Go clean or go crunchy, it all sounds good!

The DiMarzio DP420 Virtual Solo hum canceling pickup combines the best qualities of the Virtual Vintage Solo and Solo Pro pickups: high output and a full, warm sound. Then it pushes these qualities even further. Treble response is smoother, the lows are tighter, and there is more pick attack. Play hard, and the sound jumps out of the amp. Play softer, and the sound becomes cleaner and quieter. And of course, there's no hum.

    Recommended For: Bridge position.

Tech Talk: DiMarzio Virtual Vintage Solo and Solo Pro pickups both have specific qualities DiMarzio likes a lot, but they felt the sound could be even bigger. Making the highs both fatter and louder without any loss of definition on the lows creates a bridge pickup that can sound both warm and intense, and the Virtual Solo hum canceling pickup performs equally well with clean and heavily overdriven amps.

Comments about DiMarzio DP420 Virtual Solo Bridge Hum Canceling Strat Pickup:

I have this in the bridge of my Strat. It replaced a Fat 50's bridge. I was searching for a big sound out of my Strat and found a set of Virtual Vintage pickups used. This was the bridge model.

I've been very pleased with it, once I dialed in the wiring on my guitar. I ditched the Fralin Blend wiring I had before and went back to twin tone controls, one for the bridge, and one for the neck. I also played with tone capacitors.

Short story long, I ended up wiring a SuperSwitch and hardwiring the tone network on the bridge position only with a 33kOhm resistor and 0.0082uF (yeah, that's a small cap) capacitor in series to ground (shunt off the hot to the volume control). That was about '4' on my tone control, and I found myself always using that with the 0.0082uF cap to roll off a little high end.

I'm using 250K pots for volume and tone, 1Meg for the neck pickup tone. The SuperSwitch allows me to change the tone controls for each position. Along with a small toggle, I can have 0.0082uF or 0.018uF caps (normal is 0.022uF), or no tone control at all. This way, I can preset tone setups for each position. Bridge/middle I want nice and bright, so I can put the toggle in the middle and have no tone loading at all, then switch to the bridge pickup with its preset tone network. Perfect for me.

So with a little tweaking, I was able to balance this pickup with the others to get great tones in all positions. There's very little hum, and I can now use this guitar for all kinds of tones, which is great because the guitar itself is a beautifully set up American Deluxe Strat.

I use this through a fairly large pedal board into a Germanium Fuzz (Fulltone '69 clone), DOD EQ, Digitech Main Squeeze, Bad Monkey, MXR '78 Distortion, Ethos OD, Blackstar HT-5R, ModTone Mini Chorus, and TC iB Modified Nova Delay. The bridge position into the Fuzz then into the dirty channel of the Ethos is glorious with some added delay and reverb. Think Gilmour.

      SWEETEST SOUND ON A STRAT

      By Evan Lam

      from Brooklyn, NY

Comments about DiMarzio DP420 Virtual Solo Bridge Hum Canceling Strat Pickup:

I have a Dimarzio Virtual Vintage Solo DP404 in the bridge position of my Strat and from what I understand the Virtual Solo DP420 is the upgraded version of that pickup with more output. I had the Dimarzio HS series on my Strat before and they sounded sterile. With the Virtual my Strat sounds warm, thicker and has a nice crunch wih distortion for a single coil. I combined it with two Fender Noiseless in the neck and middle and the combination is not bad sounding at all. The Virtual is definitely worth considering when modifying your Strat.

      Great sounding pickup

Comments about DiMarzio DP420 Virtual Solo Bridge Hum Canceling Strat Pickup:

I have a Custom Shop Strat and placed this pickup in the bridge position. The key to the wide open sound it produces is changing the pots to 500K. You have to do it to get the gain out of the coils. But overall, a good investment. Match them with DP419's and same pots, and you'll be quite pleased, believe me. Lot of crunch and spectacular with a Dunlop wah. Very pleased here.
