I own two acoustic guitars that I have experience with, using the D'Andrea tone pins. My guitars are: 1968 Martin D12-35 Brazilian w/ D-28 neck retro-fitted by Martin in Nazareth, PA
1994 Taylor 810CE Indian Rosewood w/original type neck

Prior to re-pinning these guitars, I have used the orginal plastic pins from the factory. Also, I've used a variety of strings on both: silk & steel, Phosphor & Bronze, and Bronze. On the Martin, I have a Shadow SH470 3-pickup assembly, and on the Taylor, the Fishman Prefix Onboard blender system.

I was looking primarily for increased clarity, esp. in the treble range, w/o sacrificing the bottom end. If you're looking for a sound that doesn't re-color your guitar's woodiness, you may want to stay with ebony, bone, or even Micarta versions. But I'm not a purist, so if you want to scream at me, knock yourself out. Originally, D'Andrea only offered the cylindrical-head design, so I had to get what I could get. More recently, they're offering the traditional-pin style tone pins, which I much prefer. With the cylindrical, I find the touch is maximum sustain, although somewhat more brassy. With the traditional, the combination is shifted more toward the ebony-woody with one side brassy. Note that the cylindrical style has you pulling your string through a hole in the pin head so that when you change strings, the string and pin stay threaded, while in the traditional, you have a separated string and pin combination.

I love the brass pins and wouldn't go back for anything. Sustain is heavenly, and the clarity unparalleled, in my opinion. You should expect a Roger McGuinn effect that gets pulled into your amp nicely, and a louder and clearer effect w/o amplification. For me, I think brass strings match better with the brass pins than the phosphor-bronze strings, but others may feel the reverse rings truer for them. If you don't try the brass pins, you'll never know if you like them, and they're so inexpensive, you haven't lost much of anything for the try-out. I heartily recommend them.

Im not gonna write a negative review about a product because it doesn't fit my guitar like a lot of people seem to do. I don't think thats a fair review because there is nothing inherently wrong with a product just because it doesn't fit. But when I received these, the quality control was so bad I was shocked. The mother of pearl inlay dots were set in without a thought as to quality at all. The pins did add a bit of brightness to the guitar which was nice but I can't give this product a good review because of how terrible the quality of the construction is. I switched them out for Jellyfish HotRod pins which worked much better. I would never recommend these. Use bone or if you want metal pins to brighten the tone then use a different brand. These are garbage.

I've had these on a Gibson Songwriter since they started making Songwriters... This has been the secret to my sound for that long. The difference is like figure picking vs. a quarter strummer, for tone difference. I finger pick usually and get a crystal clear chime when using the brass pins vs the plastic. I love really bright highs. I can't amagine having a guitar without these things

      Just What I Needed

Comments about D'Andrea Tone Pins Brass Bridge Pin Set:

Recently, I decided to string my Dean Tradition S2 with medium gauge 80/20 strings. I prefer the sound to the lights the guitar was originally strung with, but my low-end sounded, well, "murky"- which I recently learned is characteristic of Dean.

Taking the negative reviews into account, I decided to try these bridge pins anyway.
I installed them carefully (thanks to all of the reviewers who posted hints and advice), but had no issues of my own and...

WOW! My low end brightened up noticeably, even to my self-taught ears. I was worried that the high end might take on a brassy tone, but instead they rang out like the sweetest bells.

My guitar is on the light-weight side, but adding the extra weight/mass of the solid brass pins also gave me a fuller overall sound- I can actually feel the difference through the guitar.

Aesthetically, the solid brass pins have an industrial look, which appeals to me as an interesting contrast to the inherently rustic look of an acoustic. The heads are LARGE, though.

I am a hobby player of just over 2 years. I'm very pleased with the results of such an inexpensive modification- the pins (and the heavier gauge strings) have given my modest guitar a sound that belongs on a way more expensive instrument.

Comments about D'Andrea Tone Pins Brass Bridge Pin Set:

These comments are addressed to only 12-string guitar users as an "advisory". These pins are great for an Acoustic or Electric guitar however; I would not attempt to use any of them on a 12-string guitar as THEY DO NOT WORK! The bridge string spacing will not handle their use. If they were "thinner" at their top-end and "nubbed" like most regular pins, they probably would work however; they are just too large sized (overall) to accommodate use. We even tried them on multiple 12's (Cimar, Fender & Taylor) with the same results. Great product no doubt for sound on the 6's but, just not engineered for use on the 12's. Sorry!

I was looking forward to trying the brass pins but they are too small for my acoustic guitar. Very disappointed but I guess it is not possible to make a "one size fits all".

Comments about D'Andrea Tone Pins Brass Bridge Pin Set:

I likeed the sound of my acoustic before, but couldn't stand the look of the plastic bridge pins, which were getting more and more chewed up as I changed the strings. So I bought these (the abalone) brass bridge pins. It did change the sound of my acoustic, and I like it better than before. It actualy gave me more mid-range, a warmer tone, and yet still kept the highs in a nice balance. And it did increase the sustain. Not to mention that now my acoustic's bridge is stylin'! A very inexpensive and nice upgrade!

This is the best thing since sliced cheese. I own 4 different Alvarezs and a Spring Creek guitar. They fit just great in them. When I got my first set of pins I said I would wait till I had to change out thestrings. Time came, but I just loosened the strings and put in the bridge pins. WOW WOW. If you do this you will really see what adifferance they make. Wait till your ready to change strings- then put in the pins. No new strings.

overall - I'd recommend to anyone
The quality seems to be very nice. The overall tone and sustain of my guitar is MUCH better than with my old pins. The overall sound seems to have zero string interference - 100% sound. Good bass notes and super bright highs. I use these pins with a bone nut and saddle and I couldn't ask for any better. I'm impressed.

Comments about D'Andrea Tone Pins Brass Bridge Pin Set:

These pins are too narrow to fit securely into my Gibson acoustic, which uses "traditional" bridge pins, rather than the wider "presentation" pins. Even so, I was able to tighten the strings and the pins remained in place long enough for me to see that my guitar looked much worse with these than with the white plastic pins which come standard. The mother of pearl was crooked in two of the pins, sticking out on one edge. Overall, the height of the mother of pearl was very uneven, and the quality of the pearlescence was only decent on two pins. If I were the manufacturer, I would not allow these to leave the factory looking like this.
