Overall i would say this is an excellent pickup for anyone looking for a loud, meaty sounding bridge pickup that has nice thick cleans, and can crunch with the best of them when you turn the volume knob up!
This was exactly what i was looking for. I have a Schecter Solo-6 and i replaced the active EMG's with a Breed (DP165) in the neck, and Super Distortion (DP100) in the bridge (along with 500k controls). What an improvment. The EMG 81 was way to razor blade sharp and bright for me, and the 85 was nothing but mud and made using the neck pickup useless. The Breed, though still on the warm/dark side, made the Neck pickup usable and has the sound i was looking for. Volume plays a big role in the amount of chunk you get also. The neck pickup is so much more versatile now compared to the 85.
Let me tell you the Breed Neck is a very powerful pickup, i have it set well over 3/16" from the strings in order to get the volume to balance with the much more powerful SD in the bridge. I play mostly Heavy Rock, and Metal. (Metallica, Alice n Chains, Megadeath, Bush, AC/DC, etc...)
So far no issues with quality
Great value, Dimarzio probably the best bang for the buck IMO.

I have tried most of the dimarzio catalog and was looking for an improved neck pickup for a mahogony ibanez s540. I had been using Paf Pros in my basswood rRGs, but the PAF Pros have a glassy top in the mahogony guitars. I consulted dimarzio tech for a pickup similar to the PAF pro, but thicker with good harmonics.
The breed neck is a great clean pickup, but for high gain leads, it is a bit muddy on the low strings in a 22fret mahogony guitar. I also installed it in the bridge and it is a fat PAF style tone, not at cutting or articulate as a PAF pro. Compared to an air norton in the neck, it has less opennes and less bite, but more output so the tone is more solid and full.
The bridge pickup is an evo which is great for this guitar. The pickups balance well in output, but the breed is a touch too dark, imo. Maybe it would be perfect for a 24 fret or basswood instrument.
Dont get me wrong, it is a really good pickup and I am making it work. Changing it out is low on my todo list. The sound is round, tubular, warm, and full, I would just like a bit more bite. I am also going to experiment with lowering the bass string poles as the muddiness on low E-A is the only offputting thing.. those notes boom a little too much. I think I will try the evo neck and if that doesnt work out, maybe a norton bridge humbucker will be the right choice. The air norton has great tonal qualities, just not hot/tight enough, imo.

Comments about DiMarzio DP165 The Breed Neck Pickup:
I constructed my own Strat with HSH configuration and I threw a Breed in the neck position and the guitar sounds bubbly doing leads and solos. You know that warm and fuzzy feeling you get when you have a hot cup of cocoa on a cold winter day? Put that feeling through a Marshall JCM2000 Triple Super Lead and that's what the Breed sounds like. It's thick, rich and gives you a full body tone in the neck postion.
Comments about DiMarzio DP165 The Breed Neck Pickup:
I bought the breed for an Epiphone Les Paul in 2003. I have it paired with a Super Distortion in the bridge. I prefer the sound of the breed so much that I recently ordered the bridge version as well. This pickup is the king of creaminess and very versatile. It's ideal for every style I've used it for: want clean jazz tone? this one's got it, soulful blues tone? got it, smooth metal leads? you can't do better! If you like clarity, purity, and perfection in your tone then this is what you're looking for. This is not a super high-output monster, this is for purists.
Comments about DiMarzio DP165 The Breed Neck Pickup:
I installed an x2n in the bridge of my Ibanez Iceman and while it's a beast for metal, the output was too high for clean playing. I did some checking around and decided on "The Breed" for the neck position. WOW! Clean and lead parts are fat and sparkly and the pickup is very low noise. Also sounds great when used in conjunction with the x2n to add some chunk to palm muting. DiMarzio for life.
Comments about DiMarzio DP165 The Breed Neck Pickup:
I placed this pickup in the neck position of my Floyd Rose Classic Strat along with a Super 3 in the bridge and it rocks. I wanted a neck pickup with fat and warmth to complement the bridge and the Breed Neck does just that.
Comments about DiMarzio DP165 The Breed Neck Pickup:
I put one of these in the neck of, believe it or not, an Artcore along with an EVO2 in the bridge. This pick up flows out in color, so sweet you could almost taste it. Zero noise, just perfect Satriani-esq brilliance. Kind of gives off a PRS clean sound. I took the EVO out, that was a waste of time and money and put in my new absolute favorite pickup. Seth Lover. Phenomenal!
Comments about DiMarzio DP165 The Breed Neck Pickup:
Got this guy off ebay and in an Ibanez S620EXQM along with an Evolution bridge. I love the combo. Harmonics jump off the evo but it's tamed by the breed. You could play anything from chunky rhythm to jazz in this position. I love the combo. Way better than the fake emgs stock. I was worried the combo might be too much with my JSX but it's the perfect balance. I love these.
Comments about DiMarzio DP165 The Breed Neck Pickup:
I have a Schecter C1+ and i wanted to change my stock pick ups. I wanted something warm and buttery for the neck so i checked it out, liked it and bought it. Its loud and warm with great sustain. Solos are thick, warm, smooth and buttery. You can get great sustain from it. Perfect for blues. This pick up is great! Very responsive and warm.
Comments about DiMarzio DP165 The Breed Neck Pickup:
I'm playing an LP standard, Boogie DC5 thru Marshall 1960a cab. When it comes to overdrive, this pickup matches the Evolution bridge perfectly. If you're looking for a fat and characteristic lead tone, this may be your pickup. It's got a full tone- not thin sounding in the least. I'd also recommend the Duncan Pearly Gates neck (which has a tad less output, but more high-end character imo). Both are awesome pickups.
