This is the only drum tuner that I've owned, and it does what I expected. Obviously, it isn't hearing frequencies, but testing tensions, so it will never get the drum as in tune as the ear will. The major issue, I find, is that after getting all of the lugs to matching tensions with the DrumDial, they will not be in tune when played. A pair of lugs across from each other will always produce a higher or lower pitch than the others. I always have to do a bit of tuning afterwards. I tend to use the product to get my drums in a ballpark range of where I want them, which comes in especially useful when switching between genres that demand higher or lower tunings.
It works great to quickly tune a drum to a certain pitch, but without a good ear to do fine tuning, the DrumDial will leave you with drums that don't sound as good as they could.

worth its weight in gold

Comments about DrumDial Drum Tuner:

've been drumming and tuning by ear for 30+ years. This thing really works! you have to set up a head correctly - seat it properly and give each lug screw a half-turn or two using the traditional radial pattern. Then go around to each lug clockwise, using the dial making SMALL adjustments until each one reads excatly the same. Once you get the head at equal tension, you should have a well defined tone, and can go up or down from there based on personal preference. This process has taken the 'magick' out of getting just the right tone and pitch out of my drum. I really can't say enough about its impact on how my drums are sounding and thus how I'm playing them as well.
Nothing fancy - well put together tension dial that is easy to read. Has a few slideable reference marks. comes in a decent cardboard box with foam - would recommend finding a nice wooden box or similar to keep it safe.
Built with solid, heavy feeling metals. Spring loaded tension gague and rotary dial are well put together, but should be handled carefully.
Worth its weight in gold. you will get longer life out of your heads by using this tool and maintaining even pressures.

    Comments about DrumDial Drum Tuner:

the product is great. built solid, and helps give you reference in tuning your drums. the first one i received was massively scratched in the back. the sticker in the front had nicks in it. and the box had someone's name and tax ID number from where it was shipped before i got it. so it was sold to at least one person, then resold to me as new. i returned it for exchange and the next one is also scratched in the back (it's very hard metal so it's not easy to scratch it must have really been tossed around a box of nails) and it also has a "former customer sticker" on the box, only this time they removed 95% of the sticker so i can't read the name of the person that had it before me. also, the cover protecting the dial was off I swear on my life (it's unbelievable i know). i put it back on. it didn't pop into place, i know i can remove it again with something sticky to pull it off. i'm not sure what the deal is here but the product seems to work well and is made very solid so whatever i'm just going to keep this, but i don't think it's right MF seems to sell used ones as new that's just wrong. the fact that it's happened twice out of 2 sales really removes the isolated incident scenario i was hoping for

just got this thing in the mail a couple hours ago and tuned up. my kit sounds 100% better. it would have taken hours and hours to try to tune the drums by ear, and would not have even come close to the precision that this device gives you. if youre patient, and make sure the head was set properly to begin with, using the drumdial will be very easy.

            Comments about DrumDial Drum Tuner:

I have been playing drums for over 40 years, starting in grade school and continuing today..

I bought one of these because I thought the concept was awesome, and as I found out, it was. I was shocked how close my drums were tuned already, without the use of the DrumDial, but being able to check my ear was invaluable, plus it makes it a no-brainer to tune your drums. Once you determine the sound you are looking for, all you have to do is set each lug at the same tympanic pressure, and you are done.. The odd thing I learned is that all the drums are basically tuned to the same pressure, and the size of the head is what gives you the fundamental pitch. The snare is necessarily tuned with a little more pressure, and the bass drum with a little less, but the toms, with the same reading on each drum, gives them the perfect relative pitch, one to another.

If you want your drums to sound their best and don't want to take a bunch of time tuning, this little item is a must have item. I remember an older tuning device I once owned which did basically the same thing, but it worked only if the tension rods were all equally oiled, or had the same resistance..This device measures the tension of the head at each tension rod...Get one...you'll wonder how you tuned your drums before you owned the DrumDial.

                Comments about DrumDial Drum Tuner:

after looking at this thing in catalogs through out the years its been available, i finally decided to get one for myself and i couldn't be happier. took my drums apart, and set them on a table ( necessary to keep them level, you can't do this while the kit is set) you simply lay the gauge next to a tuning lug and it gives you an instant reading. it takes a bit of practice to tune the drum evenly because when you find a lug that needs a bit more turning...it will throw the one next to it a bit off. you simply have to go back and forth a bit, and make sure to do opposite lugs at a time to ensure the skin gets stretched evenly. the instructions say to tune snare drums to around 85 or so....i like mine a bit tighter so i did 89. the instructions also say to tune rack toms to 75 or so...i found this setting perfect for everything except my 12" tom, it was just too loose and low. no problem, i simply tuned it up a quarter turn on each lug and that was it.

the gauge is fairly heavy and very well made, although, i would be worried about dropping this on the ground or a concrete floor.

if you are having trouble tuning your drums, or if you want to make it easier, i would highly recommend this product.

                Comments about DrumDial Drum Tuner:

Love this little product. Read the instructions and don't expect everything to just happen automatically, tuning still takes practice.
I thought it wouldn't make much of a difference, but the Drumdial really improves the sound of the drums. Tuning now takes minutes instead of hours. I really recommend this product.
Well built, looks and feels like it's tough.
It's pretty pricy ( for it's size it looks like it), but well worth it.

                Comments about DrumDial Drum Tuner:

I have been a drummer for a long time and have always made sure to tune my drums and keep them sounding as good as can be. The drum dial allows me to do what used to take hours and do it in 20 minutes or so. I am also a recording engineer, and using this makes tuning a clients drums fast and efficient before a tracking session.
Moveable bezel with a lock is awesome, easy to calibrate using a piece of glass and the bezel.
                Heavy, well made. Precise tool.
Great value. For the price it is indespensible.

                Drum Dial Review

                By Nathaniel Marchbanks

                from Austin, Texas

                Comments about DrumDial Drum Tuner:

Like most of the folks here, high marks for the Drum Dial. That said, you have to know how to use it. Spend some time testing out the various tuning settings prescribed in the ranges listed in the accompanied documentation. Start in the middle of the range. Does it sound like you imagined your drums should sound? If the sound is too high, go to the bottom of the range. Too low, to the upper end of the range. Repeat as necessary until you find the sweet spot. The drum dial is great at giving you the tension of your drum head at a specific lug. Theres no guarantee that specific tension is going to ensure a consistent tone at each lugbut its going to get you real close, and that, to me, is the worth of the drum dial. Once you have relatively consistent numbers across all the lugs, the fine tuning is up to your ears.
Very well built product, maybe even overbuilt. As an additional bonus, the cardboard case and foam lining should protect it for years.
For me, the value is a 10. With some head/drum combinations, Id nail it; with others, I could never find a pleasing tone. With the Drum Dial, I can document exactly what tensions get me close to the desired tone for a particular head/drum combo, and I can repeat it time after time. If I move to a lighter-weight head combination, I have a relative value as a starting point, which to me is the value of the product.

It is very nice to have all the drums tuned to the same tension, and know that it is correct. I would recommend this product to any one who wants to get the most out of their kit.
