Comments about EMG-SA Alnico Single Coil Active Pickup:
Everything is wonderful the only complaint is the price.
I just added an 81 and left the single and neck humbucker passive. After fighting the volume drop for years (yeah I am that cheap and dumb) I decided to ask a few friends of mine what would be a good single to go with and 81/85 setup. After much discussion I picked the EMG-SA. What a big and wonderful change, It really gives that metal single coil sound I missed. Just makes my Prestige sings. Warm, good clarity, and punchy. I am a strange bird as I am mostly a hardcore metal chugga guy but love to do traditional bluesy breaks...this was exactly what i needed.
Typical EMG quality. So you know the drill.
Even though I LOVE this pickup I still think it is a little on the expensive side. Look it is wires and magnet and it should be about $20-$30 cheaper. I know I am american and always want things on the cheap but I can't change that.
Comments about EMG-SA Alnico Single Coil Active Pickup:
After buying the EMG-SA, I realized that EMG as a company are so much more than just "High Gain Destroyers." They cover the tone timeline from beginning to present day, always with dead quiet accuracy with room to breathe. I don't dislike passive pickups, EMGs are just better suited for quality tone, noiseless operation with an airy quality, transparency, ease of use and installation, and overall durability than passives are.
First off, I will start with what guitar I put the EMG-SA in, and what I'm running it though because that is extremely important. I know a lot of people say "EMG's sound the same in every guitar." Well, that is just NOT true. I have tried every pickup under the sun, passive and active, and to my ear EMGs are actually more responsive to guitar change than passives are. In my opinion, EMG's are more of a highly refined, specific, quiet, tight gateway from your guitar to your amp, rather than a coloring type of thing like passives are. To each his own. Guitar - Charvel USA Production Model So-Cal. Amp - Mesa Boogie Mark V. The guitar is alder with a maple neck, and the pickups are pickguard loaded. To make this short and sweet I will say that you can NOT get any closer to a real vintage single coil strat sound than the EMG-SA. Lots of companies make "vintage strat" pickups. Most don't sound even close unless they are actually true single coils, in which then you will have to deal with 60 cycle hum. The EMG-SA sounds just like a '50s Fender single-coil, only without the noise. It is astonishing in the neck position of my So-Cal. I run an EMG 85 in the bridge. I couldn't ask for a more versatile guitar between the two pickups. I can even get my SA in the neck position to sound like an acoustic guitar. It also loves overdrive. As far as the lead in Pink Floyd's "Another Brick In The Wall Part 2," you can't get any closer than the EMG-SA. If a true vintage single coil sound without the annoying 60 cycle hum is what you're after, get the EMG-SA. As far as the Ivory Color goes, I love it but the color is really just an aesthetic thing. I would highly recommend the SA to anyone for any style of music considering it really responds to playing and style of fingering and picking more than anything. It tracks perfect from a slow rake to blazing legato.
If the EMG-SA is good enough for David Gilmour, it's good enough for you and I. EMG's always deliver. I have never had a problem with EMG's build or tone.
Between the rock solid build and highly replicated tone/sound of the pickup itself, as well as the quality solderless system, I can't think of a better value if a quiet, bubbly, fat, fast tracking and airy pickup sound that will transfer the tone/sound of your guitar is what your after.
Comments about EMG-SA Alnico Single Coil Active Pickup:
I put this in my bridge position, and it rocks! The distortion is sweet and it has a deep, usable clean tone. When you mix with neck or all three (only available through a mod) its nice and trebley. My other two pickups are passive. I hardwired the SA, and it works fine. I even grounded it, something I was told would be catastrophic, and its fine. Dont listen to the guys who say you cant mix this with passive pickups or ground it, its fine. Overall, great product.
