If you think of the Super Distortion as 'meat and potatoes' pickup for rock and metal, think of the Super 3 as filet mignon. The Super 3 is sharper, has a more aggressive attack, and can be very dark because the treble is pulled back while mids are enhanced. It takes the classic Super Distortion sound and tweaks it considerably so that a familiar sound is totally new and different--to the point where it is not just a matter of changing the equalization.
The Super 3 is quick to respond to tappping, chugging, and is so clear that leads cut through the mix and sustain for a considerable period of time. Be warned--it is harder to hide mistakes behind this pickup, as it is much clearer than the wall of sound from a normal Super Disortion pickup--for any of you that have tried an Evolition pickup, it is a cross between the Super Distortion and an Evolution.
Try the Super 3 if you play rock and metal where true 'tone' is required, not just power. This is a player's pickup-one for people who are concerned about experiencing a classic metal tone-not just blasting the back wall out with heavy chords. Low notes are clear and dark, but the power here is in the mids which really allow a purcussive tone to shine through. As expected, the clean sound is not a sweet as other pickups available-so you may want to have a clean neck pickup to provide balance.
Recording is phenomenal as the Super 3 stands out on the track and live playing allows you to be distinct in the mix (not just blending in with the rest of the band).
I have been playing live for many years and experimented with various pickup settings. I always go back to the Super 3 when classic metal sound is required.

This pickup sounds decent, but dont expect a mind blowing difference. It has a boosted midrange and a very low treble (look at dimarzios website for the actual EQ) If you play newer style metal or progressive rock this may not be for you. The description says its for people who play with their mids scooped out, and thats what you have to do to get anything but mud or distorted bass sounds out of this pickup. I will admit it doesnt have that high shrill ice pick sound, but it doesnt hit you in the chest like i had hoped. I have tried this pickup in 2 different guitars, One mahogany, one basswood. Sounded bad in the mahogany since its natuarlly warm sounding,it turned it to mud, but the basswood was a bright sounding guitar, this was a better fit. If your thinking about getting this pickup, look elsewhere, your tone wont get much better with it, probably stay the same. If you have a really bright sounding guitar, I can see this helping.

Comments about DiMarzio DP152 Super 3 Guitar Pickup:
I dropped this PU into the bridge position of my Steve Morse Music Man SM-Y2D (incidentally just an excellent guitar, VERY versatile, thanks Ernie and Steve!
The original bridge PU sounded great (a DiMarzio as well) however I had read an article, and, the specs on this Super 3. I decided to pull the trigger on it, and once installed couldn't believe the sound! A lot of articles even DiMarzio's write-up had said it's best used with scooped mids. I don't agree, I can get great tone with mine set as always. GREAT sustain, crunch when hit harder and clean distortion, even with the PU volume cranked. Very beefy and quiet playing it clean as well. I'm going to install a coil splitter soon as the Morse has a nice PU set-up and switching system. I'd easily give this Super 3 the highest rating, and recommend it for any style... Great stuff!!

Comments about DiMarzio DP152 Super 3 Guitar Pickup:
Overall I love this pick-up! I like this pick-up so much that I have it in two of my other guitars. Full rich sound, no feedback and plenty of definition on the pick attack. I have one in my Gibson Les Paul BFG (go ahead and hate on that guitar, but she does me right) another in my Epiphone Gothic Explorer and another in one of my Ibanez guitars. It sounds good in all three and I couldn't be happier.
It's a pick-up - you can wire it however you like but you're not buying this for the options.
Solid build, plenty of wire to get the job done
the pick-up delivers as promised - hot crunchy sound with no flab. If you know the sound that you want, Dimarzio has a pick-up for you
Comments about DiMarzio DP152 Super 3 Guitar Pickup:
I built a guitar this last fall and wanted to go with Dimarzio's. It has a HSS configuration so I needed pickups that would compliment each other and I play mostly metal so I wanted something really hot and heavy. So after plenty of research I decided to give this a chance. I was worried with it being so hot if the other pickups would stand up next to it and compliment each other and I did alright. My middle is a Paul GIlbert injector which I absolutely love and it sounds great switching from the SD3 to the injector and vice versa. they go together great.
SD3...I am very impressed with this pickup. It's HOT, it's heavy but not muddy like some other brands that have comparable pups. This is Dimarzio's best at Metal tone I believe. I really love this pup, it brings a lot more edge to my playing, the harmonics are great, the tone is great..even on a clean setting it's bright and sounds great.
If you play metal and tuned down or standard this pup is perfect and it doesn't require batteries...
Love this pickup that's all I can say...Absolute love...
Again...I've never loved a pickup, till now.
Great price for such a Hot Pup
Comments about DiMarzio DP152 Super 3 Guitar Pickup:
Incredible tone at your fingertips! I play late 1980's Fender HM Strats and the stock pick up on those is this pickup. Recently I put together two customs like the old HMs and through some research I found that this was the pickup and it sounds as good in my builds as the Fenders. Flip the switch and lower the volume knob and there is the pristine clean. Playing through a 91 5150 head without a ton of preamp gain and this pickup in the bridge will get the classic tone of the 60s, 70s, and 80s.
Comments about DiMarzio DP152 Super 3 Guitar Pickup:
I use this unit in the bridge position on my Kramer. It's a great pickup for hard rock/metal, but with the coil tapping feature, you can roll your volume back a bit and get some pretty good clean tones as well. As with any Dimarzio p/u (or SD for that matter), you know you're geting a quality component in terms of construction, it's just a matter of taste on how the p/u is voiced. The Super3 is definitely voiced for the hard and heavy stuff, so if that's your thing, you'll probably like this model.
Comments about DiMarzio DP152 Super 3 Guitar Pickup:
I bought this pickup to use in a guitar a have always tuned in drop D for a more metal sound. I wanted a pickup that could hit all the squealing harmonics I could think of but wasnt just overloaded with distortion. This pickup covers a wide range of sound. It brings an amazing but clear distortion but also sounds amazing on clean channels. If your looking for a metal pickup that can do it all, The Super 3 is for you.
Comments about DiMarzio DP152 Super 3 Guitar Pickup:
I just recently replaced all my bridge pick ups with the Super 3. Finally a pick up that has it all. Clear, Fantastic Response, Awesome Harmonics, Great Tone and the list goes on. A pick up for the ages!
Comments about DiMarzio DP152 Super 3 Guitar Pickup:
I play in a punk Metal Band Pinche Gringos, My tone has never sounded better, This pickup offers a wide variety of options, a nice boost of midrange to bring out the punch and screams for solos. The Super 3 is the ultimate weapon for Metal,I would reccomend this pickup for anyone looking for that extra kick when you wanna be heard. I scrap just about every stock pickup, I have found that Dimarzio is Superior over any pickups I hav tried before and believe I have tried many different brands and I am totally satified with this product :)
