Although I have since switched to other pickups as most amps these days are designed with enough gain that you DON'T have to hit the input that hard, this pickup is great if you feel the need to. Has great tone, does clean up if you split it, or combine it split with a single coil. Just be forwarned about its ouput, and be sure this is what you are looking for. If you want something that is more of a "do it all" pickup then look at the PAF Pro, or FRED as they both get a great distorted tone, but also clean up a little better.
This pickup is designed to overdrive tube amps. It is also designed for an all out assult output wise. You don't buy a pickup with this much output for it's clean tone so all of you who are complaining about this, read up BEFORE you buy it. I put one in the bridge of a Washburn MG70 (a while ago to be sure) to replace the microphonic/feedback prone factory pickup and my troubles were cured. Combined with a single coil like the number two position which combines the front coil of the X2N and the middle single coil, I got a FANTASTIC clean sound. If you are getting feedback from THIS pickup then you have your gain maxed out and are way too close to your amp. With this pickup, a preamp gain setting of 5-7 with the master volume set high will result in absolutely no feedback with a VERY crunchy/distorted tone. If you choose to have your gain maxed at loud volumes then invest in a noise gate as no pickup will ever NOT feedback in this setting. As far as noise is concerned, it could also be that you have a wiring issue wherever you are plugging in your amp! I NEVER experienced hum/feedback/noise issues with high gain at VERY high live volumes in a LIVE setting!

Dimarzio actually says in their literature that this pickup by itself through a clean amp will distort it, so READ THE LITERATURE BEFORE YOU BUY IT!!!!!
Never had any complaints with Dimarzio's quality
You get a great pickup that will sustain, not drop out when you bend notes thanks to the blade design, and does exactly what it Dimarzio says it does: Knocks the crap out of the front end of your amp to produce distorted tones.

i use it in my ibanez s470 and it's a totally nightmare. don't expect to get clean tones from it, you'll be dissapointed. when it comes to it's "famous" high gain, it gives you the most noisy, ear-bleeding noise ever. you cannot play your solos cleanly and the tone is crap. it's called humbucker but it's full of hum and it made me hate dimarzio's and i'm afraid to buy another pickup. thank you dimarzio, thank you x2n.!

Comments about DiMarzio DP102 X2N Pickup:

I remember it like it was yesterday. I was just a little kid shopping for my very first aftermarket pickups to put in my Flying V, when I saw an ad for Dimarzio in the latest issue of Guitar World with the Dragonforce guys on it and the tagline "The best players play the best pickups." That's effective marketing, because I did research on the Dimarzio website and found the beloved X2N. I ordered a set, one for the bridge and neck, and installed them and still use them to this day. The response to pick attack is awesome, pinch harmonics come out great, the low end is nice and chunky, and if you bring this into the studio, you won't be disappointed. I think it's general consensus that if you want to play a variety of styles, not just metal, with this pickup, it's probably not the best choice. I would recommend an Evolution or Super Distortion if you want a good metal tone as well as versatility for other styles, but back to the X2N's, they rock! I put one in the neck too and I get beautiful clear warm tones just how I like it. A lot of people are complaining that it's not good for clean, but I've used them for clean playing on the middle position for years and never had any problems. My only complaint is that if you crank the gain on your amp, the tone gets a little muddy, but just back it off a bit and you'll be fine!

Comments about DiMarzio DP102 X2N Pickup:

I bought a Jackson Dk2M with the X2N installed in the bridge and after the new strings broke in I really got to hear and appreciate this awesome METAL MONSTER of a pup. When I received the guitar I changed the strings immediately and it picked up every single noise the strings made at first I thought the pup sucked but after about 6 days the noise went away(needed time for the strings to break in) and I was amazed, it really sounds great. Also if you stand 3-4 feet from your amp and your like this thing sounds bad you need to move back MORE because the pup will return the signal back to your amp and sound like junk she is very powerful and sensitive. This is a very good pup and I am happy with it! Buy it now and you will know what metal is.

Comments about DiMarzio DP102 X2N Pickup:

All those idiot who bought this for clean, shut up, with my abominably high-headroom vintage SANO I can't get this thing to break up without pedals. And I must say, It's got a sound all it's own, very unique CHUNK even when clean.
It's a 4-con with very little noise when you stand a good 8-10 feet from your amp. (At a band rehearsal volume, practice volume it's dead silent)
It got wet and still works fine.
Great value, even at +$10 from the norm.

Comments about DiMarzio DP102 X2N Pickup:

I popped this thing into my epiphone flying v, wow. this is a mean little pickup. don't expect any kind of clean tones from it cause they won't be very clean at all. to give an example of how much gain this thing puts out I played a show with my school band playing some rock n roll and I ran my guitar in a chorus pedal and an overdrive and it was too much for the board to handle and was making the board clip from the gain. it isn't very diverse but what it does do it does really well, and I just use my neck pickup for cleans and any kind of smooth sounds I want to make.

Comments about DiMarzio DP102 X2N Pickup:

I bought things in hopes to get away from the EMG 81. I put two X2ns in an Ibanez RGA72. They sound good but didnt have as much gain to them like i was hoping but was louder than other pickups. like I said i put two of them in the RGA. The clean on the bridge was a bit much but o n the neck sounded very full. With certain settings=, then neck got a little muddy on overdriven amps. Dont get me wrong they sound good but compared to the D activators they are lacking. Its funny the website says the X2n has the output of 510 and the d activators have an output of 475, but the Dactivators sound a little louder and has more gain. D Activators>X2n.....D Activators= EMG81??? Maybe

        Metal only!

        By Thundercrafter

        from Georgia

Comments about DiMarzio DP102 X2N Pickup:

This pickup is strictly for high gain applications, no doubt about it. You can't really get a good clean tone. But I've never had a problem with any hum or poor tone or quality from a DiMarzio pickup. 90% of the time any problems like that are due to poor installation . Anyway, Michael Romeo from Symphony X used to use these and I figured, heck, why not try one out? These things have a rather tight bottom end. I'll definitely have to try this out in a 7 string.
