Comments about DiMarzio DP249 Area J Neck and Bridge Pickup Set:
These pickups are exactly what I was hoping for. They sound like single-coil J-bass pickups without the hum. I recorded some tracks with the stock Fender pickups and with the Area J pickups to compare the tone. I could not tell a difference between them.
These pickups have two coils placed side-by-side (like a P-bass) which eliminates the single-coil hum but retains the single-coil tone. Now that is a great feature!
DiMarzio pickups are generally well made. These pickups are no exception. They come with black mounting screws too.
The pickups sound great but are a lot cheaper than the competition. I have a set of Nordys in my 5-string, but the Area J sounds just as good for half the price.
Comments about DiMarzio DP249 Area J Neck and Bridge Pickup Set:
I bought a set of these to put into a SX Jazz style bass with a swamp ash body. I also replaced the bridge with a Gotoh 201 bridge. These two things turned a Chinese made bass into a really great sounding bass. I prefer the sound of this bass over my Fender Highway 1 Jazz bass. The tone can be mellow and warm when you roll back the volume on both pickups by 25% or so. The bridge pickup used by itself gives a nice growly sound while the neck pickup used by itself sounds very similar to a P-bass sound. With both pickups turned all the way up I get a really good sound through my GK MB115 and my Ampeg BA-115. It's the old school sound that you seem to hear on most recordings from the 70s. The sound seems well balanced across all strings. I can actually play without a compressor and get consistent sound that stays in the mix well when playing with the band. The other great thing about these is there is absolutely no noise. I will be buying DiMarzios for my Fender as well.
Comments about DiMarzio DP249 Area J Neck and Bridge Pickup Set:
I have a Fender Jaguar bass that came with Fender Vintage Jazz Bass pickups. I love the sound of those pickups but not the noise if I wanted to solo the neck or bridge pickup. After over a year with my bass, I started looking for noiseless pickups. I wanted the sound of the Vintage Jazz pickups but no noise which narrowed my choices since most replacement pickups tout more low end, high end, midrange, growl, etc... I like the concept of split coils (like a P Bass pickup in one straight line case) and the Area Js were supposed to be vintage sound and split coil. The Area Js are also 4 wire pickups allowing series, parallel, or single coil wiring. I installed mine using two 2P3T switches so I can select series/parallel/single wiring on each pickup (EA side is Red+ Black- and DG side is White+ Green-).Now the results: I love these pickups! They sound like the Fenders when wired in parallel (Red and White together as + and Black and Green together as -). In series (the method suggested by DiMarzio in the instructions: Red as +, Black and White together, and Green as -) they are louder, have more bass and midrange, and have less treble. They are not exactly like the Fenders. I can't put my finger on it, but I prefer the DiMarzios.
Comments about DiMarzio DP249 Area J Neck and Bridge Pickup Set:
These are some of the best pickups I've used in a long time. I'm normally used to using high end pickups such as Lindy Fralins and Nordstrand, but this time I didn't have that kind of budget. While I normally have a bias against DiMarzio (too modern sounding for my taste), but I thought I would give these a try after reading the description. These pickups have great warm sound with a lot of vintage growl. And best of all no noise what so ever. Whether you are using both pickups or soloing the bridge or neck pickup there is absolutely no noise. These are a direct replacement for American Fenders, and the newer Mexican Fenders (the bridge pickup is slightly longer than the neck). I'm so glad I took the chance on these pickups, I would buy them again in a heart beat.
