I remember it like it was yesterday. I was just a little kid shopping for my very first aftermarket pickups to put in my Flying V, when I saw an ad for Dimarzio in the latest issue of Guitar World with the Dragonforce guys on it and the tagline "The best players play the best pickups." That's effective marketing, because I did research on the Dimarzio website and found the beloved X2N. I ordered a set, one for the bridge and neck, and installed them and still use them to this day. The response to pick attack is awesome, pinch harmonics come out great, the low end is nice and chunky, and if you bring this into the studio, you won't be disappointed. I think it's general consensus that if you want to play a variety of styles, not just metal, with this pickup, it's probably not the best choice. I would recommend an Evolution or Super Distortion if you want a good metal tone as well as versatility for other styles, but back to the X2N's, they rock! I put one in the neck too and I get beautiful clear warm tones just how I like it. A lot of people are complaining that it's not good for clean, but I've used them for clean playing on the middle position for years and never had any problems. My only complaint is that if you crank the gain on your amp, the tone gets a little muddy, but just back it off a bit and you'll be fine!

I play mostly metal, and this pickup is completely dead. I put it in a Fernandes Dragonfly Pro with sustainer, and I've tried it through Line6 (bother Spiders II, III, and Vetta 2s), a Marshall AVT150, Krankenstein stacks, Boogie stacks, and a 5150. This thing sucks. Sounds like garbage. Sure, the output is so high, but so are the magnets - you can't have them anywhere NEAR the strings or it just destroys sustain. So the net effect is only a slight increase in output. It's got a 10 for features because I happen to like rail magnets, and I like series-parallel wiring which I can wire because this has 4 conductor wiring. The parallel mode sounds really good for cleans, but lacks definition when distorted. I bought this because I really, really like the tone on the DiMarzio Evolution but wanted just a little more output. This is NOT the option.

Great pickup!

Comments about DiMarzio DP102 X2N Pickup:

Although I have since switched to other pickups as most amps these days are designed with enough gain that you DON'T have to hit the input that hard, this pickup is great if you feel the need to. Has great tone, does clean up if you split it, or combine it split with a single coil. Just be forwarned about its ouput, and be sure this is what you are looking for. If you want something that is more of a "do it all" pickup then look at the PAF Pro, or FRED as they both get a great distorted tone, but also clean up a little better.
This pickup is designed to overdrive tube amps. It is also designed for an all out assult output wise. You don't buy a pickup with this much output for it's clean tone so all of you who are complaining about this, read up BEFORE you buy it. I put one in the bridge of a Washburn MG70 (a while ago to be sure) to replace the microphonic/feedback prone factory pickup and my troubles were cured. Combined with a single coil like the number two position which combines the front coil of the X2N and the middle single coil, I got a FANTASTIC clean sound. If you are getting feedback from THIS pickup then you have your gain maxed out and are way too close to your amp. With this pickup, a preamp gain setting of 5-7 with the master volume set high will result in absolutely no feedback with a VERY crunchy/distorted tone. If you choose to have your gain maxed at loud volumes then invest in a noise gate as no pickup will ever NOT feedback in this setting. As far as noise is concerned, it could also be that you have a wiring issue wherever you are plugging in your amp! I NEVER experienced hum/feedback/noise issues with high gain at VERY high live volumes in a LIVE setting!

Dimarzio actually says in their literature that this pickup by itself through a clean amp will distort it, so READ THE LITERATURE BEFORE YOU BUY IT!!!!!
Never had any complaints with Dimarzio's quality
You get a great pickup that will sustain, not drop out when you bend notes thanks to the blade design, and does exactly what it Dimarzio says it does: Knocks the crap out of the front end of your amp to produce distorted tones.

Comments about DiMarzio DP102 X2N Pickup:

Bottom line, if you are looking for a pickup to provide the best metal tone on the planet, the x2n is it! I am very picky about my tone and did lots of research before buying this. I play an Ibanez Iceman through a Blue Voodoo 120 watt half stack and this pickup really adds to the setup. The bottom end is tight, the mids have a nice slice and the highs are bright but not glassy or harsh. I use only on board distortion and the x2n really excels when used with a tube amp. I have owned all the premier metal pickups (emg 81/85, sd invader, blackout) and the x2n destroys all of them with ease. I dont play many styles but if Youre lookin for a versatile sound for all types of metal, buy yourself an x2n and enjoy!

