OVERVIEW

Super-hot spice that won't get lost in the sauce.

The DiMarzio PAF Pro was created when chops-intensive playing was reaching high popularity, and high-gain amps and rack systems were the norm. A pickup was needed that combined a lot of presence and "cut" with an open-sounding PAF vibe. The transparency of its sound lets the PAF Pro slice through heavy processing, where darker-sounding pickups get lost in the mud of the effects chain. Low notes have both snap and chunk, and there is a spike in the midrange that gives the pickup a subtle "aw" vowel sound, like a wah-wah pedal stopped in the middle. Treble response is tweaked, so high notes stand out without getting brittle. The PAF Pro makes an outstanding neck pickup in almost any guitar, and it's an exceptional bridge pickup when high output isn't required.

The PAF Pro is a dependable choice right across the board -- neck and bridge positions, solidbody, semi-hollow and hollowbody guitars are equally effective uses.

This is a great building block pickup, because it's effective in many different situations. Try it in the neck position with a hotter bridge pickup - anything from a Norton to a Super Distortion will create a calibrated two-humbucker match. As a bridge pickup, it's really effective with single-coils, because it won't drown them out with too much power, and it's bright enough to blend in tone-wise.

I put one in the bridge of my rg 550 and the guitar is now oozin tone.I have a classic 550 with a maple fretboard. The tone I get is very paul gilbert like.It just has the right amount of everything to sum things up tonewise.Sustain is not that much improved from the old V2 humbucker, but there is a difference in sustain not by much though. In coil split this puppy sounds good as well, it can get very twangy in combination with the middle pup.For solos this thing just cuts through like a knife, but be careful though. It gives away your mistakes pretty easy.Easy on those bends XDIm just havin a blast with this humbucker I wanted something that would retain my original 'acoustic' guitar tone without adding too much and this pup just did that. These pups rely heavily on the players techniqueif you play good than you will sound great with these.

After researching and reading really good comments about this pup, I decided to give it a try and found that it sounds clean and glassy but very little sustain and poor harmonics, compared to the AirNorton that I installed in one of my guitars. The Norton has a fat sound, warm tones and it doesn't get muddy at all, very responsive for soloing with heavy distortion and superb for cleans, very versatile, you can play blues, jazz, ska, hard rock, classic rock, etc. To me the Air norton is phenomenal and a must have... PAF PRO sounds good but not as good as I expected.

Comments about DiMarzio DP151 PAF Pro Pickup:

My Ibanez now sounds like a guitar in the 900-1000 dollar range. Fred in bridg and Paf in the neck. These pickups are so versatile and full of life. I'd suggest them to anyone and everyone.
Excellent pickup for neck position. Clarity and thickness are superb. Very happy.
It's Dimarzio, nuff said.

PAF Pro

By Nikolas Silea

from Ohio

Comments about DiMarzio DP151 PAF Pro Pickup:

I'm buying this because I have the same thing in another guitar and I was looking for the same tone in my backup. It did exactly what I wanted it to. It's only an 8 because it's awefuly expensive. I know that DiMarzio and SD (and others) put a lot of effort into development and have extensive product lines but there are 16 solid body guitar models for less than $150 on this site right now and a ton more under $200. There is no way that component costs, like pickups, can be nearly as high as we are charged. For example the Charvel Desolation Double Cutaway is listed at $599 with EMG 81/85s. Those pickups are $200 for the set. Is it possible that the pickups represent 1/3 the overall cost of the guitar? They are more likely less than a hundred and maybe as low as $50 to the manufacturer. I know that I have to pay more than someone buying bulk but 10%, 20% or even 50% more seems to be much cheaper than we have to pay at retail. I don't begrudge anyone there livelyhood but I don't think that I will be dropping this kind of coin on pickups anymore.
Has 5 wires so that you can coil-split. It comes with mounting screws and springs but does not come with trim rings.
I've never had a quality issue with a DiMario pickup and this continues the trend.
As one of their older models, this one isn't as expensive as some of their offerings but it is about double the cost of something from GFS, for example.

