Best 12string Set For My Slide Guitar Needs

By Ed Zincavage

from Seattle, WA

Comments about D'Addario EJ37 12-String Phosphor Bronze Acoustic Guitar Strings - Medium Top Heavy Bottom:

The D'Addario EJ37 Phosphor Bronze Acoustic Guitar String Set is the perfect gauge for my acoustic slide blues and folk guitar live performance and recording needs. I use them on my Alvarez AJ-60S 12 string guitar, as well as on my old Yamaha 12-string. These string gauges were hand-picked by guitarist Richard Gilewitz for D'Addario. I learned about them from Richard when he gave a workshop and performance at Moore Brothers Music, in Sammamish, WA. The medium top and heavy bottom allow for a much larger and stronger sound than the thinner, traditional strings. The result is that in standard tuning, one can tune the guitar down to the key of D, or C# and the result is a larger sound than lighter gauge 12 string sets provide.I prefer to use Open D tuning for my original compositions and slide work. This set of EJ37 strings allows me to use my slide without getting buzz, as well as being flexible enough to bend the strings when necessary. I've tried all kinds of other 12 string gauge sets on my 12 string guitars, and none work for me as well as EJ37. For my needs, this set of strings provide the perfect balance of tone, flexibility, strength, and longevity.

Comments about D'Addario EJ37 12-String Phosphor Bronze Acoustic Guitar Strings - Medium Top Heavy Bottom:

These strings are great for dropped tunings on a 12-string acoustic guitar. I have a set of these on a 1989 Seagull S12 and tune them C#-C#. Most string sets out there are "extra light" (.010-.047-inch) for 12-strings, but they flop around and buzz when tuning down.

Comments about D'Addario EJ37 12-String Phosphor Bronze Acoustic Guitar Strings - Medium Top Heavy Bottom:

I read about putting heavy gauge strings on a 12 string and then tuning it lower, I decided I wanted to use a d standard tuning. After about 20 seconds I had finger fatigue in a big way. These need to be to be tuned lower. Other than my fingers falling off I thought these strings sounded great. If I ever decide to tune lower I might come back to these.
