I'm strictly an amateur musician and play around at recording/computer audio, etc. I have a Studio RTA Creation Station desk, and previously just placed my monitors on the top "bridge" of the desk. But I needed more room, so decided to get speaker stands. I considered various alternatives: 1. Engineering and building something from available materials, and plans from the web; 2. Metal stands (i.e., On-Stage Stands SMS-6000 Monitor Stands) 3. Wood stands.

After doing some basic engineering, I determined that the parts that I'd have to buy and then build wouldn't save that much money...and my engineering could be off, i.e., I didn't want to experiment with no real savings. So alternative 1 was off the table.

So I purchased On-Stage Stands SMS-6000 Monitor Stands. Pretty solid, but in a short time I determined that I wasn't satisfied with the stability of the narrow neck of the stand, and the base is actually quite large,so I dispensed with those .

Finally, I looked at the DRPRO SMS1BK Wood Studio Monitor Stand. Seemed solid and well priced. Bought them. They were well packaged and they took less than five minutes to actually assemble. My only criticism is that the neoprene/foam pad on the top of the stands could be a bit thicker and the full size of the top (it's about 1/4" thick, and about 1.5" smaller on all dimensions than the actual top of the stand). But that is easily remedied if necessary.

Recommendation on use...do as the instructions suggest and fill with sand during the construction process. Adds amazing stability, and further dampening . Go to a local home center and get SILICA SAND...very fine, goes right in and stays dry (just don't breathe its dust). I first tried using "play" sand, but it came out of the bag wet.

Finally, I placed the speakers on the stands. WHAT A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN SOUND! While that wasn't my objective (i.e., improving the sound), having my monitors (KRK Rokit5)on these sand-filled rock-stable stands is the best change in my sound/production system I've ever made! And it freed up much needed space on my desk. Wish I had gotten these earlier!

Unfortunately it seems that you get what you pay for with these stands. As I was assembling the first pair, I found that the drilled holes were unaligned on one of the legs, making it impossible to assemble the item. Musician's Friend was very quick and responsive (5 stars to them and their team for the wonderful service btw) in sending me a 2nd pair. Unfortunately the 2nd pair had similar issues - the plate on which the monitor sits on was flimsy and so I ended up returning the item. If you order a pair of these, save yourself some time by thoroughly inspecting the item for defects first before assembling!

Decent Monitor Stands

Comments about DR Pro DRPRO SMS1BK Wood Studio Monitor Stand (Pair):

Overall, these are bargain-priced, yet sturdy monitor stands that will hold just about any prosumer to pro level monitor with up to 8" woofers. If you're buying or have larger or ultra high end reference monitors, you may want to invest in larger speaker stands to keep your monitors safe.
These are monitor stands. Their feature is holding monitors. The do this adequately and even when not filled with sand, they seem sturdy and unlikely to tip over.
I'm dropping the rating a couple notches due to my stands having a few small chips and dings, but I attribute that more to shipping damage than subpar quality. Still, denser wood or pressboard wouldn't chip this easily. Overall, they look great.
These are an outstanding value. Some monitors stands are two to three more times expensive, but these do the job I need. I may even get a second paid for my A+B mix monitors.

Comments about DR Pro DRPRO SMS1BK Wood Studio Monitor Stand (Pair):

These stands are great given the price, but that's not to say they don't have their issues.

Construction: The stand consists of 2 wooden boards held together by a small solid compressed wooden center. 2 plastic fill tubes fill the gaps on either side of the solid center piece in between the boards (I should have taken a picture)... basically if you're looking at the front or back, you see the plastic fill tubes, if you're looking at either side, you're looking at the wooden boards.

The top and bottom of the stands screw into the plastic fill tubes... I was a little disappointed with this design aspect, but it does feel quite solid.

I highly suggest filling these stands. They feel considerably more solid filled. My beef here is that the fill holes are extremely small! I couldn't find a funnel that actually fit in them. I had to physically hold the smallest funnel I could find on the hole while filling it, which I feel is notable, but not a big deal either. IMPORTANT: you must use a fill material that will not clump because the fill holes are so small. I suggest pool sandfilter sand. You can find it at any pool store, or even Home Depot (in the pool supply section, not the building materials!) for a 50lb bag for about the price of a burger at Five Guys... unfortunately, you probably only need about a quarter of that!

I'm also not impressed with either of the feet options included... I won't be using them.

All that said, I'm not unhappy with the purchase... they hold my monitors well and they look nice. I would expect them to last a long time in a stationary situation, which I'm sure applies to most potential buyers; however, I wouldn't expect them to last nearly as long for those who would subject them to any kind of road applications.

Nice stands, time-consuming assembly

By liteman11

Pros

  • Function Well
  • Look Good
  • Priced right

Cons

  • Need Tiny Funnel
  • Small Holes For Filling

Best Uses

Comments about DR Pro DRPRO SMS1BK Wood Studio Monitor Stand (Pair):

These stands look and function as advertised. Assembly is easy, but the only hard part is filling them with sand. I ended up using Johnny Cat cat litter, because it doesn't stick together and pours well. It takes about 8 lb. of a 10 lb. bag to fill the four holes (two for each stand) up to capacity. The fill holes are tiny, so you need to find the smallest funnel you can find from a paint store or department. It won't fit inside the hole, but it fits around it close enough to pour into the hole. Fill very slowly or else the sand backs up quickly and logjams. Assembly is fairly easy except for the filling with sand, which will take darn near an hour. But filling the holes is worth it to achieve best stability. Also, make sure you keep tightening the allen screws as you go, because they loosen up as they settle. All and all, for the price I would say these stands are well worth it, and they get your speakers to the optimum height for listening. 100% improvement over having your speakers on the floor.

Comments about DR Pro DRPRO SMS1BK Wood Studio Monitor Stand (Pair):

I read a few of the negative reviews before I made this purchase, and I confess, they had me a bit nervous. Once the stands arrived I was greatly relieved and very pleased. The assembly was a piece of cake, and the stands look amazing. More importantly, they are very sturdy and functional. The only thing that kept me from giving this product 5 stars was the packaging. The actual product packaging was great (thankfully), however the packaging from MF was awful, I had several items all just thrown into a big box with a little bit of brown paper to cushion them. The box was beat up pretty good (crushed and holes) and the UPS guy said the product might be damaged. Ugh. But again, the product packaging was so good that it protected the stands well. I would highly recommend these stands.
