Comments about Eminence Patriot Swamp Thang 12" 150W Guitar Speaker:

When I bought my 6505+ 112 combo I hated it,the stock speaker is horrible sounding. After tons of research and sound clips I decided to get this speaker for it. It even even completely broken in yet and it sounds awesome alot more punchy and everything about the tone improved. More low end, better sounding leads, more clear and doesn't break up at high volumes like the Sheffield. I would highly recommend this speaker for anyone that buys the 6505+ 112.

      Old-school player's dream...

Comments about Eminence Patriot Swamp Thang 12" 150W Guitar Speaker:

While many of the new-generation, small-box 1X12" amps have great flexibility and potential, they are almost without exception equipped with British-voiced speakers - great if you're a hard-rock player with a humbucker-loaded axe, but somewhat limiting if your style is more eclectic; if, however, the sweet sound of those '60s New York "key club" amps defines your concept of electric guitar tone, but you can't locate/afford an original in decent shape, this will turn your low/mid-powered EL-84 based combo into a stage/studio classic in the mold of the original Ampeg Gemini/Reverberocket. Mine's installed in a Bugera V22 I bought about a year ago (and reviewed here at that time) and the difference is remarkable: tunes out the EL-84 harshness without sacrificing the chime, the bottom end sounds like a 2X12" (overall effect is very much like a really sweet '66 Ampeg B-12XT - Linden, NJ's Portaflex "Twin killer" - a buddy of mine owned back in the day), I don't have to go fishing for a decent tone when I change guitars - it's a plug-and-play proposition, where I can make tonal adjustments with a combination of preamp/power amp settings and playing dynamics alone - and the 102dB efficiency rating has turned this little practice amp into a lightweight stage rig for venues up to about 750 people. Lest you get the wrong idea, it'll do the drive thing too - if you use single-coils, want to dial some high-end into your tone, or have been looking for a way to capture the "brown" sound in something more friendly to your back than a 50W Plexi/4X12" rig, this is your setup. While this speaker might be overkill in a high-powered 6L6/6550-based amp, it's just the ticket for an EL-34/EL-84 combo in the under-50 watt range - and why the boutique makers haven't picked up on it as an option is beyond me. After nearly fifty years of playing I've seen it all, and it's a rare piece of equipment that will elicit my unreserved recommendation - this is most definitely one of them.

Comments about Eminence Patriot Swamp Thang 12" 150W Guitar Speaker:

Took a chance and bought two to replace the cheap, [*], celestion copy speakers that were in my new Mustang IV amp. The stock speakers were very thin and laid down with any big chord. Installed the Eminence speakers and it sounded kinda funny at first. It takes some time to break these Swamp Thangs in but let my tell you, its magic now. These speakers have more of everything, bottom, mids and the highs are nice and smooth. They are also twice as loud. Clean no break up at all. If you want that frizzy, break up stuff look elsewhere. If you play ultra clean and loud and love full tone you will not find a better speaker for the price. I love these speakers but they are very heavy.

Comments about Eminence Patriot Swamp Thang 12" 150W Guitar Speaker:

I have two old Gallien-Krueger 212gs (yep, the ones that Alex Lifeson used on the HOLD YOUR FIRE/A SHOW OF HANDS tour).

I yanked out the old Celestions and threw in a Swamp Thang in each cabinet and put an Eminence Governor in one and a Wizard in the other.

Excellent pairings for a stereo set up...

On a whim, I switched out the speakers and put both Swamp Thangs in one cab and the Wizard and Governor in the other. WOW. The Swamp Thangs were rich and creamy and dark. The G/W were open and bright. The balance was a bit too much for me, so I put a ST back in each cab and man oh man the balance is perfect for me...

I run an ISP Theta Preamp and an Engl e530 through a Rocktron Velocity 100.

The Swamp Thangs are dark. Make no mistake. But not muffled or unclear. They have a great bottom end with smooth mids and very tamed highs. They will take the ice pick out of any preamp/poweramp or head. Pair them with one of the Red Coats and you'll have an awesomely balanced, clear but full tone.

Can't say enough about how happy I am with my purchase... they keep sounding better and better now that I've had them for over a year.

Comments about Eminence Patriot Swamp Thang 12" 150W Guitar Speaker:

Although, the speaker have not yet been fully broken in, I like what I'm hearing so far while it begins to loosen up. Contrary to most reviewers who were replacing their Fender Blues factory installed speakers, I'm actually replacing the Eminence Red, White and Blue speaker out my Fuchs Ported Back Mini 112 cab.

            Why?

