OVERVIEW

Steel on the inside, space-age polymer on the outside!

Gauges 13-17-26-35-45-56.

Elixirs are the first major innovation in guitar strings in over forty years, and they deliver what they promise: great tone and long life no matter what you put them on or how often you play.

Elixir Acoustic Guitar Strings are covered with an ultrathin, space-age polymer tube that contacts the string on the tops of the windings only. This leaves the all-important winding-to-winding-to-core space free from the fear of the enemies of tone!

Most players report that Elixir Strings keep sounding great 3 to 5 times longer than ordinary strings.

I recently wrote a review on elixir strings that was inaccurate and unfair to the elixir manufacturer. My review was titled "Long lasting, I think not!" in which I stated that I was constantly breaking strings of various guages. It turns out that the grover machine heads on my Guild JF-30 were in need of replacement and it was not the strings at all. I have since been playing on the same set of elixir's since changing my machine heads 4 months ago and they still sound fresh and new! I truly believed at the time it was the strings but I was mistaken and would like to make things right and apologize to all musicians that my review steered wrong as well as the manufacturer who possibly lost business to my flawed review. My previous review should have been titled "Long Lasting, Definitely!"

I've got a new slogan for Elixir.LONG LASTING TONE ON NON-LASTING STRINGS!I bought a medium set of Nanos for my acoustic to check out the hype. First thing I noticed, was the greasy feel. While it makes for good sliding, it also makes for bad bending and I personally don't like it. They did retain their new 80/20 snap for almost a week instead of the few hours of plain bronze strings. They have a great bright and chimey sound, but because of the coating, you have to pick hard to unearth it, otherwise you sound like strings dipped in candle wax. Which leads me to the problem - if you pick hard, your gonna break them. I did not stretch them after putting them on and let them settle naturally. Still, before two weeks had passed, I had broken the g and d strings. What's the point in making strings with long lasting tone, when the strings themselves don't last?! Medium strings should handle enthusiastic picking. I know the fault is not in me or my guitar, because I have never broken a D'Addario string, so it's possible to make them strong. I'm not entirely happy with the sound of D'Addario EXPs though, bad note separation and weak bass, so I began experimenting. I will never buy Elixir again. Dean Markley Alchemy range will be the next thing I'll try.

Comments about Elixir Medium Polyweb Acoustic Guitar Strings:

I recently purchased a new Martin DCPA3 and I loved the tone. When it came time to change the strings I got a set of PolyWebs out of my other guitar case and slapped them on. The PolyWebs are soooo much better. That squeeky treble and funky high mid ring is gone. The Martin came new with Life Spans on it and sounded great but these Polys made my Martin sound more vintage and seasoned even though It's a brand new guitar. These PolyWeb strings dont have the high end treble of the LifeSpans but the mid is a lot smoother and the bottom is bigger but not dead or boomy. They give my guitar a sweet and perfectly Balanced tone over all playing styles where really bright strings are only good in 1 style. Overall the Balance of the PolyWeb is super nice and the string squeeks are gone which is good in the studio. Plus they last 3 times as long as other strings so dont worry about the higher cost because its like buying 3 sets for 1. Get a set and play them for a while and you'll be hooked. They are that great. Also I recomend the Poly over the Nano hands down so dont even waist your time, PolyWeb all the way.

I read about some other reviewers breaking the E and G strings. I have never had this problem. In fact I cannot remember the last time that I broke a string.
I perfer the Elixers over Martin's Lifespan. The Elixers give my D 28 Martin the sound that I want plus they last for a long time.

So, I don't believe these strings are as good as D'Addario. I don't hate them either. My local guitar shop, and Musician's friend were out of D'Addario. For Electric, Elixer is the way to go, but for acoustic... it just isn't quite as good in my opinion. However, they do work, I do appreciate the workmanship, but I feel they lack an edge that D'Addario gives you.

Comments about Elixir Medium Polyweb Acoustic Guitar Strings:

I've used Elixirs ever since they were invented and run them on my Martin HD-28V and Taylor GS-8. On both instruments I get exactly the sound I like. Before Elixirs, I had a job playing outside at an amusement park 4 hours a day (8 hour day, hour on, hour off) and I was changing strings every 2-3 days. After Elixirs came along, I was changing every 3 weeks to a month, plus, I was getting a better sound. Another reviewer mentioned breaking a lot of them. I also had that problem, always breaking Gs and Ds at the saddle. I took my guitar to a good luthier and he filed off the saddle ever so slightly and the problem was solved. I prefer the polyweb over the nanoweb for the feel and lack of squeaks. As a bonus, after you've played them awhile, you learn to tell by looking (the coating coming off a certain way) when they'll be going bad. I know when I'm about to need a string change instead of showing up at a gig and pulling out a guitar (or mandolin) with dead strings. Some folks say they don't like the sound, but that's just personal preference. I prefer the sound of Elixirs and I've tried pretty much every brand out there in the past 45 years. I always come back to my Elixirs.

Comments about Elixir Medium Polyweb Acoustic Guitar Strings:

I bought a Taylor Grand Auditorium 414CE. It originally came with Elixir light gauge strings and I decided to buy a pack of medium gauge just to try them when the originals got old and compare the sound. I hadn't had the guitar even a month (and it was new out of the box) and the strings on the guitar started to peel and one snapped, so I decided to replace all the strings with medium gauge Elixirs. The SAME thing happened within 2 weeks of having replaced the strings.
Even if they didn't peel (I use a pick a lot), the sound is very dull on the bass.
The 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th strings start to peel within days. Terrible.
                            Way overpriced.
