OVERVIEW

The result of years of research for a very demanding player: Steve Vai.

The DiMarzio DP159 Evolution Bridge Pickup is a hefty humbucker designed for maximum impact and power. The Evolution pickup's sound is tight, aggressive, and loud. The DP159 Evolution incorporates DiMarzio's patented dual-resonance coil configuration that senses more harmonic overtones than ordinary humbuckers. Perfect for solos that really cut through. Low notes are very tight, and the highs have a lot of presence. DiMarzio designed the DP159 pickup for Steve's Ibanez Jems, but it can add a lot of punch and definition to Les Paul and similar set-neck guitars -- even the lowest bass notes really jump out of the amp, and feedback occurs easily with a wide range of harmonic overtones.

Comments about DiMarzio DP159 Evolution Bridge Pickup:

Some of the reviews on the evolution pickups are completely misleading, but make no mistake these pickups were designed with the LEAD guitar player in mind. They are extremely loud and articulate. Great harmonics. Everytime I get a new pick up, I plug my axe into the crappiest amp I have and see if they sing and the evolution pick ups deliver. I dropped the evolution set into my Ibanez prestige and they are second to none, but let me shine some light for all you heavy metal monsters. These ARE NOT ideal for drop c heavy metal chugging. They have way too much high end sizzle, so if you only play the heaviest of metal, you've been warned. If your down with the buttery shrediest pickups around, GET SOME.

    DiMarzio DP159 Evolution Bridge Humbucker

Comments about DiMarzio DP159 Evolution Bridge Pickup:

I installed the DiMarzio Evolution bridge pickup into a Strat with a basswood body & a maple neck/rosewood fingerboard. This pickup is on the hot side, but is not the hottest pickup I've heard by any means. It has a great harmonic structure; pinched harmonics squeal with ease and natural harmonics sustain and ring out for days on end. If you play hard rock and Steve Vai style stuff, then this would be a pickup to carefully consider. However, if you play metal, this is not the pickup for you. Once you downtune past Eb standard with this pickup, the tightness that was there during your standard tuning disappears without a trace. This pickup is on the thin side to begin with, and is not apt for palm muting. So to recap: tight, aggressive humbucker with great harmonics and apt for Hard Rock and Steve Vai stuff, not so great for much else.

I replaced my stock pickups in my main Ibanez with the Evo bridge and neck pickups and it is louder! Improved overall sound quality and tones I get out of it. Very versatile in playing styles, it's very crisp and clear, every little mistake can be heard with these. I definitely recommend them, gonna order another set later this month for my back up Ibanez.

This pickups makes your guitar scream if you know how to play with it ;) It makes harmonics really pop out and adds snarl to your leads. Note that this pickup isnt the best for headbanging death metal riffing, it lacks some bottom end, but this pickup wasnt built for that purpose in mind. Overall its an excellent lead pickup.

Installed Evolution in my Warmoth Strat basswood body, maple neck. replaced it with a MoJoe becase I liked it in my other guitar but not so much in this one. Went back to the Evolution but with a 250Kohm volume potentiometer. Turned out to have the tone I was looking for, dare I say brown sound. If you find it to be too bright with a 500k pot., a 250k will warm it up.

just put mine in a schecter omen 6 yesterday. so far i'm very pleased w/ this pup as well as the neck evo pup. these pickups are loud. the bring out the natural sound of the guitar whether overdriven or clean. the bridge pup has snappy tones when on clean and when blended together they sound almost like a strat bridge single coil pup. i plan to buy another pair of these and put them in my lespaul. the one thing i don't like is that the instructions on installation aren't very clear so be sure you know what you're doing. great job dimarzio and steve vai!

i have one of these installed in my old js series Jackson dinky, in the neck position. you can't get a whole ton of low end chunk with this pickup, but there's enough to make it a good rhythm pickup. leads sound awesome with this pickup too, good harmonics and very high output. overall an awesome pickup

Comments about DiMarzio DP159 Evolution Bridge Pickup:

Just installed this in my RG 320DX (replaced the Tone Zone in the bridge) and oh boy am I happy. The first thing I noticed was the harmonics. Pinch harmonics are as easy as ever to achieve with this baby installed, even with my gain set at 1/2 (I play through an Orange head and 2x12-not a high gain amp.) It also has great articulation of the notes, and the clean sound is awesome too! Lots of treble but really strong bass as well, great all around pickup. I can only imagine how face-rippingly awesome it would be through something like a 5150, Engl, VHT, etc. It does depend on the player to bring out the best in it - the pickups shape the tone, the player makes the tone.

