I own two acoustic guitars that I have experience with, using the D'Andrea tone pins. My guitars are: 1968 Martin D12-35 Brazilian w/ D-28 neck retro-fitted by Martin in Nazareth, PA
1994 Taylor 810CE Indian Rosewood w/original type neck

Prior to re-pinning these guitars, I have used the orginal plastic pins from the factory. Also, I've used a variety of strings on both: silk & steel, Phosphor & Bronze, and Bronze. On the Martin, I have a Shadow SH470 3-pickup assembly, and on the Taylor, the Fishman Prefix Onboard blender system.

I was looking primarily for increased clarity, esp. in the treble range, w/o sacrificing the bottom end. If you're looking for a sound that doesn't re-color your guitar's woodiness, you may want to stay with ebony, bone, or even Micarta versions. But I'm not a purist, so if you want to scream at me, knock yourself out. Originally, D'Andrea only offered the cylindrical-head design, so I had to get what I could get. More recently, they're offering the traditional-pin style tone pins, which I much prefer. With the cylindrical, I find the touch is maximum sustain, although somewhat more brassy. With the traditional, the combination is shifted more toward the ebony-woody with one side brassy. Note that the cylindrical style has you pulling your string through a hole in the pin head so that when you change strings, the string and pin stay threaded, while in the traditional, you have a separated string and pin combination.

I love the brass pins and wouldn't go back for anything. Sustain is heavenly, and the clarity unparalleled, in my opinion. You should expect a Roger McGuinn effect that gets pulled into your amp nicely, and a louder and clearer effect w/o amplification. For me, I think brass strings match better with the brass pins than the phosphor-bronze strings, but others may feel the reverse rings truer for them. If you don't try the brass pins, you'll never know if you like them, and they're so inexpensive, you haven't lost much of anything for the try-out. I heartily recommend them.

Im not gonna write a negative review about a product because it doesn't fit my guitar like a lot of people seem to do. I don't think thats a fair review because there is nothing inherently wrong with a product just because it doesn't fit. But when I received these, the quality control was so bad I was shocked. The mother of pearl inlay dots were set in without a thought as to quality at all. The pins did add a bit of brightness to the guitar which was nice but I can't give this product a good review because of how terrible the quality of the construction is. I switched them out for Jellyfish HotRod pins which worked much better. I would never recommend these. Use bone or if you want metal pins to brighten the tone then use a different brand. These are garbage.

Killing the Wolf

Comments about D'Andrea Tone Pins Brass Bridge Pin Set:

One of my acoustic guitars has a fine tone except for a few notes (G, G#, A on the third string) that are uniquely loud (wolf tone). A wolf tone appears when multiple resonances of a guitar (or any instrument) lie on top of one another or are very closely spaced. I bought the brass bridge pins hoping that their weight would lower the resonance of the guitar's bridge area enough to minimize the wolf tone. It worked very well. The guitar now sounds uniformly fine. In general, weighting the bridge does NOT improve guitar tone, but in this case it did.

Comments about D'Andrea Tone Pins Brass Bridge Pin Set:

I use these on an Ibanez AE 12 string. they improve the tone immensely! One small problem is getting the ball of the string end to pop up to the top of the bring pin hole. If you string it up loosely, you can put your hand through the sound hole and manually push the ball to the top of the pin. I take a luthier on tour with me and we both learned this little trick. Nothing like a bridge pin popping off stage at a concert. We carry spares, but it hasn't happened since we learned the trick. Hope this helps!

I have bought about six sets of these now. Just put them on my Martin D-1, they fit perfectly.

These pins dramatically enhance the high notes on some guitars. They are also a nice accent on guitars that have a plain appearance.

          Rock on.

Comments about D'Andrea Tone Pins Brass Bridge Pin Set:

Worked well, but the quality needs to be addressed! The insets were rough and set too deep. I repaired them by chucking them up in my drill and using some 2000 grit emery paper smoothed them out. Then using a buffing wheel and some Jewelers Rouge, I polished them! They are now beautiful! :) The only thing I don't quite understand is that 3 of them are Mother of Pearl and 3 are Abalone. Unique huh!

I have been playing the same Yamaha fg-180 since 1973. I play very close to the bridge to get a particular sound out of it. After putting these pins in using the same strings, I get the same sound further away toward the sound hole. they fit perfectly and a definate upgrade to my guitar.

These will not fit securely on some guitars, unless you bend the string down at a right angle, down at the ball, at the end of where it has been tied. Then it's no problem, and pins don't pop back out. I've had to do that on all my guitars. I love these, but very hard to clean. When mine get looking real bad, I just buy more. I usually keep them around 3 years, then buy new ones.

I ordered these tone pins for my alvarez baritone acoustic. The pins it came with were cheap and didn't offer much.if you're looking to add depth, resonance and clarity to your sounds these bridge pins are a no brainer! Excellent sound, excellent quality and least important (but still a nice extra) they even look fantastic too!
