Elixir

Combat finger grunge!

Gauges: 12-16-24-32-42-53.

Elixir Acoustic Guitar Strings are covered with an ultrathin, space-age polymer tube that contacts the string on the tops of the windings only. This leaves the all-important winding-to-winding-to-core space free from the fear of the enemies of tone!

Elixir Nanoweb coating permits acoustic guitar strings with the feel, bright tone, and punch of traditional strings. Elixirs are the first major innovation in guitar strings in over forty years and they deliver what they promise: great tone and long life no matter what you put them on or how often you play.

Most players report that Elixir Strings keep sounding great 3 to 5 times longer than ordinary strings.

I have been using Elixirs for over a decade. They sound great and last much longer than non-coated strings. They came on my first Taylor guitar, and I have used them exclusively ever since. I play professionally and have used Elixirs on Taylor, Martin, Ovation and Yamaha guitars -- without ever having a string break. I really think that the breakage problems that have been mentioned are primarily due to the playing technique, stringing technique, and/or the guitar.

If you are experiencing breakage problems, I recommend having a guitar tech look at your guitar and check the saddle and nut for any sharp places or burrs that might be causing the breakage. If you are a heavy strummer, I suggest using a heavier gauge string. If you are tuning the guitar higher than 440, the strings will be more susceptible to breaking, due to the higher tension. Lastly, and this one may seem a bit strange, but you could try using a "lighter" gauge string, as well. One well know artist (don't recall his name) stated in a forum that he often broke strings until a friend suggested using a lighter gauge. That solved the problem!

I own 5 Taylors. 914CE, 816CE, W65CE, 420 and a Baby. Since all except the 420 (purchased in 1993) came with Nanoweb Elixirs I was spoiled rotten with the tone. I've had a love affair with Elixir Strings for years. I love these strings ... don't get me wrong. Since day one, I've broken them. On the 914CE, which uses Light Gauge, the G-String would snap at the bridge. I always thought it was me. I tried using fine sandpaper to smooth out any rough spots on the bridge with no luck. So, I'm replacing these strings at a set a week. It drove me crazy to be at a gig and not concentrate on my playing 100% because a string might snap. People I played with had a running bet which song I'd break a string on. So I bought the 816CE which uses Medium Gauge to be a "go to" guitar if I snap a string on the 914CE. Guess what happens now? Yep ... the 816CE starts breaking the Nanoweb Elixirs. This time, it's the D String at the nut. I'm ready to cry now. The W65CE broke strings too but being a 12 string it didn't concern me much because I only used it on 3 or 4 songs. I play hard. I get emotional with playing and that translates into hard picking, for some reason. 3 months ago, I got so disgusted, I tried some D'Adarrio EXP Phosphor Bronze. Guess what? No breakage even with me playing hard, on purpose, trying to break them. The D'Adarrios don't break. I put another set of Elixirs on the 914CE and broke a D-string this time ... at the bridge. The D'Adarrios don't have that Elixir "sound" that I have been addicted to but they sound nice and most importantly ...THEY DON'T BREAK. The D'Adarrios lose that "zing" quicker. They deaden in about a week. Elixir ... please ... I beg of you ... fix the problem. I want to come back. I love you ... I just can't trust you.

weekend and I play them hard (12-53's)
They hold up well on my Taylor and Martin.

Comments about Elixir Light Nanoweb Acoustic Guitar Strings:

Great strings, and they are the original ones that came with my Taylor 314CE. I've been using them for years, and have had long periods where I haven't used them. Gave me perspective.

Tone-wise, I'd say non-coated strings have a slightly better sound on the first day they're installed, but the tone changes so quickly compared to these strings. The benefits of these particular coated strings far outweight the cons. Keep in mind the nanoweb coating is so thing that you won't feel it. You will notice they feel more slick than regular strings, but you won't even see the coating till it starts to age.

These last me about a month on regular use, 3 when played occasionally. Your mileage will vary.

While in India, I couldn't get these on the regular. For a few years I got used to using D'Addarios. Now I can get these online for a lot less than I do in stores, and musiciansfriend offers great deals every now and then. Stores half the time never have the gauges I need (which are the regular 12-53 ones anyway). Have myself a year's supply now, sealed up in ziplock bags with silicone gel packets.

Using a string cleaner like GHS Fastfret helps get the most out of your string life and tone. The combination makes it easy for me to play for hours, slide up and down with chords and leads, and protects my fingertips.

My favorite strings. Ideal for both the guitars I use daily and for my less often used collection. They really do hold up for months and personally, I love their sound. Now if they can only bring the price down to a few pesos more than standard strings, instead of more than double, they'd corner the market.

I put a brand new set on and the B string broke off inside the tuning peg. I got to use them only one day and I was disappointed in the tone quality. It had a very metallic ring. I think I will be returning to the Earth Tones.

For over a decade, these have been my go-to strings. I've tried others on occasion, and I was never satisfied with the tone, feel or lifespan of other strings. Additionally, my sister has been a gigging musicial for over 10 years, and these are the only acoustic strings she uses as well.
