OVERVIEW

High-output single-coil sound with none of the noise.

No humbucking pickup sounds exactly like a vintage single-coil, but the Cruiser is about as close as it gets. The special dual-resonance design allows one coil to act as a woofer and the other as a tweeter. This extends the range of the noise-canceling design and allows the best qualities of each coil to be enhanced while fine tuning the output. There is less magnetic pull, and it still sounds clean, clear, and bright. Output: 140mV.

Recommended for neck position with DP187, or neck & middle with hotter bridge like Fast Track 1, Chopper, Pro Track, or full-size humbuckers (See recommended accessories box on this page).

Excellent vintage-toned humbucker

Comments about DiMarzio DP186 Cruiser Neck Pickup:

The closer the Cruisers are to the strings, the hotter the signal gets. The Cruisers get very close to vintage tones when they're set close to the pickguard (Mine are 1/16" off). Do they sound like vintage pups? No, but they get VERY close. They're only missing a bit of sparkle to make them stand with that crowd. I have custom wound sets and Fender Custom Shop pups to compare them to. The Cruisers are not in the same league as custom pickups, but if you're upgrading from most Mexi or American standard pups, these will be an improvement.

If you want PAF Tones, the Cruisers will get there if they're set very close to the strings. These are very height-sensitive pickups, so you've got lots of tones to choose from.

Cruisers work great with effects. String separation is excellent and they stay clear even with a thick silicon fuzz. They're also pick-sensitive, so the heavier you dig in, the more you'll get out of them. Pinch harmonics are also pretty easy.
I have mine wired to 250k pots with a .22 cap on a No-Load tone control. 500k pots will brighten them up, which I think might be too much.
Well, a pickup doesn't do much except transfer magnetic disturbance into an audio signal, so features aren't a pickup's forte'. However, these are hum canceling and can be coil-split. I guess those are features.
Build-quality is excellent on all Dimarzios. The magnets are even and the coils are consistent. Wiring and solders are tidy. The pickups fit perfectly into the standard Strat pickguard. Output level is also consistent between pickups. Both of mine had the same output readings.
These are great pickups, but a slight bit pricey. Buying three of these almost add up to what you'd pay for some custom sets. The Bill Lawrence blade pups are actually cheaper, but they they don't have the same tone as Cruisers. BL's are weaker and a bit tinny sounding. But the Dimarzios are a quality pup with no shortcuts.

Comments about DiMarzio DP186 Cruiser Neck Pickup:

I had this jewel installed in my MIM Strat. Once I started playing, I couldnt believe the sound. For one thing I left the old strings still on and it still sounded amazing. In my opinion these cruisers should be standrd in all Strats. I have the neck position one and it has heavenly clear tones and red hot blues tone. If thats what your looking for, you cant go wrong with one. I highly recomend it.

Comments about DiMarzio DP186 Cruiser Neck Pickup:

I was looking for a humbucker that I could use in my Hamer CXQ4 and that would make it warm, jazzy, and clear. This was an awesome choice--recommended highly, but before you buy one of these pickups, make sure your body will fit a four conductor wire through the trough. If not, you have a painful project ahead of you.

Comments about DiMarzio DP186 Cruiser Neck Pickup:

I bought this pickup for the neck position, to restore an old guitar to which I have deep sentimental value(stratocaster-like style, was a gift, long story). I paired it with an Area '61 DP416 on the middle position. and a Crunch Lab DP 228 Humbucker in the bridge position. I originally wanted to put it in a "HSH" nomenclature, but the body would not fit another humbucker. This was the best compromise for this. Not only makes the guitar look great on first impression, once you plug her in you will get a very unique sound. The Cruiser is very sensitive to the height (proximity to the strings), so you may want to play with the screws up and down until you find your happy medium. It is almost like having a little humbucker, but not quite -- very nice sound and range, though. I play this pick up mostly clean, but you can get some very nice tone when throwing some dirt to it. Just remember, depending on how well constructed the guitar you chose to put these on will ultimately determine the overal sound quality. Regardless, it made a huge improvement to my guitar in particular.

Comments about DiMarzio DP186 Cruiser Neck Pickup:

These are great and quiet pickups that change character quite dramatically depending on height. Play with the height adjustment right away, it is dramatic.
I have these on an American Deluxe alder/rosewood with a DP-224 in the bridge. They pair nicely and combos are very quacky. I also use a schaller megaswitch "E" model and it pairs the AT1 with the neck cruiser in the middle 3 position resulting in a sound much like BB's Lucille.

Great pickup and quiet, very quiet.

Comments about DiMarzio DP186 Cruiser Neck Pickup:

Such a great pickup! I installed a PAF Pro in my American Deluxe HSS strat and the N3 in the next had a huge volume difference so I installed a pro track in the neck but it was too fat and muddy so I got this. Problem solved! Volume is the same and it delivers that sweet neck strat tone! A+

Comments about DiMarzio DP186 Cruiser Neck Pickup:

I have a partscaster Strat that is very high quality. 1-piece alder body with thin nitro finish, flame maple neck with darker rosewood fretboard, gold hardware. It's a great feeling guitar, and beautiful, but my first choice of pickups were Klein Vintage ones and were very low output. Pretty nice but I preferred my other guitars. I replaced the pickups with a Tone Zone S in the bridge and a pair of Criusers in neck and middle. This has now become my go to guitar. The neck and middle are beautifully warm and great for anything from jazzy cleans to blues to rock leads. The bridge Tone Zone S is awesome! I can play anything on that but it stands out with heavier riffs. Even drop tuned stuff is tight and punchy and the notes are clearly distinguishable. This is an amazing combination of pickups. I went from totally ignoring this guitar to loving it and using it all the time.
