OVERVIEW

Emulates the Celestion Alnico Blue but with higher power rating.

Many other manufacturers have tried to recreate the Celestion Blue sound in a higher powered driver, and some have come close. But only Celestion has the experience and know-how to emulate the tone and response of its own Alnico classic in a modern driver that's perfect for single or multiple applications in cabinets or combos.

The power handling of the Original Blue speaker was limited by the material used in the construction of the voice coil. After hundreds of hours of testing and countless prototypes, Celestion has developed a coil that can withstand higher levels of power but leaves the tone unaffected. Such a relatively simple, yet important, development lies at the heart of a truly remarkable new guitar loudspeaker.

Like a bell. A big bell that you need to hit harder to get a proportional amount of chime out of it. That's how I'd sum up the relationship of the Gold to its brother Blue. That being the first question on the tip of everyone's tongue, let's talk the speaker proper. This is the most expensive speaker I've ever used. It's also the best. There's a certain amount of harmonic content that means, with a good ear, you'll hear things you don't from a heavy magnet ceramic speaker. It's what most folk would call "pretty:" real sparkly touch-sensitive like nothing I've ever used. It has fairly early cone breakup, which tacks on a smooth compression that works with a driving power section to make some beautiful noise. Mind the fact that the magnet assembly is a good inch or so longer than most speakers. Might present a problem with some open-back combos, but if you gotta take a saw to your amp to get it in you'll be glad you did when you hear it. It's that good.

First the standard background info... I play rock covers in a gigging band. My gear is EVH Special guitar, Soldano SLO, and various closed back cabs. I have been playing guitar for over 20 years and 15 of those as a gigging guitarist.

I really like the Celestion Vintage 30 speaker, but it seemed to be missing something. So I read the reviews on this speaker and took the plunge thinking that you get what you pay for - right?

I was really looking forward to trying this speaker. I played it through three different closed back cabs (4x12 Mesa Rectifier, 2x12 Soldano, 1x12 Mesa Thiele. I was not impressed. In fact it didn't come close to comparing to the Vintage 30 speakers.

The Gold is supposed to sound like an Alnico Blue. I don't know if that is true because I have never played an Alnico Blue. If it does sound like a blue, I don't understand why there is so much hype for this speaker. The Alnico Gold isn't a bad speaker, but in my opinion, it has no character at all. I've heard terms such as "bell like", "chimmy", "creamy". The only one that fits is "creamy" (and not in a good way). The terms I would use are "compressed" and "fizzy". Maybe it sounds better in an open back cab, but it did not impress me in any of my closed back cabs (4x12, 2x12, 1x12).

Note to those with smaller combo cabs... I tried to install this in my Fender Blues Jr, but it didn't fit. The 'bowl' that covers the magnet sticks out farther then a regular speaker and I couldn't fit the electronics chassis back in place because the speaker was too big.

I would have given this speaker 3 stars if it was reasonably priced, but it's so over priced that I had to knock it down another star. Sorry Celestion.

Save your money and buy a Vintage 30. The Vintage 30 has rich overtones and harmonics, and doesn't sound fizzy like the Gold and most other speakers.

Comments about Celestion Gold 50W, 12" Alnico Guitar Speaker:

This a great sounding speaker. Be aware however that if you install this in a small combo amp the bell cover of the magnet can rattle or vibrate. I consulted some online articles wherein people removed the bell in order to fit the speaker in a small space. Celestion suggested that I return and replace the speaker but I felt there was nothing intrinsically wrong with it so I removed the bell in my Swart AST and it sounds great!

Comments about Celestion Gold 50W, 12" Alnico Guitar Speaker:

I bought this speaker due to great experience I had with previous purchase of Celestion Alnico Gold speaker. I was dismayed to find that after paying a premium price, I received a speaker that appeared "cheap" in construction. Instead of cork around the perimeter of the speaker, Celestion has went to using pressed paper. I haven't seen that used in over 40 years. What's up Celestion? The speaker does sound very nice I use it in a Fender 2-12 enclosure along with a Celestion G12H 75 watt Creamback. The sound has only improved with playing time. It would be nice if Celestion would pass the savings on if they are going to cheaper components.

Comments about Celestion Gold 50W, 12" Alnico Guitar Speaker:

I put this in a Vox open back cabinet alongside a Celestion G12-75H Creamback. Previously it had a Celestion 25 watt Greenback which also sounds nice but became blown under normal playing. I considered Alnico Blues as an upgrade but with only 15 watt rating I couldn't justify the expense. The Alnico Gold with 50 watt rating offered similar sound with less risky chance of blowing speakers. The combination through a Vox AC30HWH is warm, easy to get desirable breakup in overdrive, and has plenty of punch in the bass notes. The Greenback was similar but there is a noticeable improvement in the Alnico Gold, Wish it was less expensive, then they would be in my other cabinets!

Comments about Celestion Gold 50W, 12" Alnico Guitar Speaker:

I've considered alnicos for different amps, but generally I like a warmer sound so I've stuck with ceramics. That said, I just bought the new Fender Custom Deluxe Reverb (silverface, modified 68) for a small portable amp. I've owned a deluxe reverb reissue before, but this amp is different. To me it didn't sound anything like a deluxe reverb. And the stock Celestion V12 speaker was harsh when overdriven. This Celestion Gold really brought the amp to life. Well worth the money.

got this for my cab... The sound is much smoother as opposed to a rougher vintage 30 sound. It is quite heaver with a large alnico magnet on the back... so be sure to mount it well.

I have yet to hear a better speaker.
I installed one in my mark 5 boogie (90 watt amp), so far, after many small to midsized venues, I've never had to push it beyond its 50 watt rating. It is hard to justify the cost, but one should not underestimate the tonal improvement a high quality speaker can make. I want another.

I kind of wanted to keep it a secret, so that only I and a few other gold owners could sound this good.

Comments about Celestion Gold 50W, 12" Alnico Guitar Speaker:

I cut the back of my Marshall Mc212 cab in 2 parts so it had a top and bottom with a 8' gap in betreen so its now a semi open back. With the stock speakers it had a full, grainy rich tone but not as defined as I wanted it. I just installed 2 of the golds and I am impressed. I had to back the master volumn back a bit so its a loud speaker. Very sensitive so my pick dynamics are really coming out. With my Orange 30w head and a touch of OD, its got a wonderfully complex tone consisted of a grainy texture with definition and sparkle. My other cab is a Mesa with V30s. It weighs a ton, closed back and has more punch but the golds even not broken in will melt your face off. I play 80s rock,VH even some blues and imo this is the TONE alot of us have been chasing. Orange Dual Terror+open back+ Celestion Gold = TONE Heaven. Also hooked to a Mesa minirectifier = eargasm. By most accounts my Mc212 is a low end cab. If the Golds make this lightweight cab that I opened the back on sound like a million bucks, I can only imagine that they would make most any cab sound alot better. Bottom line if you like your current cab and its a keeper, throw down the xtra cash and get a speaker that hopefully will only sound better with time and be a longterm investment.
