You know what I think? Who cares what I think! Here's what I know!... after years of playing and endless tone-freak obsessive research the Seymour Duncan SH-5 Custom is the greatest humbucker ever for ANY guitar with a mahogany body and neck. Things like nickel or stainless steel frets, ebony or rosewood fretboard and bolt-on or set neck construction will influence tone to a small extent, but as long as the guitar is mahogany body and neck it's gonna rock hard!.... and as for the Super 3......it's the just as evil twin brother Custom born for alder body, maple neck shred sticks!

I love the SH-5 Custom...... it's in every mahogany guitar I own, but it sounds like complete dog shat in a bright guitar. It's the best rock pickup because it's perfectly balanced inside a mahogany guitar. You see kids, when you throw in a slightly scooped pickup into mahogany, a warm sounding wood known for it's increased mid-range you have the balance that everyone has been searching for all along. But if you have a bright guitar the Super 3 will make it sound exactly like an axe with SH-5 Custom/Mahogany combo!

This pickup sounds decent, but dont expect a mind blowing difference. It has a boosted midrange and a very low treble (look at dimarzios website for the actual EQ) If you play newer style metal or progressive rock this may not be for you. The description says its for people who play with their mids scooped out, and thats what you have to do to get anything but mud or distorted bass sounds out of this pickup. I will admit it doesnt have that high shrill ice pick sound, but it doesnt hit you in the chest like i had hoped. I have tried this pickup in 2 different guitars, One mahogany, one basswood. Sounded bad in the mahogany since its natuarlly warm sounding,it turned it to mud, but the basswood was a bright sounding guitar, this was a better fit. If your thinking about getting this pickup, look elsewhere, your tone wont get much better with it, probably stay the same. If you have a really bright sounding guitar, I can see this helping.

Comments about DiMarzio DP152 Super 3 Guitar Pickup:

If you think of the Super Distortion as 'meat and potatoes' pickup for rock and metal, think of the Super 3 as filet mignon. The Super 3 is sharper, has a more aggressive attack, and can be very dark because the treble is pulled back while mids are enhanced. It takes the classic Super Distortion sound and tweaks it considerably so that a familiar sound is totally new and different--to the point where it is not just a matter of changing the equalization.

The Super 3 is quick to respond to tappping, chugging, and is so clear that leads cut through the mix and sustain for a considerable period of time. Be warned--it is harder to hide mistakes behind this pickup, as it is much clearer than the wall of sound from a normal Super Disortion pickup--for any of you that have tried an Evolition pickup, it is a cross between the Super Distortion and an Evolution.

Try the Super 3 if you play rock and metal where true 'tone' is required, not just power. This is a player's pickup-one for people who are concerned about experiencing a classic metal tone-not just blasting the back wall out with heavy chords. Low notes are clear and dark, but the power here is in the mids which really allow a purcussive tone to shine through. As expected, the clean sound is not a sweet as other pickups available-so you may want to have a clean neck pickup to provide balance.

Recording is phenomenal as the Super 3 stands out on the track and live playing allows you to be distinct in the mix (not just blending in with the rest of the band).

I have been playing live for many years and experimented with various pickup settings. I always go back to the Super 3 when classic metal sound is required.

Comments about DiMarzio DP152 Super 3 Guitar Pickup:

Incredible tone at your fingertips! I play late 1980's Fender HM Strats and the stock pick up on those is this pickup. Recently I put together two customs like the old HMs and through some research I found that this was the pickup and it sounds as good in my builds as the Fenders. Flip the switch and lower the volume knob and there is the pristine clean. Playing through a 91 5150 head without a ton of preamp gain and this pickup in the bridge will get the classic tone of the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

Comments about DiMarzio DP152 Super 3 Guitar Pickup:

I dropped this PU into the bridge position of my Steve Morse Music Man SM-Y2D (incidentally just an excellent guitar, VERY versatile, thanks Ernie and Steve!
The original bridge PU sounded great (a DiMarzio as well) however I had read an article, and, the specs on this Super 3. I decided to pull the trigger on it, and once installed couldn't believe the sound! A lot of articles even DiMarzio's write-up had said it's best used with scooped mids. I don't agree, I can get great tone with mine set as always. GREAT sustain, crunch when hit harder and clean distortion, even with the PU volume cranked. Very beefy and quiet playing it clean as well. I'm going to install a coil splitter soon as the Morse has a nice PU set-up and switching system. I'd easily give this Super 3 the highest rating, and recommend it for any style... Great stuff!!

