Comments about Ernie Ball 2729 Cobalt 7-String Power Slinky Electric Guitar Strings:

I bought these strings about 2 weeks ago and I can't say that they have been the highlight of my day. Ernie Ball strings are unmatched in terms of tone and feel, they are absolutely killer for these things; however, I have a major issue with every pack of Ernie Ball strings I've bought. Ernie Ball strings in my experience have huge reliability issues, they break insanely often, and for no reason most times. I put these strings on my guitar with no issues, I play in a dropped tuning (Ab) and I had a string break no less than 45 minutes after putting the set on. I definitely wouldn't recommend these strings to anyone looking to play live sets or any other Ernie Ball string for that matter, they just aren't reliable (In my experience) especially when put up against a brand like D'Addario. However for practicing, if you don't mind spending the extra money the strings sound great and have a good feel to them.

Comments about Ernie Ball 2729 Cobalt 7-String Power Slinky Electric Guitar Strings:

I use these strings on a 6-string Schecter Diamond Series - I use the lowest 6 strings to tune down to drop Bb. I had to experiment with different gauges of the Cobalts before settling on this one - the 62s were way too big and difficult to control, and the 54s and 56s were just a tad too small/loose for the tuning I use. These 58s hit the sweet spot in the middle in terms of tightness vs playability.

The strings sound excellent - I get some killer tone out of them (I mostly play metal and hard rock), and they stay in tune nicely after a bit of break-in.

My one gripe about them is that they seem to get "grimy" more quickly than other strings - noticeable discoloration (not sure if it is oils/crud depositing in the crevices or if it is actual corrosion) causing a reduction in tone quality a little sooner than I would like. This necessitates restringing after a few weeks (although I usually tolerate it for much longer due to laziness) whereas other strings seem to last much longer. If not for this one issue, these would have gotten 5 stars for sure. I plan to experiment with other strings in similar gauges to see what kind of difference in tone I can get and whether the discoloration issue persists across different brands/types, but I may yet come back to these because of the tone and the "just-right" fit of the gauge on my Schecter.

If I find I am getting a similar issue with several types of strings, then I probably just need to change strings more often regardless of what I use. In that case I will edit this review and up it to 5 stars.

Comments about Ernie Ball 2729 Cobalt 7-String Power Slinky Electric Guitar Strings:

These strings have suited me very well. The clarity that i got melded so well with the active emg pickups on my schecter hellraiser c-7. The clarity from these strings forced me to play more clean. My leads, especially above 12th fret, have become much more distinguishable. Combined with the active pickups, its almost like each note is now easier to hear as you play a fast lead run. Its worth the money because of the improved tone for sure. Not to mention the clarity stays fresh for twice as long as regular steel or nickel wound strings.
