OVERVIEW

An acoustic guitars sound enhancement port with no electrical parts.

This Planet Waves O-Port is proven to enhance the sound of any acoustic guitar and kill feedback without the use of electronics. It's has been tested under the scrutiny of world-renowned acoustic engineers and sound producers to improve tonal quality. The result is a fuller, richer sound with noticeably increased sustain and harmonic range. The tonal enhancement provided by the Planet Waves O-Port is particularly pronounced when the acoustic guitar is plugged in and amplified, resulting in a much fuller sound, a stronger signal to the internal pickup, and significant feedback control. The Planet Waves O-Port fits in most acoustic guitars with a round soundhole, regardless of make or model.

The Planet Waves O-Port's material is custom blended for flexibility to prevent damage to your guitar finish and inlays. The O-Port suppresses feedback and gives your acoustic or acoustic-electric guitar a fuller sound with more volume, better clarity, and enhanced projection.

Just measure your acoustic guitar's soundhole and choose the Planet Waves O-Port that fits best.

I bought two O-ports, one small size for my classical guitar and one large size for my acoustic bass guitar. In both cases, the O-port helped a lot to deliver what many users have described as a more "focused" sound.Acoustic guitar players would be be able to feel that sometimes, certain combinations of notes would result in the sound waves crashing around inside the body like a stormy sea, giving the sound a "fragmented" feel.Having installed the O-port, I noticed that this crashing of sound waves has greatly reduced. I now hear the notes as they should sound. The O-port does not result in increase in volume, just that the unwanted sounds are suppressed, leaving the music to stand out much more. This may be why some users think that they got louder. It's like 2 people speaking at the same time, it'll be hard to hear their words. If one shuts up then the other person's speech will be clearly heard without needing to speak louder. I think that's the effect the O-port produces in my guitars. It's actually a subtractive device?Of particular mention, acoustic bass guitars usually cannot be heard above other acoustic instruments as its physical characteristics is such that it simply is unable to generate enough volume to compete with say guitars and banjos. After installing my O-port, my acoustic bass guitar can now be heard even when playing with 3 other guitars. It's not louder, just that the notes come out much clearer. Some users have pointed out that the O-port works well with low quality guitars but seem to do nothing in very nice ones. I think that is true because the nice guitars are well made and do not have much of the crashing sound waves anyway, hence the O-port has little to subtract there.

OK,let's me tell you how this works. The o-port reduces or eliminates some vibrations at certain frequency. As the result, (1) the volume becomes smaller significantly; (2) the bass becomes less boomy; (3) the clarity of the sound might be enhanced because some onvertones are gone, but I can't tell; (4) you can play harder to produce louder sound because the sound now is more "clear".

Now you know, it doesn't make the sound louder. It just makes it possible to play louder sound without noisy overtones. If you read the manual or description of the product carefully, you'll find that they never say it for sure that the volume will be enhanced by the o-port.

I installed and removed it. The hard plastic o-port caused paint around the soundhole peeled off a little. If you install and remove many times, you'll eventually see the permanent damage to the paint of your guitar. The o-port is not made of soft rubber. It's made of hard plastic.

Think twice before you buy. You'll spend more on the return shipping.

      Planet Waves O-Port Review

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves O - Port:

I play a Breedlove Atlas Series (jumbo body with maple back and sides) and I have always loved the sound of the guitar, but I have sometimes wished that I could lose some of the boomy bass. I bought the O-Port after seeing the display at a local music store. I installed it in my guitar and I am very impressed with the results. I see that a lot of other people have used words like "clarifies the sound" and "focuses the sound", and that is about right. With the O-Port installed, the sometimes intrusively boomy bass is tamed - especially plugged in. I also noticed that my acoustic volume seems to have increased, though some reviewers here have said they can't tell a difference in volume. My brother in law also has a Breedlove Atlas (dreadnaught with rosewood back and sides), and we play together when we get the chance. When I pulled out my guitar and hit two chords this weekend, he immediately noticed a difference in my volume and overall sound. I think that if you have a really nice guitar like an expensive Gibson, Martin, or Taylor you won't hear any difference in the sound. With the less expensive guitars, however, I am convinced that the O-Port makes a very noticeable improvement in the sound of an acoustic / acoustic-electric guitar. I think it's well worth the money, and I am going to pick one up for my Sigma-Martin that I've had since 1983 as well as my acoustic bass. Awesome Invention!!!
Not many features...it seems to hold its shape (round), and the lip that goes around the outside of the soundhole is sturdy.
I don't think I will see it destroyed in my lifetime unless the plastic gets brittle with age.
I think for what the O-Port did for my guitar it is an excellent value.

