So far I like them; they're not the ultimate string but they're really good strings and have more of a vanity appeal than anything else.
Overall good strings, decent life...they look REALLY COOL. They don't have that weird slimey feeling that you get with most coated strings.
Last quite a while and the coating stays put on the strings (doesn't flake off like the neon strings that are just painted)
They're a little pricey, I'm on my 3rd set and I'm trying to decide whether the slight extension on string life (and again the super groovey appearence) is worth shelling out the extra money. I definately got more life out of the elixirs.

I've been trying to figure out why everyone is so keen to these strings...I've tried several sets of High Beems, Low Riders, and now I tried 3 different sets of the coated strings, 2 peacock blues and this set of Black Beauties. 1 out of the 3 sets is a good set, the other 2 died in the first 10 days of use. The other is just now going dead after about a month. I play about 2 times a week I have 9 basses so they don't get played 24/7 or even every week. The black set were the worst. I've always played DM Blue Steel's and that's what I'm going back to. The DR Blacks get a sticky film on them and I have even tried to clean it off to no avail. Don't waste your money on these. I've been playing 30 years and I can tell you "Handmade" is not always a good thing especially with strings. You never know what your going to get!

Comments about DR Strings Black Beauties Medium 5-String Bass Strings:

These things last much longer than people give them credit for. I try to replace strings every month when I do recordings, but for live performances and practice, these things keep their tone forever, and it is AWESOME tone.

The fall in just the right place between high end snappiness, and rib cage rattling lows. They also feel slightly more slick than standard roundwounds, so your hands glide across the strings nicely.

These are a mainstay for me!

Comments about DR Strings Black Beauties Medium 5-String Bass Strings:

I play nylon flat wounds wanted to give these a try. you do still feel the steel strings underneath the coating can't play them as long as I do actual nylons without feeling it in my fingers.
only had them a short while and still getting use to how they play. I play them on a custom hand carved 5 string frettless Bass with a warmouth custom neck, they sound great so far not sure how long they will last.

I need at least two more sets of these for my other basses.

Comments about DR Strings Black Beauties Medium 5-String Bass Strings:

I love these strings! Initially they look great on my bass, but who cares how they look if they didn't sound even better, well they do. And they feel like butter to the touch, highly responsive to variations in finger pressure and styles of playing with a rich sustaining tone, that make me want to play as much and as often as possible.

          Not Even Close to Elixir's

Comments about DR Strings Black Beauties Medium 5-String Bass Strings:

I'm a very active musician gigging regularly 3+ times a week and I always go for Elixir strings due to reliability, long lasting (just replaced now after a year) and pretty good sound.
There were no Elixir's available at my local store so all they got was these black beauties. So far, these are the worst strings I've ever played! Only lasted for 3 days! Dead sound with also several "fret marks" on the G string due to the color feature which looks ugly.
If you are into coated strings because you can't afford replacing bass strings all the time, please do yourself a favor and get the Elixir's nanoweb! Done!

I loved it the moment I put them on. They're very clear and they produce a great to. Although I recommend using string lubricant to get a better feel after couple of uses. But overall, I still love them!

            Cool Look

Comments about DR Strings Black Beauties Medium 5-String Bass Strings:

I've read people disliking the fact the color is pilling off after a few plays... If you use a guitar pick don't cry asking why the black coating is getting off. They're a little pricy but if you wanna look cool, you gotta pay the price. Randy Armstrong from R3D uses the red devils on his 5 string Peavey Cirrus, they just don't look awesome but the bass looks beautiful (being a 100% black bass, including the neck) and they sound great. I'm expecting my brand new bass to come next week from my personal luthier's shop, a 5 string Pavel J Pro Bass and can't wait to try this beauties on my beast. If you play finger style, you'll find no problem with the color getting off the string, anyway, I've learned to change strings at least once a month or every two months (to avoid bad sound and to keep a straight neck all the time)
These babies look really cool. A friend of mine just installed these on a MM J Bass and they look awesome. It's also cool they're coated...
I tried them on a J Bass before and they felt fantastic...
Unfortunately they are way too expensive, maybe because of the color or because they're hand made, the price doesn't help with the competition...

Comments about DR Strings Black Beauties Medium 5-String Bass Strings:

I got these few days ago to replace my default/ stock strings of my affinity p bass. let alone the black strings, which look amazing on my black and white p bass, its tones are actually more expressive than I've expected. I think that every one is ought to try these once in his life time before determining what strings to stick with.
