OVERVIEW

Designed to give Steve Vai more headroom and dynamics.

The original Evolution bridge guitar pickup did exactly what Steve Vai wanted it to do: kick butt and produce serious scream. The Evo 2 DP215 bridge pickup was designed to be more complex -- the same basic tone with increased headroom and dynamics, so that the sound kills on 10 and cleans up when the volume is rolled down. With a little less power than the original Evolution, Evo 2 balances perfectly with the Evolution neck model and performs equally well with high gain and vintage amps.

I bought this a couple of years ago to install in an Ibanez RG to repalce the stock Infinity pickup. That Infinity sounded limp and lifeless; I figured the Evo 2 had what I was looking for based upon the description and reviews. I love this pickup! It works very well in high-gain rigs. Pinch harmonics are just begging to be played through this pickup! It is very sensitive, so ham-handed players might be put off by string noise or fret buzz. If you're a serious player who demands an accurate and aggressive sound from a passive pickup, this is it. I should mention that it dows clean up nicely with volume changes or lighter attack.

I put the stock pickups back in the RG before I sold it so I could put hte Evo 2 in another guitar of mine. I highly recommend this pickup.

I have been a SD man my whole career but recently purchased an Ibanez guitar to start doing some divebombing again. I like to do my own customizing and replaced the stock inf in the bridge with the evo2. What a waste of time that was! Sorry Dimarzio but I have to go back to SD. The pickup is dull & lifeless. Twangy on the clean settings. Frankly the stock pickup sounded better IMHO. And yes I know how to do proper setups. All in all very dissappointing. I have a frankenstein guitar with some mighty-mites that will scream past this pickup. I can't say anything about theyre other models, havent used them. Just dont waste your money on this POS!

Good Pickup

Comments about DiMarzio DP215 Evo 2 Bridge Pickup:

No pickup will match every guitar. No pickup will match every style. Some pickups have allot of potencial in the right guitar, some don't, this one does. In my RG1570 it sounds really good for modern lead, and modern styles. It's probably not the best for every style of metal. But if you into doing great modern lead tones that are balanced and tight, clear and powerful, with no harshness, then this pickup is awesome. If you want it for huge power chords and drop tunings look elsewhere. For me in combination with a Dimarzio PAF Pro in the neck and a Virtual Lead in the middle my RG1570 delivers a great range of killer lead tones. Again it might not sound good in every guitar, no pickup will, but in the right guitar it fly's.

Comments about DiMarzio DP215 Evo 2 Bridge Pickup:

I popped one into an old ibanez so I could record at school with a decent sound without the risk of losing a better guitar. Worked better than I could have hoped. Now at home I use it at band practice and it cuts so well, I'll grab it over my ESP with an 81 in the bridge without much thought. Its a great pickup, at a great price.

Comments about DiMarzio DP215 Evo 2 Bridge Pickup:

I'm playing an LP standard, Budda 18 head, marshall 1960a cab. Tried the Evolution, Pearly Gates, JB, Alnico II Pro, Custom5. When it comes to "OD-on-10" tone, I've loved the PG and JB for their warmth and crispiest. But the evo has won me over. In addition to being toasty, it gives the clearest definition to individual notes that I've heard so far. The bass is strong w/o being boomy. Treble is clear w/o shrillness. If you're looking for awesome OD tone- give this a shot!

A Good Replacement

Comments about DiMarzio DP215 Evo 2 Bridge Pickup:

I replaced the Seymour Duncan JB that came in my Jackson DK2M with this pickup (f-spaced model). I wanted to try out a DiMarzio pickup for two reasons: 1) a lot of the SD pickups seemed to have a lot more treble than bass or mids and I wanted desperately to avoid getting an ice-picky guitar sound since my guitar already has bright woods (maple neck and fretboard) and 2) quite a few of my favorite guitarists were using them, so I figured I'd see what all the fuss is about. I've been playing for a little over 4 years. I predominately play Metal, but I do venture in to other common musical territories. The amp I currently use is a Line 6 Spider III and yes I am aware it isn't the most spectacular amp out there, but it's the only thing I've got! There is no chain of effects or pedals in my setup other than the guitar and amp.To me, this pickup does not entirely blow the JB entirely out of the water, but it still did a very good job at doing some things and not doing some things I wish the JB would do. For starters, this pickup cleaned up my bridge pickup sound quite a bit. The previous pickup seemed to produce a little bit of unwanted feedback and noise in general, so the fact that I didn't get this out of the Evo 2 was a pleasant surprise. This new pickup is a bit more balanced in my guitar; it has less highs but they don't sound too thin, the mids are there but not overwhelming, and the bass is not loose but rather a tad bit tighter. The output isn't too high compared to other pickups either. I'd say is more or less the same as the JB and since I love playing Metal it is quite disappointing, but that can all be fixed when I upgrade to a higher gain amp. Another thing that I really enjoy about this pickup is how it still retains a great deal of its character when you roll the volume down. I understand that for some that is not a good thing, but to me it is. The JB would just become an absolute mess if I rolled the volume down. It would sound ridiculously muddy and just bad overall. When I roll the volume down, the Evo gives me more of a Plexi sound, there is still a good deal of power and clarity present and it responds quite well to your pickup attack. I would hardly solo using the bridge pickup because the notes just sounded way too sharp and shrill, but I feel more encouraged now that I have a pickup that has less highs. In the end I would say this was a very wise investment.

