OVERVIEW

Power, tone, and definition.

Joe Satriani has used the Fred as his main bridge pickup for years. This year Joe asked DiMarzio for a hotter and bigger version to replace the Fred in his Ibanez guitars. In response, DiMarzio created the DP216 Mo' Joe Bridge Pickup, and it's all about tone and definition. The name says it all. It has more power than the Fred, but it doesn't sacrifice clarity or dynamics.

Additionally, all the harmonics that made the Fred guitar pickup so good are all there, ready to jump out at the touch of a guitar pick. Having more output makes it a perfect match for the PAF Joe in the neck position. The combination delivers great versatility and control from rhythms to solos.

Recommended For: bridge position, solid and semi hollowbody guitars.

Tech Talk: The last few years have seen Joe develop a new signature tube amp and start using heavier-gauge strings more often. Both developments emphasized the importance of the Mo' Joe pickup in having a high degree of string separation without sounding sterile or processed. DiMarzio achieved this by slightly increasing the distance between the center frequencies that the coils are tuned to, without increasing DC resistance. The result is a pickup that's both hotter and more articulate.

I've found my new favorite pickup and it's FULL of Mojo. I've used Dimarzio pickups for about 20 years and tried many models. My favorite was the Norton. It's still an awesome pickup. But I decided to try something new and went with the Mo Joe. The PAF Joe is my favorite neck pickup ever so I figured I'd try it's match for the bridge. It's not a high power pickup. It's medium output but it sounds louder and hits harder than most medium power pickups. The lows have just the right amount of snap and chunk and the mids and highs match well. The whole sound is very balanced. If you're looking for a high output pickup, I would still consider this. The Mo Joe has incredible tone. My 6505 plus amp has plenty of gain so I was more interested in clarity and tone. I think high output Pups make mush out of your sound through high gain amps. Not necessary to have high output Pups. This thing is so fun to play with it's screaming harmonics and burning sustain that resolves into first and second order harmonics, I don't want to put my guitar down. Funny, I have Satch's pickups, but don't sound like him. They make me sound like a better version of me. Thanks Larry Dimarzio and Joe Satriani.

I was so disappointed in this pickup. Actually, to make a long story short, I brought in a Dimarzio Transition PUP to my guitar tech that I special ordered due to weird specs on my guitar. When my tec attempeted to install this and it wouldn't fit. After sending the pup back to Dimarzio twice, I was done. He so happened to have this Mo Joe pup in stock so I thought, " IF it's good enough for Joe, it's got to be good." Well, I was wrong. I tweeked my amp for two hours and just could not get the sound that I wanted. Very trebly and ice picky like a telecaster. In my other exact guitar I installed a Andy Timmons At-1 and it is amazing. As soon as my Bare Knuckles Rebel Yell PUP arrives, this is coming out.

Comments about DiMarzio DP216 Mo' Joe Bridge Pickup:

I have an Ibanez S470. Three pickup HSH configuration. Mahogany back with a maple front and neck. With a Floyd Rose trem system. The Neck pickup is a DiMarzio PAF-Pro, the middle pickup is a DiMarzio Tone Zone S. The Mo' Joe balances well with either the front or Middle PU but definitely stands out on its own. In phase with the middle PU it shows its character and out of Phase it quacks like a duck.

O.K. this might be the one to get. You start out with a Basswood body Strat and put this in the bridge position and lookout! Joe showed all the possibilities in the demo. I can only go to 4 on my Twin. Even the documentation from DiMarzio explained the special wiring hookup. Cool down, Soldering Iron. If Joe needed this pickup, then so do you.

