I was looking long and hard for that sparkling, glassy bell like tone you hear in a great Strat, like the intro to Where the Streets Have No Name by U2. The Sarium pickups (SCN) in my guitar did not have it. I tried Seymour Duncan's Vintage Rails and Lace Sensor Golds, they did not have it. Then I discovered Lincoln Brewster (great strat player) uses Area 58's in the neck and middle of his guitar (Area 61 in the bridge). Correction to the previous reviewer - he does not wire the middle to a tone pot, he keeps that wide open but neck and bridge are wired to tone controls. (I heard him say that live at a guitar clinic.) I put in a pair of Area 58's in the neck & mid & a 61 in the bridge. I had the tech wire a capacitor and resistor to the master volume so that I don't lose treble when I roll down the volume as Brewster does on his strat. I used Dimarzio 250k pots for both volume and tone. Now I have awesome vintage strat sound!!! My search is over. These pickups sound just like Dimarzio claims, maybe better! Superb vintage tone, sound like they come with their own reverb! Pristine, glassy sparkling strat tone!!! My guitar has come alive! If you are looking for that classic Strat tone Area 58's will deliver! You will not be dissapointed with these. Dead quite since they are humcanceling, but 100% pure vintage single coil tone. Dimazio nailed the vintage strat sound without the noise. These pickups sounds so awesome they'll may make you want to sit down and write a thank you note to Dimarzio.

I got these pickups for two reasons: I needed a solution for the awful noise of the stock pickups, and this, along with the Area '61, is what Lincoln Brewster plays in his Strats [and I love his tone]. I installed two of these babies in the neck and mid positions of my strat and I love them. The tone is not as twangy as the stock pickups, but definately still maintains that single coil strat sound.
As for noise, what noise? Gone. Just for fun I created one of the highest gain settings my amp has ever seen and started playing some old Metallica. The pickup noise was negligible, the hum was gone.
If you are looking for a single coil noise solution while keeping great tone this is it.
Coil Tap option is nice to have, I'll never use it but better to have and not need than need and not have.
The leads from the pickup are of a smaller gauge than the stock Fender pickups. This is just an observation and is neither pro nor con.

Comments about DiMarzio DP415 Area '58 Pickup:
I put this pickup in a Modern Player 3 pickup Telecaster with a DP417 Area T Tele Neck Pickup with Chrome Cover in the neck position and a DiMarzio DP153 Fred Humbucker in the bridge position. I was very pleased with the tonal range that gives me. These pickups have a greatFender tone. I also have one in the neck postition on a Strat which is also excellent.
Comments about DiMarzio DP415 Area '58 Pickup:
These are my favotire Strat pickups hands down. Well, two of them. Also like the area 61. No hum, not to basey, just enough thickness. Mr. Clean but can throw lots of distortion in there and rock like a champ. Even get it twangy enough for country.
Easy to install, covers are a bit of an odd size so if you want different colors than what's available you'll have to look around a bit. only reason I give it a 9/10. Wires are super thin.
Crazy awesome tone. Used them for years. Clean for those jazzy riffs and thick chords. I've got one in my neck position and another in the middle of my strat. Pair it with a area 61 in the bridge and you'll go crazy over your new tone.
I've paid this price several times and will pay it again for every strat I buy. Always the same awesome tone.
Comments about DiMarzio DP415 Area '58 Pickup:
Playing for over 20years and these pickups are the best I have ever played as replacements for single coils.
These pickups provide vintage single coil tones with no noise or hum. I have owned Fender Custom Shop Fat 50's and Texas Specials. I replaced my Fender Custom Shop Fat 50's in my Highway One strat for these and I noticed a big improvement in tone. Not to knock the Fat 50's, but they had too much bass to them which took away from the chime and woody tone I was looking for. The Area 58's have that chime but also can get texas bluesy as well if you keep the height close to the strings. I have an Area 61 in the Bridge which balances very well. All in all I am very satisfied and prefer these to the custom shop since they actually sound better and have no hum.
These sound like vintage coils!
Little pricey but worth it. They are also made in America which is a rare thing these days.

I bought two of these for my middle and neck. Middle is open. The sound is amazing. I would highly recommend this pickup. Nice clean tone and great tone with distortion.

Comments about DiMarzio DP415 Area '58 Pickup:
I put a 58 in the neck of a HSS strat (rosewood fretboard) with a 61 middle and an Air Zone in the bridge. At first, I was running stock 250k pots and it was a tad dark and muddy sounding...never really ventured into bright territory. I switched the volume pot to 500k and WOW! All the pickups came alive. Great range of warm vintage woody tones to warm bright tones with plenty of attack. I agree with others, pickup height can be key with these pickups....so you'll want to tinker a bit. The 58 handles overdrive very well without getting messy and has great harmonics. Dead quiet, affordable, great sounding, hard to go wrong here.
Comments about DiMarzio DP415 Area '58 Pickup:
These Area pickups are amazing! I reviewed the 61 earlier[my mid pickup]my 58 was purchased first though, and is in the neck. I wanted more time before giving a scond review, the more I play these the more I love them, and can't decide which selector position to use.Everything about these pups are fantastic. Again the tone is beautiful, but what really kicks, are the dynamics, I am rarely using my tone control because by simply changing picking styles and using the volume pot I get all the response I need. Great pups indeed!
Comments about DiMarzio DP415 Area '58 Pickup:
My favorite strat has a Dimarzio Heavy Blues 2 in the bridge position, which I discovered by accident while experimenting with different combos. I was looking for something to match up well in the neck and mid, the Area 58 was my choice. It has a similar sound to the Fender 57/62 pickup, but with no hum and a bit more output. Many seem to chase the SRV or Hendrix tone, but I wanted my own tone, which is a pickup that sounds great clean and sounds even better with overdrive for some heavy blues. This pickup does that perfectly. The key is to tinker with the pickup height until you get the sound you prefer. I also recommend 250k pots, much smoother in my opionion, although this is a matter of preference.
Comments about DiMarzio DP415 Area '58 Pickup:
This pickup is amazing, almost flawless. It is great clean, has a nice woody sounding overdrive and sings with almost supernatural beauty in ultra-high gain. It follows and responds with absolutely precision on the fastest licks. GET THIS PICKUPThat being said, it could have a little more "roll" in the neck.
Comments about DiMarzio DP415 Area '58 Pickup:
I love this pickup. I have been a long time strat player and recently picked up a steinberger spirit to travel with. I dropped the Area 58 in the middle of my H-S-H pup configuration and found the tone I love without the hum. Alone it is bright and quacky and a nice tight bottom. The pickup combines well with both neck and bridge pickups for an extremely versatile sound.