I had the chrome pickup put into my Epiphone Les Paul and this this absolutely screams! It is so versatile, you can get any tone you want out of this. My dad comes over to my house to play blues, and when he isn't there i play metal, and this pickup handles it all. Clear highs and thumping lows with a nice smooth middle, you can do anything you want with this. Highly recommended. I will be purchasing the Evolution Neck pickup soon because i am so impressed with this.

LesPaul Standard - VM 50W head w/Marshall 1960a cab. there probably isn't a better pu out there if like Slash or Mick Ronson. It has the medium/high output & clarity of a Bill Lawrence L500XL but warmer than the L500XL imo.

Comments about DiMarzio DP159 Evolution Bridge Pickup:

These pickups are amazing, but they were not what i expected. I was expecting a super hot pick lead pickup with the Evolution, so i placed a Liquifire in the neck and it is the best lead pickup their is. The evolution is an outstanding rythm pickup with really good finger tapping abilities. If your looking for a sharp lead pickup. DO NOT GET EVOLUTION!

Comments about DiMarzio DP159 Evolution Bridge Pickup:

I put the evolution in the bridge position of my Ibanez RGA and it worked great. I needed a hotter distortion with better hamonics and clarity; the evolution did the trick. It in no way is "too hot", it can do almost anything you want it to do, provided you play with your amp settings, volume knob, tone knob and whatever...any pickup has to be tweaked to sound right for certain situations. Other than that, great pickup, wonderful harmonics and distortion is clear and crisp.

          evolution vs. jb

          By SS396

          from Fargo, ND

Comments about DiMarzio DP159 Evolution Bridge Pickup:

I've been using a duncan sh-4 jb in my late 80's hm series strat for several years and have been extremely happy with it, but after reading the positive reviews for the evolution I decided to give it a try. I installed the evolution and expected to be blown away, but I wasn't, at least not at first. The evolution seemed like it was missing something compared to the jb, I played it for about 5 minutes and decided that I should sleep on it and try it again later. The next day I plugged in and gave it another try, and after a few minutes I discovered that I loved the way the pickup sounded. The evolution is more articulate compared to the jb and therefore less forgiving, it will quickly point out those quick little mistakes that the jb seems to do a good job of hiding. The evolution seems to have a little less output than the jb but very little. The jb does a better job of producing pinch harmonics compared to the evolution, but with the evolution each string has more definition and can be heard more clearly. In my opinion the evolution is a better sounding pickup than the jb but it lacks some of the qualities of the jb. So which pickup is better? I guess it depends on your playing style and abilities. Personally I like both pickups but I'm gonna stick with the evolution because it forces me to be a better player, which is a good thing!

Comments about DiMarzio DP159 Evolution Bridge Pickup:

I installed the EVO 159 bridge pickup along with a 158 Evo in the neck in an Ibanez RG270... and I'm not changin' it back. I ran it through a Marshall and a Fender. The difference over stock pickups was expected, but this was stunning. The highs scream and the bottom end makes the ground shake. Very powerful, loud, and holds onto tone through clean to hard distortion. These are my first DiMarzios. I rated the "Value" section an 8 because I think pretty much all pickups are a bit overpriced. I am very happy with the DiMarzio EVO's.

Comments about DiMarzio DP159 Evolution Bridge Pickup:

So I dropped one of these into the bridge of my guitar and wow. My guitar is a mahogany body so this thing gives me sweet low end punch, but has amazing highs and mids. Clean, it's nice and bell-like. Overdriven...be prepared for a ride. Every note is able to cut through, power chords are hard hitting, and it's overall, well balanced. Two more things, if you use effects with this pickup, it sounds awesome (I personally like an overdriven phaser). Also, coil tapping this gives it an air filled, reverbed sound which I find nice in the array of possible tones.

Comments about DiMarzio DP159 Evolution Bridge Pickup:

This is a totally great pickup. I just got it installed in my LTD EC-100QM lefty and it sounds 100x better than it did. I can get almost instant feedback if I want, and hold it for minutes on end. It really adds to the sustain of the guitar, and makes artificial harmonics really easy to do and natural harmonics scream! It makes the guitar sound very good in high distortion situations; it can get really distorted but never muddy at all! I highly recommend this pickup if you like to play fast, clean runs with maximum distortion or not.

This pickup is great, man! I just got two of these bad boys put in my Schecter and the thing screams. What a huge difference in sound and the notes ring SO much clearer all over the fretboard. I recommend this pickup for players who want an aggressive tone and who play lead. They scream on the highs and crunch on the lows. Way to go Dimarzio when they made this for Vai's Jem.

Incredible value! replaced the '59 pearly gates in my showmaster with this. this thing blows that seymour duncan out of the water. False harmonics are better on this pickup than any other I've heard. This pickup is also very crisp on high gain for solos but is NEVER thin or tinny. The clean is good for a humbucker (but the real clean is a strat) overall the best pickup for the money!