Too thin!

By Anonymous

Comments about DiMarzio DP215 Evo 2 Bridge Pickup:

I have a fender strat and installed this into my bridge position and i'm sorry I did! i'm using a JSX Head and this pick up is way too thin. The highs can almost break a glass, way to sharp. OK harmonics, but i'm returning mine. My original pick up has way more range and better tones. Everything that comes from this evo 2 sounds really thin and cold. On the ultra (high gain) channel, still really thin. If your want a deep warm crunch when you dig in, don't get this pick up. I expected for the output to be low, but you can really hear the difference.

Comments about DiMarzio DP215 Evo 2 Bridge Pickup:

I have the original EVO on my Charvel. It is a bit harsh for my taste. The EVO II is a different story. This pickup is installed on my Frankenstein guitar. This guitar consist of a Fender Starcaster body, Johnson neck, Planet Wave tuners, one volume knob, EVO II pickup and a stock Fender tremolo. This guitar has become my second favorite. After assembled together and tune up by a guitar luthier, it plays and sounds amazing. The sound is fat, dynamic and clear. I simply love this pickup. It does Van Halen very well.

Comments about DiMarzio DP215 Evo 2 Bridge Pickup:

I installed these myself into a squire strat.. ( I know.. A squire??) It was my first guitar so there is sentemental value. Anyway these pickups sound awsome in all positions. I used a 5-way multi-pole switch. Beautiful cleans on all channels, and crazy sustain and harmonics on distortion very versital pickups. Only slight problem is the sound of the distortion, but it's probably me and not the pickups. Still have to tweak them. ( Used evo2 for bridge and evo for neck.

Intended Agression

Comments about DiMarzio DP215 Evo 2 Bridge Pickup:

This is a very well calibtrated pickup. For an agressive bridge pickup it's not too bright. It sustains beautifully and notes ring out into harmonics giving a very long and streamlined sound. Bends are very sharp sounding and shred licks are easy to achive, although mistakes are made obvious by the pickups dynamic edge. This pickup will work well if you don't sympathize or feel regret for your listeners. It reminds me of a Paragreen Falcon soaring hundreds of feat above the other birds in the sky, pinned by the updraft with the ability to plunge with lightning speed and cut through prey with razor percision. But don't trust me, try it out!

Comments about DiMarzio DP215 Evo 2 Bridge Pickup:

Dynamics, dynamics, dynamics! A light touch yeilds a nice round clean note with good sustain, and hard touch gives great overdriven sounds with harmonic overtones and great sustain. I play mostly clean and with the volume rolled down a bit this pu is just a fat and smooth as most PAF imho, but has way more versatility. They are not lying when the say put the volume on ten and screams. It does so much more. Don't put this pickup in the shred catagory, sure it shreds, but it does everything else really well.

Comments about DiMarzio DP215 Evo 2 Bridge Pickup:

I've played the paf pro, tone zone, evolution, Duncan's JB and some few other duncan pickups(forgotten the model) and seriously this pickup is just firgging awesome, it does metal, shred and blues very well, I even like the darn thing clean, it's the most balance pickup ever and one of the thickest sounding pickup I've ever tried, This is what evolution should have sounded like, if the evolution sounded like this, surely there won't be any evo2 already ;)

Comments about DiMarzio DP215 Evo 2 Bridge Pickup:

Amazing. I play a Jackson Ps2 Performer. I liked the Jackson Humbucker until I craved more crunch and power. I bought this thing and when it was installed there was an immediate difference. It can hold super meaty thick crunch chords but also shriek out your high notes. It's a win win on this one. Great price for an amazing pickup.

