OVERVIEW

Excellent vintage tone with today's tech benefits.

The DiMarzio DP223 PAF bridge position humbucker pickup uses new technology to duplicate the qualities of vintage electric guitar pickups--without sacrificing the presence and open sound of the best vintage humbuckers. This 36th anniversary PAF bridge pickup, a hotter version of the PAF, isn't just for set-neck 24-3/4" scale guitars, but is also an excellent bridge pickup for tremolo-equipped bolt-on neck guitars.

There was no such thing as a neck or bridge humbucker in the 1950s, but there was a wide range of performance between individual pickups that made some better suited to one position. Some of the old pickups had a lot of wire on the coils, which created more power and a warmer tone.

Want to go totally retro? The DiMarzio DP223 PAF Bridge pickup in standard spacing is also available with authentic vintage bobbins in glossy black, glossy double cream or glossy black and cream zebra; vintage "Patent Applied For" long-legged nickel-silver base, 1-conductor cable and your choice of polished and plated or vintage worn cover.

The 36th anniversary DiMarzio DP223 pickup is recommended for: Bridge position, can also be used in neck position with hotter bridge models.

Tech Talk: The DiMarzio PAF bridge pickup has the best qualities of the Virtual PAF bridge and Virtual Hot PAF pickups and then some. It's as loud as the VHPAF but has as much low-end and midrange definition as the VPAF bridge model. The highs are actually bigger and smoother than either model. The 4-conductor version also splits very well. Single-coil mode is bright, but not at all sterile-sounding.

I've been playing for nearly 30 years, and admittedly I've been a "Dimarzio guy" for much of that time. My typical guitar was an ash/alder super-strat with a Tone Zone in the bridge position. I've tried a variety of other pickups, but I kept coming back to that sound.

Last year I built a custom Warmoth Explorer (all mahogany, maple neck, OFR tremolo) and decided to give the SD JB pickup a shot. I was worried such a thick slab of mahogany would sound undefined and muddy with my usual Tone Zone. The JB sounded pretty good for a while until I realized there was a noch in the mid-range and a spike in the upper mids that I just couldn't EQ out. Boy did I try to EQ it out, but it just wasn't happening. Live recordings revealed the JB sounded thin and sterile in that particular guitar. There was no way around it; multiple live recordings don't lie.

After some research I settled on the DP223 in the bridge and the DP103 in the neck. It is a vast, vast improvement. The last few gigs my tone has been thick, rich, warm, and loaded with harmonics, while still retaining the clarity I wanted. This pickup is responsive to variations in picking, and cleans up nicely by rolling off the volume knob. I play a variety of music from low to very high gain and this pickup does it all.

I also have both the DP223 and DP103 split and they sound awesome this way as well. Of course they don't quack like single coils in a strat, but they work really well for clean picked lines/chords, etc.

Overall I must say I'm extremely pleased with the feel and sound of my guitar now. These pickups were the final pieces of the puzzle for me. I have never in my years of playing been as satisfied with my tone as I have been since these were installed.

I recently purchased a PRS Single cut SE for playing live. Not the quality of my Gibson Les Paul Custom, but a less expensive quality guitar that could take the rigors of live performance and still sound good.

I decided to upgrade the stock pickups to get a better quality sound. I heard the Gibson 57' Classic's, Dimarzio and Seymour Duncan were all about the same. (NOT! Read on.)

I looked at the price of all 3 brands and decided on the Dimarzio DP103 and DP223. The Gibson's were twice price. I then had the best guitar work guy in the state install the new Dimarzio pickups.

I soon discovered why there was such a price difference between Gibson and Dimarzio. And it is NOT just the name brand thing. The Dimarzio DP 103 and DP 223 pickups are poor at best. And that's being way to kind.

The pickups are very thin sounding, no warmth, no bottom end, no roundness! They were so trebly and "twangy" sounding that the guitar sounded more like a really cheap single coil Stratocaster than a PRS with Humbucker's. Frankly, Dimarzio pickups do not rate one star.