My review of the Planet Waves O-Port sound enhancer
I installed an O-Port enhancer in my Tacoma JR55 jumbo six-string guitar, and was so impressed with the sound improvement that I immediately ordered three more for all my other guitars: a Larrivee D03-R dreadnaught, Yamaha LL16-12 professional 12 string, and my Yamaha FG720S-12 12 string. If I had more guitars, I would install it on them also! Note that these instruments represent the high end of the guitar market down to the lower end and all were improved in tone. This device is remarkable in giving you improved sound at minimal cost, with the freedom to remove it if desired. At such a low price, this is a good way to enhance the sound of your instrument. Hint: For standard sized guitars, buy the large size, in black color. This darkness of the sound hole will go along with the black color, to minimize the appearance of this device.

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves O - Port:

It just simply works people. I know its hard to accept that a cheap piece of plastic can make your guitar sound better, but it scientifically makes sense and the results would agree. My guitar definitely projects better, especially when finger picking. i notice a difference in sustain, and the low end really comes out. it doesn't change the sound of your guitar, just enhances what's already there. i put it in my solid cedar top takamine, and ill never take it out. ill echo what other reviewers said about it makes the body vibrate more

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves O - Port:

I put the O-Port in a Martin LXM with all HPL construction, and I really think the guitar sounds similar to others that would have set me back at least $100 - $200 more. This may be a little strange to say, but the tone sounds somewhat compressed (which is a plus in my opinion).. it seems to add a mid-range spike and kind of tone down the boomy bass end. I would definitely recommend this as an upgrade option.
Well, it's round... The neck joint is pretty much flush with the sound hole on my guitar, so I did need to "modify" the O-Port by trimming a bit of material away just below the gap in the mounting rim. That entire process was extremely simple, and I don't think it should detract from my review since that was a factor of instrument construction and not a fault in the O-Port's design.
It's made of a fairly pliable plastic, so my primary concern during installation was potentially damaging it by bending it around too much. Similar to what I stated in the 'features' section, the material is extremely easy to work with as far as slight mods to help it fit better.
Honestly, for the price... I really don't think you can go wrong. It was a cheaper upgrade than the brass bridge pins I put in, and I think it had a bigger impact on the tone of the instrument.

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves O - Port:

I put this in my old Alvarez and noticed a definite change in sound. It was louder and the notes seemed to have more clarity. It enhanced the top end, which to me is not an improvement--I go for more of a throaty midrange sound in an acoustic guitar, so I wasn't really crazy about how the O-Port changed my overall sound. BUT if you're looking for more volume and clarity and top end, this is a steal. Installation was simple on my dread-size guitar, but be aware that if you have a smaller bodied guitar with electronics inside, the O-Port might not fit so well. In my other OM-sized guitar it was crammed up against the internal mic and the onboard preamp. Be sure you have enough clearance inside around the soundhole.

I bought two: one for my steel-string dreadnought ('98 Martin DR), the other for my nylon-string classical guitar ('67 Guild Mark II).

The difference it made on the Martin was marginal. The difference it made on the Guild was huge! So I think that maybe it works better on smaller bodied guitars.

        Hope this helps.

