Comments about EMG 89XR Dual-Mode Humbucker Repositioned-Coil Guitar Pickup:
Sounds Great. Dropped it in the neck of one of my Les Paul Supreme's. I used it in conjunction with an 81TWX. So cool. You can get so many sounds out of your guitar. Sounds similar to an 85 in the neck position. Fat bottom end. Single coil mode rocks. I don't regret this purchase at all.
Comments about EMG 89XR Dual-Mode Humbucker Repositioned-Coil Guitar Pickup:
All-in-all they're decent pickups and the X-series do have a more organic sound with more dynamic control and the clarity is top-notch.
As humbuckers they sound good, as singles kind of dull and very much NOT strat like. I may just switch these out for 81/85 or even 85/60 combo and get the RPC control if I want more single-coil like sound.
I like that EMG provides all the parts you need for this system. I don't like that with these dual-mode pickups you can't have 2 connected to 1 push-pull pot. On the plus side, the solderless system took out half the work for me (though I still had to do some soldering). Be forwarned though, look at the control cavity and wiring in your guitar and determine what obstacles you may have to overcome. In my case I had to cut the output connectors off one end and feed them through a small hole to the jack, and then solder them.
Overall the quality of the pickups and the electronics is very good. I have to give them a ding on this one though because I seem to have gotten a bad pickup that slipped past their QC. When I put it in Single-Coil mode, it generated this tone that made the pickup unusable. Good news is I was able to exchange it.
With distortion on these pickups get very good articulation. Notes are very clear, especially on chords. And single note leads are very punchy and in-your-face. I think these would cut through the mix very nicely. The X-series definitely have more dynamic range and control as well, so you can pick lightly or heavily and notice a huge difference in sound.
As humbuckers they're great, but as single coils they lack the chimey/clacky highs that the real SA's get. EMG claims that they sound similar to SA's, but they don't. That said, the tone isn't bad, just not what I was expecting.
Comments about EMG 89XR Dual-Mode Humbucker Repositioned-Coil Guitar Pickup:
if you are looking for an EMG 85 sound but can spare a few dollars more - get this one! recommended for people who have les paul but want something more than the Zack Wylde sound. I won't recommend installing it on a Gibson SG because the space wont fit, especially the battery. my advise: 1. KNOW YOUR ELECTRONICS and 2. NO NEED TO PUT IN THE GROUND WIRE and 3. MAKE SURE THE BACK OF THE PICKUPS HAVE THE RED POWER AT THE RIGHTMOST SIDE SO IT DOESN'T GO DEAD WHEN YOU PLUG IT IN its a pain to hook everything up then plug it in your amp then get dead air when you push your cable all the way - you would know it is reversed when you plug your guitar cable halfway and it plays (i hear "ughh"). I recommend this one with either the 81X or the 81TWX but better with the 81 TWX to get versatile sound.