But it gets worse. Read on.

One of the reasons I chose the Dimazio was they have an "exchange" program. Supposedly if you are unhappy with the product they will exchange for a different pickup. Yeah right!

So I called Dimarzio and spoke to their "tech support" guy. I politely explained the pickups were just not the sound I expected and would like to exchange them for one of their other pickup models. From the start, he was extremely rude. I was told there was nothing wrong with the pickups and there was no way Dimarzio would exchange them. Period!

I politely asked again, saying that I really needed to exchange them and was there someone in management that I could appeal to for an exchange. The Dimarzio "Tech Support" guy replied NO! "Not going to happen". Period! Without a doubt this was the rudest and worse support I have ever encountered in my musical career. (I suspect they only have one "Support Guy" too. I finally advised him, I would probably have to return them to the retailer then. He said "You do what you have to do", And then he hung up on me.

So that's just what I did. I returned them. Musician's Friend is awesome. I had no such problems with them. They happily exchanged them for the Gibson 57' Classic and Classic plus no problem. And WOW! What a Difference. Pay the extra amount for the Gibson 57' Classic's. They have an incredible sound that just keeps giving. Just go read the reviews on the Gibson's. They are all true.

Avoid Dimarzio products like the plague. Trust me. This is THE review to read for the Dimarzio pickups. Buyer beware.

Comments about DiMarzio DP223 PAF Bridge Humbucker 36th Anniversary Electric Guitar Pickup:

Bought this to replace a DiMarzio Virtual Vintage PAF in a Gibson Les Paul when I realized the Virtual Vintage PAF was not F-Spaced, which is what the guitar needed. Otherwise, I had been happy with the VVPAF. But I like the 36th Anniv. even better...the highs are rounded off a bit more than the VVPAF, which is a good thing for my guitar, plus there is a noticeable increase in bass response with the accurately spaced poles. The 36th Anniv also has just slightly more output, which I also like. All in all, I'm very pleased!!

Comments about DiMarzio DP223 PAF Bridge Humbucker 36th Anniversary Electric Guitar Pickup:

Put in bridge position of Japanese Les Paul. Vantage VLP-500 (circa 1984)This is basically a metric version of a Gibson LP. Mahogany body, but with bolt on mahogany neck. Naturally a dark sounding guitar without much sustain and somewhat difficult harmonics especially at the 5th fret. I've owned this guitar for aprox 30 years and can't see getting rid of it since it plays excellent but has low resale value. I removed a Jackson J80C that seemed weak and not enough clarity. This DP233 gives better clarity to each note. Highs sound good and not shrill. Not high output but I was looking for a more classic LP tone which I think it now has. Immediately I noticed my boss pedals react better. I was able to increase distortion to get more singing tone without getting fuzzy or screechy. Clean tone is very nice too. I also notice good timber changes between same notes on different strings. This allows for good solo characteristics depending on what position I play in. I use a coil splitter which gives me a better telecaster type of tone than before. Bright and clear but not squeaky. My first pick up swap in 34 years of playing. Instructions were easier that anticipated. Very usable tone now where before I did not play this guitar much I certainly will now. It's like a different guitar that I'm already familiar with. I have Seymour Duncans in another guitar so I did not want to duplicate the same/similar tone in this one. That's why I went with Dimarzio. It gives me better variation between guitars. Not disappointed at all.

Comments about DiMarzio DP223 PAF Bridge Humbucker 36th Anniversary Electric Guitar Pickup:

I have a semi-hollow (Godin Flat Five x) whose pickups were tarnishing from hand sweat so I replaced them with these. I was looking for something with vintage (i.e. lower) output that would retain some of the character of the semi hollow body. I was hoping for more of an ES-335 sound but ended up with more of a Les Paul sound. This could be more due to my lack of understanding of the aspects that make up guitar tone and not picking the right pickups for what I was looking for. For example- the woods and body cavity of my guitar may not have been similar enough to an ES-335 to get that. I thought 335s and LPs had the same pickups but I could be wrong.

