I have had one of these, the same one, for 21 years. I first bought this as a means of amplifying my acoustic through an amp for live playing. I have used it, with moderate success for recording; however, it is always better to mic a guitar for recording IMO.This thing has been well worth the price. It has been through a lot of gigging and abuse for 21 years and has never failed to perform. After all these years, being in and out of my guitars, the thing has gotten a little loose, but still works great. For the money, and for the purpose it was designed, this thing can't be beet.

I bought the Dean Markley pack that came with two sets of strings and the pickup. I was hoping to quit having to mic my guitar when playing and singing. I used the thing a couple of times, but had to turn the gain on my sound system almost all the way up to get a tiny sound from the guitar. I then read in the instructions sent with the pickup about how to establish a new "solderless" connection if needed. I followed the instructions, and now there is no signal at all. I have cut the cord and rescrewed the set screw several times and have gotten absolutely no sound out of the pickup. So I packed it up and put it in a box never to be used again. I am disappointed!

Comments about Dean Markley Pro Mag SC-1 Acoustic Guitar Pickup:

i am the type of musician that performs sitting on a chair with a mic in my face just playing and singing. i do not use effects, i never get up and walk around stage or any of that. this pickup was exactly what i was looking for it's great if you don't care about effects, and if it doesn't bother you that there's no volume control. it has a very clear, crisp sound. i love it.

Comments about Dean Markley Pro Mag SC-1 Acoustic Guitar Pickup:

This is the second promag I've purchased in 20 years. The original is just as dependable as the new one, and if I ever had need for a third, I'd get another one of these. What more can be said?

A totally disposable pickup

Comments about Dean Markley Pro Mag SC-1 Acoustic Guitar Pickup:

I have already had two of these, and while they do have a good overall sound, very crisp and clean. Unless you run them through a noise gate or some other supression system the buzz is very annoying. As far as features go, What features? No e.q. no volume control and no noise supression. Also the cable if you can call it that, is quite fragile. Both of the Markley's I've used with my 12 string have ended up with the wire breaking right where it goes into the housing, and once it breaks... You might as well throw it away because you have to saw the housing open to get into it. If you have the money to throw away, buy it, if not....

if you just want to amp up a cheap acoustic it's a good option, if you are concerned about tone then get a better option or use a mic.

I've had a couple of these over the years, the older ones sound better. They install easily and sound pretty good. The 1/4 plug used on these is awful. (I hope they have changed this) I bought a soundhole pickup from a new company owned by a former employee of DM and I can't believe the difference. Tone is much better and has more output than the promag.

Comments about Dean Markley Pro Mag SC-1 Acoustic Guitar Pickup:

I bought mine over a week ago but only finally got around to using it for the first time today . I hooked it up to my 2003 Fender DG-22S Acoustic and then plugged it straight into a Fender Princeton 65 R combo which I own . I don't see what the problem that some people are having with this item unless they're using inferior equipment or are just plain stupid . Mine works fine and sounds great . Adjust the EQ on your amp accordingly along with positioning the pup just right and I don't see why there should be any problems. I'm 57 years old and have been playing for over 45 years now and to me, this is just as good as the over priced Duncan Woody. I haven't heard any hum nor experienced any issues with it at all. The sound is clear and loud and is good enough for gigs IMO. This is a keeper ! I love it !

Comments about Dean Markley Pro Mag SC-1 Acoustic Guitar Pickup:

This was always my standard pickup, I've gone through three. Sounds okay if your levels aren't too high, though you will get feedback if you're not careful, as you will with any similar product. The first two served me well for 7 years (lost the first after about a year). You can't ask for more from an external pickup. Then the third just didn't hold up for more than a few months. Wiring problem. There's only so many times you can clip the end and re-set the plug before just throwing it away and installing a pickup under the bridge.

                Volume IS an issue

Comments about Dean Markley Pro Mag SC-1 Acoustic Guitar Pickup:

Like another reviewer, I also have had problems getting enough volume out of this pickup. I play with a worship band at my church and in order for them to hear me, they have to turn the gain up on my channel all the way to 10. I'm thinking I'll need to get an in-line power amp or just upgrade to a real acou/elec guitar. This pickup is ok for solo songs with just me and the guitar, though.

I was looking for a pickup to install in Carvin C350 without having to do any modifications, I put it in and plugged into my Fender Champ XD on the acoustic channel and was very pleased with the tone, highs and lows excellent natural sound of the guitar, I would recommend it to anyone looking for just play an occassional gig or parties.

I got this to play my Martin acoustic live, this thing is a joke. ALOT of hum, very little output and clunky to play with. Spend 20 bucks more and get a Fishman, or at least the humbucker, this thing was a waste of time and money

Comments about Dean Markley Pro Mag SC-1 Acoustic Guitar Pickup:

This is a good pickup. Very nice, mellow sound, but not very bright. If you don't have an EQ or a preamp, it can be tought to hear the high notes. Also pretty low output, so whenever you plug into a system, you're always going to have to turn up pretty high, and you sometimes get white noise. But, overall, very good on your budget, and good for laidback, fun eviroments.

i tried it out there and ran it through a kustom acoustic amplifier. it sounded great. im sure its not the best sound you can get but all i had to do was slide it under the strings and plug it in, i didnt have to drill anything into my guitar or anything. only a 3 for features because theres not a whole lot to it, just slide it and go. i wish there was volume control or something but ohwell. also, its a little bulky, but it is still manageable. very manageable in fact. i am completley satisfied and recomend it to everyone!!!

                Needs shielded cable

Comments about Dean Markley Pro Mag SC-1 Acoustic Guitar Pickup:

The pickup itself is top-notch, but I can't understand why they skimped on the quality of the cable. It's not shielded, and I live in an area with strange electrical interference, which is picked up immensely due to the unshielded cable.I would have been willing to modify the pickup to replace the cable, but the pickup contains poured poly which seals in the components, making modification impossible.Apart from the interference, the sound is good. For better or for worse, it makes my acoustic sound more like an electric. Certainly has a different tone than using a mic.

I have owned several acoustic guitar pickups in the past from soundhole ones to the stick on pizio type. All I can say is sound hole pick ups have come a long way since the last one I owned. This is a nice pick up for amplifying an accoustic. For the guy who said he cannot get any volume with it I do not know what his problem is I have not problems with mine. Good value for the money and nice that you can use it with any acoustic and not have to alter the guitar.

Comments about Dean Markley Pro Mag SC-1 Acoustic Guitar Pickup:

I picked one of these up on a whim about 5 or 6 years back for my 1970 Sigma DR12-7 and have used it off and on in a few differant guitars and setups. The tone coming from this pickup is more reminiscent of older hollow body guitars than a piezo equiped acoustic, but it definately does not give you a "jazz box" tone. I found that the highs stayed pretty jangly while the lows didn't mud down too badly. It isn't perfect, but for the price, it'll usually do. I've run this direct input, through effects, through through solid state amps and a Vox AC30. The best tones I've gotten out of this for recording are often direct input while for most gigs, I run it to my AC30. It's not a perfect pickup and definately should not be considered in lew of a guitar with an active piezo element, but it's worth the 50 bucks to turn your old guitar into a contender for the stage against your bandmates. PS. the buzzing/hissing is 60 cycle hum, something you'll get from 80% of single coil pickups out there, if you want to avoid that, get the upgraded models.
