OVERVIEW

K3T Black Beauties coated electric guitar strings on hexagonal core.

DRs EXTRA-Life Black Beauties offer guitar players a superior black coated string without sacrificing the crisp tone, clarity, and volume of traditional DR HandMade Strings. EXTRA-Life is a super thin advanced .0003" coating on the plain electric guitar strings and on the wrap wire for added protection.

DR's remarkable, and proprietary, patent pending K3T Technology Coating is the first coating that makes no apologies and no excuses. Players say these strings have less unwanted overtones, more volume, great clarity and articulation than standard uncoated strings. Yet, they provide the same protection against corrosion due to humidity and perspiration as well as the increased tonal life coated strings have come to be known for.

Gauges 11-14-18-28-38--50.

I play in D standard, and have been at it for 23 years. I've tried all brands and gauges, but these stick out as one of my top five favorites, and I came across them by accident. I wanted to buy a set of 11-50 DR TiteFits and accidentally bought these. When i got home I looked at the pack, realized I got the wrong pack and thought, "Black coated strings?! What a gimmick." Still I figured, why not try them out. Was I glad I did. Heavy and thick for melodic riffs and chords. Brights are crisp and clear. Smooth on the fingers and fretboard. I have a black guitar so they look fantastic as well. One thing, the part of the string that is picked fades after awhile, but it is no different than what happens to nickel plated strings. I waited months to write this review as part of the selling point is extra life-durability, and they deilver. They've lasted longer than any string I've had and have never broke one. Don't be scared away by the coating, colour or cost. I used to be one of those guys that said he'd never play on coated strings, but that was before I tried them. Better than any nickel plated string I've played.

A year ago, I bought a bunch of these colored strings...'cause hey- they look cool! I just found another set from a year ago and it made me remember why I don't have ANY of these on my guitars any more- these things are crap. Maybe it's just because I use locking tuners, but I have yet to put a set of these colored strings on to an axe and not have at least one of them break while tuning up (usually at the tuner). These are the worst strings I have ever encountered and I strongly suggest you buy just regular strings- of if you're into the 'coated' thing- buy elixirs- never had a problem with those. DR strings (at least the colored ones, they're the only one's I've tried) are the absolute worst strings I have ever attempted using in my career as a musician. You can try them if you don't believe me, but in the end, you'll just be mad that you dropped a ton of extra cash for a string that breaks easier than a wet tissue. Get something else guys.

coated strings do not effect tone or sound

By stratosaurus

Comments about DR Strings Extra Life BKE-11 Black Beauties Heavy Coated Electric Guitar Strings:

I continue to use these strings and I am delighted the set I use has had a big price drop. I plan to pick up a bunch of these right before xmas before they go back up. I use the 11-50 gauge as I play a full step detuned and this gauge is perfect for me. NO difference in tone as coating DOES NOT effect tone it is not magnetic just as pickup covers do not alter tone. I have noticed sometimes the DRs will break on my locking Spertzel tuners so I use a different technique to feed the string in, giving it a half turn more start than usual and all is fine. Not sure why they do this but it is not the coating and DRs are great strings. I had D'Addario's break on me worse and I did not like the sound as much. DRs are great and I dig the feel, looks and quality of the coating. Some sets I have played well over 6 times with no loss of coating, I think this is pretty much a variable thing from set to set. It does not effect the tone or playability. It can wear off some due to picking but I have not seen any loss on the frets. Black Beauties have become my standard set.

Best string for my choice

By stratosaurus

Comments about DR Strings Extra Life BKE-11 Black Beauties Heavy Coated Electric Guitar Strings:

I really like this and they look really cool against my maple strat or my ebony neck strat. Sound is great and unlike a lot of others I have played on my first set perhaps a half dozen times and I am not seeing the coating wear off as some state. There are perhaps a couple small spots where the coating is missing but hardly noticable. Smoother to the touch, less fret wear and using a high end board and half stack my tones are as good or better than they have ever been. I dig these and plan to make them my std on acooustic as well. Getting rid of that squeek on acoustic (even using finger ease) might make me play it a little more. The same size acoustic strings are a lot cheaper, they always raise the price when things get popular. DR I think makes the best strings going, handmade and the coating is done before wrap.

Comments about DR Strings Extra Life BKE-11 Black Beauties Heavy Coated Electric Guitar Strings:

A short time ago I bought a couple sets of these strings. When I received them, I eagerly put the on my guitar. I go through strings fairly quickly and I like to experiment with there sound. These are undoubtedly the best sounding strings I've tried. The only negative of the stings is that where you pick begins to wear off.

Best strings I've used so far.

Comments about DR Strings Extra Life BKE-11 Black Beauties Heavy Coated Electric Guitar Strings:

I'm still a fairly fresh player, but of all the strings I've toyed with since I started, these are my favorite. On my ESP LTD MV-100, I can play as low as dropped C tuning with minimal loss of tension. While the coating did wear thin early into playing on them, the tone and the durability have not been hindered thus far.Great strings!

BLACK BEAUTIES

By Mike Heinz

from Wrentham, MA

Comments about DR Strings Extra Life BKE-11 Black Beauties Heavy Coated Electric Guitar Strings:

I got these things a couple days ago, so they are still crisp and sounding beautifully. perfect for any music, the with the gauge, they're made for metal. Hooked these things up to my floyd and i have to say, black DOES go well with chrome. The only thing about these strings is that the coated finish wears off where you pick, but if you're on stage, who's really gonna notice anyways... ;)

Comments about DR Strings Extra Life BKE-11 Black Beauties Heavy Coated Electric Guitar Strings:

I really like the black strings they look cool against a black pickguard and an ebony neck. However, all that is meaningless if they sound like s*%$t. These strings sound nice and mellow, but good rock strings. I really like the tone.I'd keep buying them.