Comments about DiMarzio DP151 PAF Pro Pickup:

Fist-If your not into leads this pickups isn't for you. I use this pickup in the bridge of a Ibanez Rg with a 5150 II and just absolutely love it. I have been playing on EMG's for years and now using this Paf Pro is just delightful. Its very clean~ I can play a C chord with lost of distortion and still hear it, not just wall of mud. Plus its not a noisy pickup so if your doing breakdowns and stuff you can pull off your noise gate and it sounds better. I use a Paf Joe in the neck in combination with this and luvin it. Lastly you cant hide much with this pickups so beware emg users.

Comments about DiMarzio DP151 PAF Pro Pickup:

I got this pup installed in the neck of my warlock and it is truly remarkable. The amount of styles you can play with this pickup is outstanding, thrash, funk, jazz, rockabilly, etc can be played with a quick tweek on the eq and the tone is heart breaking. I got an X2N in the bridge and that gives me all the versatility I need to play any style of music that comes to mind. Highly recommended.

Comments about DiMarzio DP151 PAF Pro Pickup:

This pickup is a rad bad-ass mofo pickup, in the bridge...I mainly play blues, punk and metal and it does all those and some with finesse...For metal it has alot of balls and sounds very meaty yet, yet cuts above the bass on the higher strings...worth the ammount I paid for it...I got it installed in a cheap Epiphone Les Paul Junior with Grover Tuners, which I added to it, and it's the best thing I've played...High Five to Larry Dimarzio...

great neck pickup, ok for the bridge

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

Comments about DiMarzio DP151 PAF Pro Pickup:

this pickup sounds good as a bridge pickup for classic rock, or pop stuff. it sounds very classy, can make an ibanez sound as classy as a gibson or PRS. for hard rock, it sounds good but it's kind of weak. i wish the pickup had higher output for the bridge position coz it sounds too wimpy for heavier rock. for the neck position it sounds exactly like joe satriani. very loud neck pickup with lots of punch yet retains the awesome clarity in the treble frequencies.

Perfect pickup for me

Comments about DiMarzio DP151 PAF Pro Pickup:

I have an Ibanez RG570 from like '88 or '89, with a Bill Lawrence L500XL in the bridge and a Ibanez IBZ bridge model in the neck for years and loved the sound for distortion and harmonics but not so much when playing clean. I wanted to try PAF Pro's for a long time but was worried they wouldn't be hot enough and I was so wrong. I just bought a pair of F-spaced DiMarzio PAF Pro's to put in the RG570 in the neck and bridge and they were exactly what I've been looking for. The distortion and harmonics are still there, in fact harmonics are a lot easier to get now plus they actually sound better, my tone is a lot better and the PAF Pro's really respond to hard or soft picking which is what I wanted but couldn't get before. I can't get over how great they sound clean, I can play so many more styles of music on the same guitar now. I really love the tone they have although I don't hear the "aw" sound they're described as having. I couldn't be happier with them and I'm playing with old strings, can't wait to hear them with new strings. I plan on getting more to put in my other guitars when I can afford it. I love these pickups and recommend that people at least try them, I think they'll be suprised since they are known for being low powered pickups compared to distortion class pickups. I should mention I only play at home with small portable amps like a Roland Cube 30, Micro Cube, Vox DA5 and a Toneworks Pandora PX4 w/headphones so I don't know how they would sound live on stage with bigger amps, but I'm totally happy, finally.

