Instantly switches from the clarity of a single-coil to the fatness of a humbucker!

Inside the EMG-89 guitar pickup are both single and dual-coil pickups, each with its own output. The single-coil mode is an Alnico-loaded stacked EMG-SA. The dual-coil mode consists of two Alnico-loaded coils opposite one another, creating a pickup similar to the EMG-85. A push/pull volume or tone enables you to switch from the clarity of a single-coil to the fatness of a humbucking. Virtually noiseless in both modes. The EMG-89 humbucker's separate outputs give you option to utilize EMG tone enhancing accessory circuits on either pickup output.

    Features

    • Package includes:
    • EMG's exclusive Quik-Connect cable
    • Prewired push/pull volume/tone control set
    • Output jack
    • Battery clip set

Does not sound like my old SA in single coil mode

    By etherealis

    from Colorado Springs, CO

Comments about EMG-89 Split Coil Humbucking Active Guitar Pickup:

I have a Fender Strat with the EMG DG20 (David Gilmour) pickups set. I absolutely love the sounds of the DG20, but I also tend to play some Metal/Satch/Vai'ish type stuff from time to time. I have an Ibanez RG that does that well, but I wanted to see if I could have "the best of both worlds". I hooked up the 89 in the bridge and wired in a toggle switch to activate the single coil mode. Since I had an older DG20 set (which is NOT solderless), I had to hardwire the 89 (no real biggie). I was impressed with the humbucker mode. The tone was pretty much what I was expecting out of an active humbucker. It does metal really well. Now, on to the dealbreaker: I actually use my Strat as my primary guitar and the bridge single coil is VERY important to my sound. The 89 in single coil mode just didn't live up to expectations. In single coil mode, the 89 sounds lifeless, dull and doesn't have that typical Strat bridge sound. It sounds very similar to the coil split I have on my Ibanez RG (DiMarzio Evo 2), but the Evo 2 sounds better than the 89, IMO.Bottom line: I'm ripping the 89 out of my Strat as soon as I get home and I'm putting the SA back in its place.

    Coil Tap is disappointing

    By Anonymous

    from Undisclosed

Comments about EMG-89 Split Coil Humbucking Active Guitar Pickup:

I played this while trying out a Schecter Hellraiser (81TW/89 pick-ups) at Guitar Center. I should have known that getting the 81/85 sound, plus a Strat style sound was too good to be true. The pick-ups were decent in humbucking mode, although I still would have preferred the regular 81/85s slightly. I suppose the difference in sound might be due to the guitar wood or some other factor; I know EMG claims these are supposed to be identical to the original 81/85 in humbucking mode. The real disappointment was when I activated the coil tap. I know a few other people on here have said that it makes it sound just like a Strat, but I have an American series Strat as my main guitar, and these pick-ups can't touch that. The tone on these was not nearly as bright and just sounded totally dull to me. If you want a Strat sound, get the real thing. If you want the 81/85 sound, get the real thing. Don't waste your time with these.

    Stick With The Classics

Comments about EMG-89 Split Coil Humbucking Active Guitar Pickup:

I have the EMG 81TW in the bridge position and the 89 in the neck. I swapped out my 81 and 85 for these because I thought the 81TW and 89 would be the same as the 81 and 85 but with coil tap capabilities, but I was dead wrong! These pickups are horrible. I have 3 guitars, one with stock coil tap Ibanez pickups, one with Seymour Duncan Invaders, and the other with these. I am quickly changing these out for Seymour Duncan Blackouts. I had a Schecter with passive EMG's that sounded better than these. I have been a fan of EMG but these are so not worth it.

    Mediocre

Comments about EMG-89 Split Coil Humbucking Active Guitar Pickup:

I tried these in the neck and bridge position. The distortion on these sounded good close to what the 85 sounded like, but in clean tone it was nothing majorly impressive. It did produce a nice sound using both pick ups in single coil mode and vice versa however. Also keep in mind these didnt full fill my taste, I play mainly metal, blues, and country. Not horrible pick ups but not the best. Keep in mind i did play this through a schecter with a FR and through a line 6 spyder amp

    Really cool

Comments about EMG-89 Split Coil Humbucking Active Guitar Pickup:

I use single coil for some of the stuff when I play on clean which is rare but I like the sound I get. I'm not a big fan of EMG's but this pickup is very nice. I like the sound I get but I wish more guitars would come with this in the bridge because I don't like the 81. Some people may say this is more of a rhythm pickup but I would prefer it for the bridge and lead. It sounds great in the neck and is very versatile if you have all the pickups on your guitar with coil tap. It's a little pricey but in the long run it's worth it.

    Worth it...

Comments about EMG-89 Split Coil Humbucking Active Guitar Pickup:

I bought this pickup at a local music store, just looking for something better than what I had. I saw this thing and said what the hell...Anywho, I installed it and plugged it in at the bridge and...damn...it sounds great!I was completely surprised by this pickup. It was definately better than what I had before and then some...and then I figured out what a "split pickup" meant. The Humbucker mode is absolutely killer, and very much like the 85 or something. The single coil sounds like a nice strat bridge pickup.I just ordered the 81 which will go where the 89 is and thatll get bumped up to the neck. Im really excited to hear what this thing will sound like then, and when i do ill definately post whether this should be a bridge or neck pickup(im thinkin neck). but yea...get this pickup!

    Versatile.

Comments about EMG-89 Split Coil Humbucking Active Guitar Pickup:

This pickup is very hot when used in full. This is a coil tapped pickup, so you can get that Tele-like sound out of it. Also, this pickup is very responsive to type of wood you apply it too. I have this pup in the neck position on a maple bodied guitar. At times the cleans can get extremely muddy just because of the characteristics of maple. If you apply this pickup to a lighter less dense wood like mahogany or ash, then the cleans would be very chimey and natural. BUT if you're into early breakup in your cleans, this is perfect too. This pickup will push your signal, because it has equal output as an 85 in full. It's very clear and reliable. My pickup combination is what makes my Custom ESP very unique to me, because you can apply these pickups to any type of situation. If you're an EMG user or active pickup user, this is definately worth having in a guitar.