    Cheap EMG option

    By Jeff C

    from NY

Comments about DiMarzio DP102 X2N Pickup:

I play metal pretty-much exclusively. I've had a Washburn "Dimebag" Culprit for 6 years now, and was happy enough until I got my new ESP with an EMG-81 in the bridge. All of a sudden, the stock pups in the Culprit seemed very low-gain in comparison. I couldn't fit an EMG's battery without routing, so I opted for the X2n as the highest gain passive available. Pretty amazing. The gain on this sucker seems about the same as the EMG, and tone-wise even sounds like it. The two guitars now sound very similar. I don't really see the need for the battery and hassle of an active, when they make a passive with the same amount of gain. Just a word-up.

Comments about DiMarzio DP102 X2N Pickup:

I popped this thing into my epiphone flying v, wow. this is a mean little pickup. don't expect any kind of clean tones from it cause they won't be very clean at all. to give an example of how much gain this thing puts out I played a show with my school band playing some rock n roll and I ran my guitar in a chorus pedal and an overdrive and it was too much for the board to handle and was making the board clip from the gain. it isn't very diverse but what it does do it does really well, and I just use my neck pickup for cleans and any kind of smooth sounds I want to make.

I have one of these installed on my Jackson KVX10 king v guitar, the output is incredible... just as much as my EMG81 on my other guitar. What surprised me was its clean tone, unlike the EMG, it sounds crystal clear and very responsive. Buy one if you want to upgrade your guitar for a ultimate metal sound.

Comments about DiMarzio DP102 X2N Pickup:

The DiMarzio X-2N has been my favorite pickup for years. I am a metal head so the power this pickup has is just right for me. While I agree that this pickup is hot as hell, it offers many different distortion sounds as you increase the volume pot from 3-10. As far as the clean sound I have achieved awesome shimmering clean sounds by just barely turning up the volume pot on the bridge. And if you mix it with the neck pickup it can be very cool. I believe if you spend the time learning to tweak your volume and tone knobs you can get great sounds out of the DiMarzio X-2N. I use the X-2N in the bridge position.

All those idiot who bought this for clean, shut up, with my abominably high-headroom vintage SANO I can't get this thing to break up without pedals. And I must say, It's got a sound all it's own, very unique CHUNK even when clean.
It's a 4-con with very little noise when you stand a good 8-10 feet from your amp. (At a band rehearsal volume, practice volume it's dead silent)
It got wet and still works fine.
Great value, even at +$10 from the norm.

    Best Bridge Pickup Ever!

    By Mike Rotchburns

    from Tuscaloosa AL

Comments about DiMarzio DP102 X2N Pickup:

I replaced the original EMG active set in Schecter Hellraiser with a passive X2N/Tone Zone set and it just screams now. I hated having the sterile tone with actives and I'm so glad I made the passive switch. This pickup is extremely high gain and the harmonics just fly out of my guitar now. I highly recommend this to anyone playing Death Metal/Black Metal/Grindcore

I wanted a pickup with a lot of power. The X2N has it but I found I really don't care for the tone most of the time. After trying lots of amp and guitar settings (always playing through a tube amp) I found that I like how it handles very low tunings. I tuned the guitar with the X2N down to drop C. It works good. Its not my favorite but it does have some good traits. If you have one and don't care for it, try tuning really low. You may like it.

This thing is a beast. I've got a decent tube amp that just needed a bit more "push" to take it to a full metal tone. This did the trick. I've been using one for about 2 years and love it so much that I put them in my other guitars as well. Great product.

Comments about DiMarzio DP102 X2N Pickup:

I bought a Jackson Dk2M with the X2N installed in the bridge and after the new strings broke in I really got to hear and appreciate this awesome METAL MONSTER of a pup. When I received the guitar I changed the strings immediately and it picked up every single noise the strings made at first I thought the pup sucked but after about 6 days the noise went away(needed time for the strings to break in) and I was amazed, it really sounds great. Also if you stand 3-4 feet from your amp and your like this thing sounds bad you need to move back MORE because the pup will return the signal back to your amp and sound like junk she is very powerful and sensitive. This is a very good pup and I am happy with it! Buy it now and you will know what metal is.

              The BEST metal pickup

I purchased this pickup and installed it on my Jackson Kelly. It replaced a DiMarzio super distortion, and while I originally felt bad, this pickup has completely blown me away! I use it specifically for recording because the metal tone is incredibly powerful! If you are going to buy a pickup to play metal, this one outperforms all others.

Well, this pickup simply rocks. Extremely clear, yet powerful as hell, this pickup gives possibly the best distorted sound I know of.

This pickup has amazing tone. It handles distortion very well and has a surprisingly good clean sound as well. I've played a guitar with Duncan Detonators and this thing blows them out of the water. Great pinch harmonics (add a wah pedal and they become easier to produce than you ever thought possible). Worth every penny.
