating both modern and traditional technology, the company incorporates years of experience into advancing the future of loudspeaker design with great success.

i've been through dozens of 10" speakers trying to find the perfect fit for my old 6g2 princeton amp. none of the high end 10" speakers i tried quite did it for me: too loud, to farty, to peaky, etc. i even tried a celestion blue with a new baffle: too much speaker for the little cab IMO. the g10 gold is perfection. not too loud, strong bass at any level, and the blue's signature warm trebles. this speaker chimes and compresses in a way that reminds me of the lofi, nostalgic warmth of an old record player.

This is a high quality speaker that I just did not bond with. It was purchased for use in a Fender Princeton Reverb Reissue. I read many positive reviews (including ones for this specific amp and speaker combination) and thought I would give this highly regarded speaker a try. I gained thickness, volume, and midrange, but lost articulation, which I need. No amount of EQ adjustment would give me a sound I liked. I followed the recommended break in process from Celestion. I put the stock Jensen C10R back in and it sounds so much better...to me. There was nothing wrong with the G10 Gold, it just was not what I liked. So your mileage may vary. Obviously a lot of folks really like this speaker, so perhaps their preferences are just different than mine.

A Perfect 10?

Comments about Celestion G10 Gold 40W, 10" Alnico Guitar Speaker:

Good 10s are hard to come by and this offering from Celestion is one of the better speakers available. Tone wise the mids and highs are pretty pronounced; the bass is there but not quite as strong as you might like: you've really got to like that old school Alnico sound to really dig these horns...if you do, all is golden. I'd prefer slightly lower wattage and a lower price, but what else is new? All in all a nice speaker and one of the few Celestions still made in the UK. Worth a serious look.

Comments about Celestion G10 Gold 40W, 10" Alnico Guitar Speaker:

I got one of these little babies and dropped it in a Mesa Boogie 5:25 Express. All I can say is WOW!This baby blows the doors off the stock Mesa speaker. Notes jump out at you, crisp and punchy. No more pharting out on the deep bass notes. Literaly like taking a blanket off your amp!

Comments about Celestion G10 Gold 40W, 10" Alnico Guitar Speaker:

I installed two of these in my two Fender Super Champ X2's not really knowing what to expect. What these speakers do to a Super Champ X2 is truly amazing. Tight pronounced bass notes and sweet mids and highs. Well worth the price IMO.
Note: When installing these speakers in a Super Champ be aware that the protective power tube "cage" that is firmly attached to the upper rear valance panel will rub against the G10's speaker frame. This problem is probably unique to the Super Champ. I raised the valance panel up approximately 1/4" giving a bit of clearance between tube cage and speaker frame as well as maintaining proper clearance between the top of the power tube and the bottom of the cage. With the new power handling capacity of the Celestions I assumed there would be more heat generated by the tube circuitry when the amp is used at higher volumes so I purchase a couple of 4" computer desk fans and directed the air flow towards the interior of the amp as a precautionary measure.

Comments about Celestion G10 Gold 40W, 10" Alnico Guitar Speaker:

I just installed this incredible speaker in a Super Champ XD and I am stunned. It sounds like a different amplifier. I have tried Jensen's, Eminence RC, Blue Fender's, Gold fendre's, Ceramic Celestions and none even come close to what this speaker can do. I now can get clean beautiful feedback on the clean channel. The 16 presets are all improved across the entire spectrum. At every volume and for every idiom and or genre, this speaker just delivers. Don't waste another second trying less expensive so called "Upgrades" buy this one speaker and your music will sound better from one second to the next. I will be buying 2 gold 12's for my 1966 Bandmaster cabinet that I use with a Seymour Duncan Convertible.
      WOW, WHAT A SPEAKER!

Comments about Celestion G10 Gold 40W, 10" Alnico Guitar Speaker:

This very loud alnico driver has made my Tone King Falcon able to express an assortment of harmonic overtones and complexities that I wasn't experiencing before. Before it sounded nice, but I already knew some details were being taken away from a extremely well designed circuit. When I put this speaker in, my amp is a lot louder, and after 50 or so hours of playing, I must say that the character of this amp has only gotten better. When played clean, the crispiness of this amp extends across all frequencies better, with a faint bell like chime that only couples to the amps sound. The bass is defined much better, the mids sing with more complexity, and the top chimes a bit in a sweet way. When overdriven, the character is still there and the harmonics are also overdriven, very nice! I can imagine this speaker making any circuit express its qualities a lower end speaker won't allow. Only sounds better when you break it in more, becomes more organic and fluid.