Reviving the RG

By RG350DXBK

from Nebraska

See all my reviews

Comments about DiMarzio DP151 PAF Pro Pickup:

I used this pickup in a custom mid position in an RG setup for a while and did not like a thing about it... but after deciding to revive my 10 year old RG350DX I placed it in the neck position for money reasons at first... then an HS-2 in the middle followed by a Breed Bridge. This teamed up with interesting wiring (Fender TBX tone pot and weak dual wiring for the middle) creates some of the most versatile sounds ever, but I would recomend that not too much hi-gain distortion layed on this pickup, it's beefy and punchy but muddy at hi volumes when it's pushed to hard. Keep it for real nice bassy breakdowns and it will save a riff or even show from chaos!

Better than the JB

Comments about DiMarzio DP151 PAF Pro Pickup:

I have a JB in my JS30RR and the Paf Pro in my Charvel. They are not the same guitar so that may be part of the reason that I like my Paf Pro better. The Paf Pro is super smooth and the harmonics are beautiful. The JB is a little harsh. I want my pick up to be a very true uncolored sound and use my amp for distortion and bite. The Paf just sounds better than my JB.

Comments about DiMarzio DP151 PAF Pro Pickup:

Well I have this Hondo Deluxe LP. It looks amazing. It's got everything the higher end Gibsons have, binding, set-neck, trapezoid inlays and a very nice flame top. The guitar also sounded great in the neck position, but in the bridge it lacked a great deal. So I decided to have the PAF Pro installed and now my pickups are perfect. Let me explain. My neck pickup was truly amazing. I couldn't have asked for a better sound and then the PAF Pro by Dimarzio exceeded everything I had imagined. This pickup can be rolled down with only a slight amount of distortion being diminished. If you want a pickup that is going to sound great then buy this one.

Comments about DiMarzio DP151 PAF Pro Pickup:

I agree with many that say its a great neck pick up. I bought the bridge version F-space and installed it on my warmoth maple neck maple fretboard, alder strat body in bridge position, definetly NOT disappointed! great warm tone and very good clarity, awesome chunk on the low end when needed and warm solo notes. My pedals are simple, Boss TU-3,Boss OD-3 and Boss DD-20.
My amp is Roland JC-120 loaded with Texas Heats. I gig almost every weekend and this guitar with PAF Pro and two Dimarzio area 58 neck/middle is becoming my go to guitar. Highly recommend it in the bridge if your looking for a versatile pick up which can pump out vintage modern vibe.

Comments about DiMarzio DP151 PAF Pro Pickup:

Well, I figured I would give these pickups a shot for neck and bridge, since I didn't think the output would be a big problem. It was, the neck tends to get a bit muddy on dirty, and in the bridge, it has no were near enough power. They sound good, but I would recommend something with more output, so you can get a bit more headroom with gain and sound.

Wow! I mean, this is beyond beliefe. This pickup is the end-all, be-all, perfect definition of vintage sound. It works perfectly in both bridge and Neck positions and it's balanced tonal spectrum allows it to meld well with almost any pickup from Piezo to high gain Humbuckers. I put mine in the bridge position with a Breed neck model and even found ways to meld it well with acoustic pickups Like the Reference Acoustic. The aplications for this pickup are endless. I suggest that you buy one and try it ouy for yourself.

This is a great all-around pickup that will serve very, very well in any position on your guitar, be it rhythm or lead. It has a bit less midrange and output than a Super Distortion, but it cleans up well when turned down and cooks on 10. It works particularly well with hi-gain amps played loud where you need to control feedback. Dimarzio makes the finest professional replacement pickups on the planet, and I won't use anything else.

Comments about DiMarzio DP151 PAF Pro Pickup:

I recently replaced the stock Fender pickups of my American Strat HH with the DiMarzio PAF Pro in the neck and the Super Distortion in the bridge. It immediately became my favorite guitar. The PAF Pro gives such smooth sweet tone for blues and rock, just perfect. Matched with the Super Distortion in the bridge has given me all the versatility I need, such a wide variety of tones, especially with coil tapping. Perfect for everything from blues to rock to metal. Don't settle for second best, load up your guitar with DiMarzio tone.