Comments about DiMarzio DP152 Super 3 Guitar Pickup:

Overall I love this pick-up! I like this pick-up so much that I have it in two of my other guitars. Full rich sound, no feedback and plenty of definition on the pick attack. I have one in my Gibson Les Paul BFG (go ahead and hate on that guitar, but she does me right) another in my Epiphone Gothic Explorer and another in one of my Ibanez guitars. It sounds good in all three and I couldn't be happier.
It's a pick-up - you can wire it however you like but you're not buying this for the options.
Solid build, plenty of wire to get the job done
the pick-up delivers as promised - hot crunchy sound with no flab. If you know the sound that you want, Dimarzio has a pick-up for you

Comments about DiMarzio DP152 Super 3 Guitar Pickup:

This pickup is just right for a particular kind of guitar. I play a hardtail, basswood/maple/rosewood, single humbucker Strat. The Super 3 is described lots of places as dark sounding, but I have found that it isn't muddy at all--I just have my tone knob at about 6 or 7 now instead of 3 like it was when I had the DiMarzio Steve Morse in there. This pickup is not what you would call shimmery, but it is clear and focused and the harmonics are there if you want them--just open that tone pot. The mids are particularly nice, and they combine with the high output to hit the front end of your amp hard. I actually don't use much gain and let the pickup-front end interaction give me my breakup. That recipe puts my tone in the touch-sensitive zone that calls to mind names like Santana, Robben Ford, and Dumble. The lows are certainly there, but they are not overbearing. They just give the sound some extra weight and punch. The clean sound is on the darker side, but not unpleasantly so. I tend to like the JC-120 squeaky-clean thing, and this pickup does not cause the spikiness with that kind of sound that some other hot humbuckers do (Evolution, Steve Morse). One trick to get the goods out of this pickup: I have a three- position mini-toggle that gives me series, split, and parallel. The range of sounds I get that way gives me pretty much everything I need, and I play a variety of music: funk, fusion, R&B, rock, hiphop, prog, and world beat.

Comments about DiMarzio DP152 Super 3 Guitar Pickup:

I was looking for a good pickup that would pair with a Liquifire in the neck position. I wanted it hot, but not too hot, and I didn't want an overbearing bass presence that killed the highs and high meds. After exhaustive reading on both MF's site and the Dimarzio site, I settled on this Super 3 over a Super Distortion. I am thoroughly happy with my choice. The Super 3 is articulate, crisp and has a full-spectrum response. It's got some bass and mids, but it's got beautiful singing highs. Tons of harmonics, squeals and growls if you want them, but then if you go with a clean channel, it's bright and clear. Pairs VERY well with the Liquifire.

Comments about DiMarzio DP152 Super 3 Guitar Pickup:

Ok, so I bought a studio pro a month or so back...
I really liked the 57 classic in the neck, for the humbucked leads and the split sound for cleans.
I spent a few weeks tweaking the burstbucker pro until I got a satisfactory tone.
Today was my first rehearsal with it and although it sounded good....too much feed-back & squealing. (I use extremely High Gain heads and we play at a moderately loud level).

I didn't want to gate it anymore than it already was...so..I decided I'd try some pickups out in it that was for another project.

The Dimarzio Super distortion 3 (which has very little to almost non-existent reviews) for the bridge and a Super distortion 2 for the neck.
I have used the Super 2 in all my Jacksons in the neck with great results...the unknown was the Super 3.

The Super 3 has awakened a beast!
I am loving it ten-fold. Crunch, sustain, clarity...I have to back and play it some more!

Very thick midrange tone, and none of the brittle highs of some other "distortion" pickups. It has plenty of chunkiness for riffing on the low strings and enough power to make your leads stand out in a mix. Clean tone is not fantastic-but I'm pretty sure it was not intended for that purpose!

I bought this for my basswood RG after using a Tonezone, which in my opinion was a little sloppy sounding in the bridge. The Super 3 is superior. Very fluid sounding with that giant mid spike, and it absolutely screams. EXCELLENT harmonics, better than evos, d activators, and the tonezone by far. When split, it makes a very usable clean sound and is nice when shredding. I dont know how well it would sound in mahogany or heavy woods though

The Super 3 sounds amazing in my Les Paul clone. I grew up on 80's metal and I play a lot of Iron Maiden, Scorpions, Dio, Pyromania-era Def Leppard, etc. and this thing nails all of those tones and more. It sounds clear with no extra noise, no matter if playing into a multi-fx unit into my laptop for recording, or just plugged straight into my Marshall half stack.

I bought this pickup to use in a guitar a have always tuned in drop D for a more metal sound. I wanted a pickup that could hit all the squealing harmonics I could think of but wasnt just overloaded with distortion. This pickup covers a wide range of sound. It brings an amazing but clear distortion but also sounds amazing on clean channels. If your looking for a metal pickup that can do it all, The Super 3 is for you.

Absolute mid range tone w/ ultra highput for metal. Sparkling harmonics. I used this PU in an Ibanez 450RG (1990) & it got me through my metal phase in life.

I play in a punk Metal Band Pinche Gringos, My tone has never sounded better, This pickup offers a wide variety of options, a nice boost of midrange to bring out the punch and screams for solos. The Super 3 is the ultimate weapon for Metal,I would reccomend this pickup for anyone looking for that extra kick when you wanna be heard. I scrap just about every stock pickup, I have found that Dimarzio is Superior over any pickups I hav tried before and believe I have tried many different brands and I am totally satified with this product :)

My favorite DiMarzio. Just enough bass, but not too much. Mid hump, and cut highs. I just ordered 2 more so all three of my Ibanez RG's would have them.