It is just not worth it

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves O - Port:

I was not a skeptical buyer; I was instead an overly excited buyer whose expectations may have been too high! Didn't fit my Yamaha Compass properly because of the electronics (not the O-Port's fault), however, I removed the preamp and got it installed. It failed to produce any meaningful enhancement once I got it in. I then moved it to an inexpensive dreadnought where it fit perfectly well. I was once again excited until I got it all tuned up and ready to play. I can definitely hear a boost in low frequencies coming out of the dreadnought but I did not find it to make the sound "richer" or fuller. Just really nothing here! Didn't get to try it plugged in to verify the anti-feedback properties. Installs very easily, it is made well and once smooshed to get it into the sound hole it pops back open with no creases or markes (nice plastic); it just absolutely fails to deliver on the sound enhancement. If it was one guitar, I would blame it on the guitar but after installing it in two different guitars and having the same result - it absolutely does NOT enhance the sound in any meaningful way - my opinion, of course. I could have spent the money on a second Hercules stand!

OK....I have had this on my steel string Cordoba Acero D11-CE for 6 months now and have definately notice better overall projection, louder bass, and more clarity.
This guitar uses an integrated neck joint (spanish neck construction), and as such, tends to be very light and resonant. ........but lacks projection because the back and sides seem to resonate more, which cancels out frequencies instead of REFLECTING them from inside the back....and out through the sound hole.
Upon putting fresh strings on yesterday, I thought I'd take the O Port out and try the guitar for awhile without it. I HATE IT. The projection, Clarity, and bass is gone.
I'm putting the O Port back in PRONTO.
Yep. This definately works in my instance!

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves O - Port:

Works great on guitars with low volume like mahogany. If you have a high quality spruce, cedar, or other high resonant tone wood that projects loudly, then it will actually subdue it. I tried it on 3 guitars- a Greg Bennett Samick mahogany, a Sky acoustic bass, and an Indiana S-Scout. Helped the Samick and Sky tremendously! These both had low acoustic volume. Also on the Sky bass, when it was amplified, it would feed back horribly- that problem is now nonexistent! So it does what it says. Now for the Indiana....it is the loudest acoustic guitar I've ever played and when I installed the O Port, it actually lowered the volume and the sound became muddy. So it all depends on the specific guitar- it helped the 2 that needed it.

I ordered the O-Port for my "Mini Maton" guitar for improved amplification performance, and feed back control. It arrived promtly, and It fit well (with a minor cut for adjustment) the MATON guitar has a large block inside where neck mounts to body. The O-Port cut easily with scissors to custom fit inside and it slid right in and fit well. I instantly noticed improved tonal response in the mids and highs. It also improved projection and volume. It seems to work well in feedback supression.Remember to measure the sound hole O-Port comes in 2 sizes which will fit everything. Overall I am very pleased with the O-Port and Musicians Friend.

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves O - Port:

I've installed this on my Washburn D26 (Solid Cedar Top with Laminated Koa Back and Sides) which has always been loud, but a bit boxy sounding. The installation was relatively simple and quick (A few minutes including loosening and retuning strings). It's a nice snug fit.

I could immediately tell that the sound had improved. Notes really are more defined, clear, and have better sustain. The general timber seems to have also warmed as the guitar is now a bit more bassy and balanced even though the high strings seem brighter, yet fuller, too. Interesting thing, and I don't know if this is good or bad, it is almost impossible to overdrive the sound. No matter how hard I strum (with a medium-hard pick) there is a "volume ceiling." Where before, hitting the volume ceiling meant putting out a very harsh sound, now even with hard strumming, the guitar sounds as if it has been tamed a bit. Picking individual notes also produces a clearer tone.

The only possible downside: I am a bit concerned about the material potentially damaging the finish and wood around the hole. As I will probably never remove the O-Port on this particular guitar, I'll never notice if any damage has occurred. It's also my beater, so who cares. I can't see myself installing one of these and taking the chance on my Taylor 815 or my Larrivee L9 - besides they don't need any help in the sound department anyway.