Comments about DiMarzio DP216 Mo' Joe Bridge Pickup:

I have an Ibanez S570MQM. My guitar is a thin slab of Mahogany with a maple net/fretboard and quilted maple top. In other words it is pretty bright. The amp I'm using is a Blackstar HT-5R combo and a Peavey Vypyr 75 watt. First thoughts when I got this pickup was that it was horrible in sound and ice pick sharp. Not to mention is was picking up a lot of noise but that is because of the house I'm in. It also seemed thin and twangy. Nevertheless I was able to tweek my amp and turn down the tone knob and now I can honestly say that I like the sound of this pickup as it is very "juicy" sounding, as I heard someone say from a youtube video. The notes come out really clear and harmonics are sharp. This is a hot PAF style pickup, meaning it has a vintage sound almost with single-coil properties, but not as sharp. You need mids and volume to get this pickup thick sounding. Lead work on this pickup is very significant and its voice is beautiful. Chords just rock with this pickup, but are not dark. Soak this pickup with gain then dial down the volume to clean up. It works like a charm when you need to change your sound on the fly. I definitely recommend this pickup, I would suggest getting this pickup for a darker setup to let your guitar shine through the mix. My is very bright but I have headroom to darken it up.

Comments about DiMarzio DP216 Mo' Joe Bridge Pickup:

I recently purchased an Ibanez Prestige S5520K, and while I truly love this fantastic guitar, I've always found that Ibanez' stock pickups lack character... to me they're missing that intangible that gets you really excited to play.

So I did a TON of research before I bought the Mo' Joe for the bridge of my Prestige. I'm not the sort that wants to swap-out pups every two weeks, and I really wanted to get this right so I could get past it and play.

As I was doing my research, one thing that I ran into again and again is that the people who were dropping them into dense, tightly-grained bodies (usually mahagony) were thrilled to pieces with them, but people that dropped them into lighter bodies with a looser grain (like basswood for example) hated them or were just sort of *meh* towards them. The biggest complaint seemed to be muddyness--there's got to be something to it because I saw this complaint probably a dozen times from varying sources.

Luckily for me, the Ibanez 'S' body is a thin slab of solid mahogany, so I gave it a shot.

I must say, this pup sounds FANTASTIC in my Prestige. The guitar was already crazy quiet with the stock pups, honestly now I can leave it plugged in and set it down with the volume all the way up, and if there's not enough going on to generate natural feedback you would swear the volume was on 0!

As for the tone itself, I was looking for was something approaching the sound of PAFs in a Les Paul with a little more definition. For me this pup totally nailed it. Harmonics are effortless and ring like a bell, sustain is outstanding (although a lot of that is the guitar itself), and overall it's just a really balanced, great sounding rock guitar. It sounds nice clean as well, very balanced with sparkly overtones.

If you do have a softer-bodied guitar you might want to consider something else, although I can't say that from personal experience, only from what I've read. For me this pup is a home run!

I put this, as well as a DP190 air classic into my BC Rich bich to replace the stock PU's
the tone of this thing is stuff of ledgands. its clear and bright without becomming annoying as the stock bridge was. with pinch harmonics, it is brilliant. either it makes them easier to nail, or how it makes them sound causes you to try them more often making it seem easier through practice.
overall, I put this one a little ahead of the seymour Duncan dimebucker.

Just replaced a Duncan Designed pickup with the Mo Joe in my Schecter. I love the guitar, but distorted it would get a little muddy. This pickup took care of that! Clear tone, great harmonics, sounds great clean and dirty. I couldn't be happier with this pickup.

Stuck in bridge with an Air Norton in the neck on my Epi 58 Korina Flying V reissue. I was nearly ready to trade the V - love the neck but tones were only so - so. But now? Now I keep putting down the Les Paul to play the V! This pup is so clear - great overdriven tones, cleans up well ( I added the push pull vol pot to tap the pup) and just couldn't be happier. Really really tight punchy and yet clear and distinct tone. Considering adding them to the Les Paul as well! Highly recommended!

I bought a Schecter Blackjack C-1 FR and I was happy this the stock p-ups, but I added the Mo' Joe in the bridge position and I can tell a huge difference in sound. Mo' Joe is very hot and has slight overdriven sound when the guitar volume is maxed! But if you roll back the volume it cleans up wonderfully. It responds to your pick attack very well regardless of your volume setting. I'm totally happy with this pick-up. Great for any style, but perfect for a lil' Satch Boogie!
