EMG

Developed for Steve Lukather of Toto, the SAV is an overwound pickup with hidden Alnico 5 pole pieces for tons of output and punchy attack.

EMG has worked with Steve Lukather for over 13 years now and the latest result is the EMG-SAV. Steve's playing style and writing have produced several Grammy's that EMG is proud to be a part of. They'll develop just about anything Steve wants (within reason) and that's just what happened when Ernie Ball was revising the "Luke" Guitar. Steve along with Dudley Gimpel from Ernie Ball figured they'd try some new things on the Luke. Dudley told EMG they were trying guitar pickups from other makers and they had to deliver something great to stay in contention.

EMG added their own special touch to the SAV. The windings were increased for a meatier tone and they hid away the pole pieces for a more uniform look to the instrument (see the SL20 Pro-Series). Steve has always played a specially overwound SA Pickup, so EMG used the original preamp from the SA pickup with flat Alnico 5 pole pieces hidden under the cover cap. The SA preamp gives the SAV its classic EMG sound while the flat poles put the pickup closer to the strings for more output and a punchier attack. The current EB Luke Guitar uses the model spec'd by Steve EMG calls the SLV. Steve's still with EMG: once an EMG Player, always an EMG Player.

Package Includes: EMG's exclusive Quik-Connect™ cables (3), prewired control set including volume, 2 tone controls, 5-way selection switch (black & white knobs), output jack, and battery clip, screws & springs.

Comments about EMG-SAV Alnico Single Coil Active Pickup Set:

I FINALLY got the sound I was looking for from these pickups. They do sound good, now. The instrument I have these pickups in is a US CS Strat V neck with a custom Warmoth ash s-s-s body/ Fender CS OEM trem. Easy enough to install, but I had a lot of difficulty getting the intonation right with these pickups. I spent hour after hour EVERY NIGHT working on height, depth, multiple string guages and I found that was most of the problem. I use a hybrid set 9-12-18-26-34-44 and I finally got even response, especially the mids and low end, a bit too resonant on the highs(riffs), which is partly due to the ash body. Sound good with volume rolled off and tones cut to 5 and 7 setting. I think they are worth the price if you can get them for < = $150. If you buy them, don't plan on a quick pickup change even with the no-solder install- it will take weeks, yes weeks, to get it set up and broken in. I build and maintain my own instruments, use the best parts, and rarely have problems, but this one ALMOST ended in the spare parts bin- including the EMGs! EMG should convert one of the tone pots with this set to a gain variac, to lower it, i.e. V-G-T for the pots.

Not Pleased

Comments about EMG-SAV Alnico Single Coil Active Pickup Set:

Notice, these pickups are not cheap. I purchased them for my American Strat. Bad idea. They sound awful. They almost sound like I am playing an acoustic guitar. Or, maybe a tin can. I own a lot of guitars and have every kind of pickup you can think of and they all sound better than these. Live and learn, I will have to replace these pickups for something else, because I find I won't play this strat because of the way it sounds and I hate that because it is a nice guitar.