In addition, I can't tell if there has been any effect on the plugged-in sound. Feedback, tone, sustain, etc. seem the same.

Finally, my buddy put one on his Gibson Songwriter, but I don't think it's had similar effects. His guitar has definitely gotten quieter and is not the boomy and bassy guitar it once was. While the volume suppression has also taken place in his Gibson, it has done so much more significantly. Don't get me wrong, it still sounds great with the O-Port, but it has an entirely different personality. What was once a throaty guitar with strong attack, is now more of a crooner. He loves it. Me, not as much.

A previous review had mentioned something about the O-Port having more positive effects on lower end guitars and not so much with the higher end ones. Maybe this is what he was talking about?

I have used this device in 3 inexpensive guitars used for gigging.I find that it has added focus and projection to them and while possibly making them less boomy it definitely added focus and balance.

ok, first off I wanted a soundhole cover that not only improved sound live, but also controlled feedback. This device did neither. First, you have to loosen all your strings to place the unit in the soundhole and loosen all the strings to take it out. Second, the unit did change the sound some to be in my preference a little more midi, but overall it didn't change much. Third, the unit actually doesn't help with feedback. I played live with the unit the next day I got it, and I got massive feedback during practice. For sake of time I had to push the O-Port into the guitar and use the cheaper planet wave unit which worked wonders. Fourth, the unit depending on the guitar actually pushes against the electronics.(thats a cause of disaster.)
So for the money not worth it and doesn't do what you want.

There is a definite difference in the sound of my Seagull Maritime Mini-Jumbo (Spruce top /Mahogany sides & back). There is separation of notes, a clarity, especially when finger picking where I believe there is also a volume difference. Amazing how something so simple and inexpensive can make a difference. I will buy these for my other acoustics!

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves O - Port:

The only reason I am giving this 4 stars is because part of the advertising is inaccurate as far as changing the unapmlified sound. I know the O-port sounds like snake oil but I have one in my Martin dc-16 ogte. It didn't make any miraculous changes in sound, nut when plugged in it cut feedback like nobody's business. I reaaly appreciate this. It cut the feedback with out having to put one of those stupid black plugs over the soundhole. It's still a functional guitar whether your plugged in or not. It's a feedback plug you can leave in all the time without affecting sound and it's hardly noticable. It just shows a thin black or white, depending on the color you choose, line around the sound hole.

The Planet Waves O-Port delivers an unbelievably rich full tone in any application on any guitar I have tried it with. I use it in the studio and live and the level of control I have with head amps on the desk is fantastic, No more gaining the signal up too late in the chain. With this device the signal is strong, both acoustically and with direct injection. It is simple to use, aesthetically tasteful and built to a very high quality. Would love to make comparisons with other devices I have tried, but truthfully this is brand new technology and is way ahead of anything else. Its as simple as this, if you use an acoustic guitar, you gotta try one.

I installed this in a fairly cheap acoustic-elec. guitar just wondering if this would increase the performance of the instrument. Acousticly there was a definate difference but plugged into an amp and WOW!!!Loveit!!! Get one you'll be glad you did and, really not much dinero to spend on the improvement. Also very easy to install.

                        Planet Waves O - Port

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves O - Port:

I tried the O-Port in two different acoustic guitars, the first one was a Takamine EF340SC GN, which is a decent sounding guitar but could use more bass and fullness, which I hoped the O-Port might achieve, but upon installation of the unit I felt that if anything the sound was less full although possibly louder. My assesment in that installation was that it detracted from the tonal quaility of the instrument so I removed it from that guitar. The next installation was in a Taylor GS8 guitar which has a very nice full sound but I wanted to see if it would enhance the existing bass and also to see if the O-Port might function in a different application, and again I felt there was no discernable improvement and if anything it was possibly a detraction of the existing sound of the guitar. So in my opinion for my purposes it is useless.I see that some people have had satisfactory results but be wary that not everyone finds it to be worthwhile. The good news is it isn't a lot of money but if it ends up in a box of junk it is a little dissapointing.