My guitar is fatter and more muscular than it used to be and while these are lower output than other DiMarzios, they are not low-output pickups. Although I lost some of the chimey sparkle of the stock pickups I was left with a well-defined top end with good note articulation. I've heard the les paul's top end sound described as "sugary sweet" which these have. The one thing that has prevented me from taking them right out and exchanging them for a set of Air Nortons is the sound of these pickups when split. In particular I like the split neck combined with the bridge humbucker- I get beef with some quack. And both pickups split together does have a bit of that 'in between' Knopfler tone and a lower output more in line with a single coil guitar. It is still is no replacement for my Tele but I never expected it to be.

Bottom line: If you have a LP-style guitar whose stock pickups leave you wanting I think you would be VERY happy with these, particularly when you compare the price of a set of Gibson Classic '57s. And if you make use of coil splitting I think you'd be extra happy.

That Ibanez got some new pickups: "FRED" at the bridge, "DP223 PAF" at the neck and the railin "Single Space, Double Coil, PAF Pro" in the center.

This was no ordinary Ibanez - it was a mint 555, made in Japan 1983. These axes went up in price! I could have sold it for 3x what I had once purchased in 83. Not after some top DiMarzio pickups and a little fancy wiring t, these long time proven pickups made me think entirely differently, maybe, I did something crazy.

I liked that guitar. We had fought 30 years of landing jets and making albums together. But so I just pulled the finish off of that body, made major improvements to the Floyd (zero point-which I love), reshaped the body, then designed, installed, and my now sell a very nice little damper for it.

Those pick-ups did more than make my guitar sound good, they created a whole new guitar!

          I recommend this pickup!

Comments about DiMarzio DP223 PAF Bridge Humbucker 36th Anniversary Electric Guitar Pickup:

This is an excellent choice for a bridge pick up. I paired this with the DP156 Humbucker From Hell in the neck and I am very pleased with the tone. The two compliment each other very well. When you split the coil, the single coil tone is clear and precise. And having said all that, it also distorts very smoothly.

I purchased the DP223 for my HSS Mexican Strat. It improved the tone quality 10 fold. It has even lows, mids, and highs. Every note in a chord is well defined. It took out the midrange snarl and muddy lows of the Mexican stock PU. Also works well for lead work. However this PU is a titch more high gain so I plug into the low gain input of my amp. This gives me killer distortion, and warm clean tones. I can play without an EQ now. I will purchace more of these for my other guitars

Comments about DiMarzio DP223 PAF Bridge Humbucker 36th Anniversary Electric Guitar Pickup:

I would like to state that I am not a fan of most Seymour Duncan pickups so if you love them my opinions may be non-useful. I have used the Dimarzio Air Classics for the last 10 years in all of my performing guitars and I REALLY love them. I got a 335 recently and thought I would give the 36th Aniversary pickups a shot. Unlike the Air Classics, the PAFs are a bit hot (even though the voltage ratings would suggest otherwise). This gives these a great drive and a monumental amount of dynamic range but while adjusting the volume control will obviously lower the gain, it does more to really lower the volume than the gain. These pickups are similar in their feel to a Duncan 59' with more mids but I still prefer the Air Classics. I would recomend them to a classic rocker but not a versatile union jobber.

Great pickup. I replaced the muddy EMGs in my ESP LTD Viper 301. The pickup opened up the guitar. Can't say enough good things about the sweet harmonics and note definition. Hit a power chord and each note rings out. The bottom end is tight, and the top end is sweet. If you're looking for a vintage PAF-style pickup that sounds awesome, look no further. I loved it so much, I replaced the harsh-sounding BurstBucker 3 in my LP with one.