The Eminence RWB speaker is a great all around speaker for Jazz, Blues and American Rock. It's rated 120 Watts and it can handle a lot of power which is why I'm keeping a pair in my Fuchs 2x12 speaker cab (assigned to my 100 Watt Fuchs TDS Amp head). But that's where the RWB shines when paired with another RWB speaker. Whereas the Eminence Swamp Thang is better suited for single speaker cab application over the RWB. The ST's output is louder and the bass output is tighter which explains it's bigger magnet and why it's heavier. And although the ST is rated at 150 watts compared to RWB 120, the real differences is when you drive the speaker hard. The ST doesn't flinch when pushed to it's limits which provides tons of clean headroom. The ST acts like it's a 15" speaker with it's power handling ability and sounds like it 's a 10" speaker with it's focused, tight attack. For the Jazz, Blues and Rock lovers I can't imagine a better single cab speaker. My L5 deep melodic tones just jump out of this speaker with authority and definition. Needless to say, I like the Swamp Thing. You just need to be patient breaking this speaker in, it just takes a little time.

Comments about Eminence Patriot Swamp Thang 12" 150W Guitar Speaker:

I've heard this speaker described before as producing 'a wall of sound' and that pretty much sums it up. Got it paired with a texas heat in my 120w tube Peavey deuce, jeez it's awesome! Can't turn my pre-gain much past 1 without pissin off my whole band, ha! Combo-ed up with the texas heat it's rich, warm, fat, thick and i still have plenty of highs/mids. I'm sure by itself it's great as well. I play in e-flat and would recommend it to other fans of down-tuning. Like i said JUST STRAIT BOOMING. Both my speakers rock but i can feel extra 'pain' coming from the swamp thang side, lol...Great speaker, great value, easy decision. Eminence = best bang for buck in the bizz brother.

Comments about Eminence Patriot Swamp Thang 12" 150W Guitar Speaker:

My favorite speaker by far. It made me not need an eq pedal anymore. I tried it with a Fender Jazzmaster Ultralight, Blackheart Little Giant, Fender Bassman 20, and Henriksen Jazzamp, and it was great with all of them.
This is a loud, high powered speaker with no harshness whatsoever. With the dip at 300Hz makes it really full without being muddy, and the spike around 2kHz makes the treble very clear, but smooth.

Comments about Eminence Patriot Swamp Thang 12" 150W Guitar Speaker:

I bought a 1958 Gibson GA-40 recently which came with the Swamp Thang speaker. This amp is a sweating monster, the natural compression, overtones and multi-layered effortless tail of chord feedback was unlike anything I've heard before, in part because of the unusual 5879 pre-amp tube. GA-40s originally came with Jensen P12s of some kind. My guitar tech told me the amp would be much better with a new alnico Jensen P12N. Tried it. Nope. The ceramic Swamp Thang brings out so much more interesting, immediate and defined layers of tone it's not even close. You can pick out strings in the chords. The Swamp Thang is said to have good sustain and I certainly find that true. Maybe not the best name in the world for a speaker this good --- Eminence likes to have fun with their names --- but don't let that get in your way, the Swamp Thang is a serious speaker. A real thumper but with great definition.

Comments about Eminence Patriot Swamp Thang 12" 150W Guitar Speaker:

I went with the advice of a forum and added this speaker to my Orange 2x12 cabinet, replacing one of the factory Celestion Vintage 30 (60 watt) I will say that my cabinet is closed back 2x12 and was BOOMY since Orange puts no insulation inside whatsoever. I added foam to soften and clean it up. The result is amazing! I am running a 50 watt JCM800 and a 50 watt Crate Stealth as well as a Orange Micro Terror. All amps sounds better to me after switching out one Clestion Vintage 30 for this Swamp Thang.

The reult: deeper, punchier, more pronounced lows and nice clear highs that offer tonal characteristics outside a Celestion v30's tonal and frequency range.

Mixing speakers and addind this one turned out to be a great idea and I am so happy.

I will say that being new, this speaker won't sound impressive at first. I'd follow the advice I got and play on the quieter side of things initially to allow speaker cone material to break in. The speaker will get better, so be patient at first. The sound will improve and you'll get the intended awesome result.

By itself or paired in a 2x12 with identical, I can also see a lot of potential for southern rock and country music playing, since the speaker produces a wider and smoother frequency range than a Vintage 30, voiced more for crunch and distortion. I was playing some old classic Johnny Cash style guitar and the driving low notes are awesome for that kind of sound and style. It produces highs and lows a vintage 30 doesn't which can be good or bad depending on what you want your final sound to be. I play hard rock mostly and do like to shred it up, but also like picking on the Dead and country stuff, and this speaker does well for me.

This is a quality speaker at a great price. Check out their website for this speaker as well as others and they have all the frequency maps of each for comparison. You can find other options voiced more for your needs. Regardless, Eminence makes a great product and I am happy with what they're producing these days.