Comments about Celestion G10 Gold 40W, 10" Alnico Guitar Speaker:

I recently purchased a Mesa Boogie Express 5:25 1x10" combo amp with this 8 ohm speaker upgrade in it. The previous owner replaced the stock MESA speaker with this and it absolutely shines. I also own a Mesa Boogie Express 5:50 2x12" combo with G12M Greenbacks (Made in England). I play an American HSS strat and a G&L Legacy Deluxe HSS. They sound very similar and really shine through both of my MESA amps.

Having this single speaker allows me to bring the much smaller Express 5:25 rig to really small venues and still fill the room with clear, crisp sound without having to mic anything. As another reviewer said, it's nice that this particular speaker is still made in England. All my speakers are English Celestions and I think the quality surpasses new, Chinese Celestion speakers.

I still need to break this speaker in since the previous owner of the amp rarely played it but I imagine it will only sound better with time. I gave it a run at a small venue gig last weekend and it sounded great, especially the clean tones! You would think a 30 watt amp with a 10" speaker wouldn't have great cleans but this thing sounds amazing; it had hints of Fender and Vox chime. At half volume I was loud and still had headroom.

The only bad thing I can say about it is it doesn't sound too great on the 5 watt bedroom setting but that might have to do with the fact that it isn't broken in yet. It also may be the fact that it's a 40 watt speaker and needs to pushed. My Express 5:50 with the 2x12" Greenbacks sounds good at 50 watts and 5 watts but they are only 25 watts each and are well-broken in. It could also be the tube difference since the 5:50 has 6L6 tubes and the 5:25 has EL84 tubes. Let's see what the future holds...

Comments about Celestion G10 Gold 40W, 10" Alnico Guitar Speaker:

Great sound in a Super Champ XD, tamed the fizzy of the stock speaker and gave the superb vintage warmth Alnico is known for.
The Celestion eliminated the "practice amp" sound and took the amp into a tonal sphere that the lowest common denominator speaker the amp shipped with, can't create.
Broke it in loud and clean for a few hours and the sound has improved daily. Alnico has a sound all it's own and if you like it, this speaker delivers.

Comments about Celestion G10 Gold 40W, 10" Alnico Guitar Speaker:

This speaker sounds great in my 5w/1w Marshall DSL5C combo practice amp. I have now tried a ceramic speaker upgrade and an alnico upgrade in this amp and I prefer the alnico hands down. There were merits to both, but here is my experience:

I upgraded the cheap stock 10" Celestion Ten-30 speaker in my Marshall to a Celestion G10 Vintage after I bought the amp and it improved the sound, but I always wondered what an alnico speaker would sound like. The cost of the Gold 10 was prohibitive, but after 12 months of playing with the Vintage I finally bit the bullet and bought the Gold. After first putting it in the amp I wasn't sure I liked the changes; it broke up a little differently in frequencies I wasn't used to, so I pulled it and put the 10" Vintage back in the amp. After playing the Vintage again I instantly decided the Gold 10 was better. I haven't looked back since. If you buy this, do the switch and hear for yourself.

The ceramic Vintage has more bass, but everything else about the Gold is better. How can I describe it? It is tighter in the low end, just tighter and more controlled and better everywhere, more musical, slightly more defined everywhere, it doesn't lose any punchy-ness, it plays better with my pedals and improved them, distortion is more even, it chimes and rings like a bell on the cleans, it gets better with age as it breaks in, and on and on. I love playing with this speaker in my amp. I can't stop playing. I rush home from work to hear it. The reviews online are accurate and there is a reason there is so much praise for this speaker. You can spend months looking for a cheaper alnico that sounds this good or you can save time and spend the money for this one.

Last thing I would say is that like everything GAS, this speaker is great but not the be all end all. It's a good upgrade but not the ultimate solution for your amp. It won't turn a bad amp into a good one, but I love the difference it made in mine.