Comments about DiMarzio DP215 Evo 2 Bridge Pickup:

It took me a while to install this in my Mexican vintage 70's reissue. Unfortunately the bridge slot was of single coil size. I COULD NOT UPGRADE IT. So I did the unthinkable. I freaking carved the thing ugly. And did a horrible job. I basically messed the up the interior and already I was losing morale. I was scared for my life! But eventually I spaced it out evenly and then installed the pickup. As soon as I covered the guitar something strange happened..The sound..just....beautiful...I created a frankenstein. This strat has been re-engineered to become a monster. Get this pickup and you'll what I mean.

Comments about DiMarzio DP215 Evo 2 Bridge Pickup:

I've repleased my stock pickups with EVO2 in the bridge and FERNANDES SUSTAINER FSK-101 in neck.I play for about 11 years mostly Clapton, EJ, Satriani, Vai, Metallica. My guitar is made of poplar body and bolt-on maple neck whit oak fingerboard and fixed bridge. Its actualy a STRAT type and I played thru DIGITECH GNX1 and DeLarios amp. EVO2 is what I've expected. Very clean, powerful and defined sound exeptional dynamics, long sustain, great harmonics, very quiet and resposive. My guitar is naturaly mid eq sounding, has less lows and highs and naturaly good sustain and with EVO2 became so joyable and beautiful sounding. The right tone for me. The low strings are clear w/out being muddy and highs are clear and round instead of being thin and overall SOLID TONE.The Fernandes FSK-101 added endless sustain and I must say that this is the best combination. If you like great solo shreds, heavy dist power chords and palm mutes (like I do) but along with astonishing, pristine tone on clean chanel I recomend You The EVO2. Simply amazing pickup.

Evolved My Sound

Comments about DiMarzio DP215 Evo 2 Bridge Pickup:

I bought this to replace the Bill Lawrence LX-500 (Dimebag's pickup) in my Dean ML 79. I was tired of having a one way pickup, so I bought this. When I got it, I didn't expect it to have as much punch as it did. I figured this pickup would be soft and not really suited Pantera-type metal. I was dead wrong. This thing has AMAZING punch while still keeping its clarity. It sustains very well and the harmonics are endless. This is better than the Bill Lawrence in the fact that it can do anything except get me a beer. It has a very great clean sound, which the Bill Lawrence didn't. The tone of the Evo 2 is very smooth, it has a very 3-D type tone (if that makes sense to you). I'm not a fan of Steve Vai, so I didn't buy this because his name was on it. Overall, the sound is great, has dynamics, is 3-D, punchy, clear and great with medium distortion. I'm planning to slap a PAF Pro in the neck to go with it. What a combo it will make!

I bought this pickup and installed it in my S470. Boy did it make a difference. The leads are amazing: loud and clear, and the distortion this pickup gets is a very rich thick and meaty distortion. This thing wails...!! This thing is a very awesome pickup that will beef up your guitar!!!

EVO 2

Comments about DiMarzio DP215 Evo 2 Bridge Pickup:

The Evo 2 has the most amazing sound that I have heard come out of a guitar. I put two of them in an old Ibanez guitar, and it turned it into a mediocre at best guitar into my main guitar above an ESP Eclipse, and a Fender Strat with a Seymour Duncan Invade in the bridge position. The Evo 2 is simply amazing.

Comments about DiMarzio DP215 Evo 2 Bridge Pickup:

I had this baby installed in my Ibanez rg2550z prestige model. I was a little skeptical installing it into a basswood body, but let me tell you this pickup really screams. It gives a beautiful range of tones, and harmonics really stand out on this guitar. With my Ibanez/Dimarzio pickups in the guitar I could never get a pinch harmonic, now I find it hard not to hit one. Although it's not too forgiving on mistakes, this is a excellent buy that will make your guitar scream!

Comments about DiMarzio DP215 Evo 2 Bridge Pickup:

I got this pickup for my birthday because I wanted something to replace the single coil in my strat. I went with the Evo 2 because I wanted to keep my strat sounding like a strat, and it does with the exception that everthing is crystal clear and I can actually turn on the distortion without having to turn off everything electrical in my house. I love this pickup, I haven't found a fault with it yet outside of the fact that it didn't come stock, and I have pretty much stopped using the middle and neck single coils. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for something that can do everything well. I gave the features a 4.5 because I can't quite nail Slashes tone in November Rain or the Walk tone from Pantera but those are two extremes.
