Comments about Evans EQ3 Frosted Bass Drum Head:
I'm really old so I've tried almost every kick batter head produced since the 60's....and in almost every imaginable situation. I've always looked for a head that will bring out natural low resonance without any boingy overtones...so I've pretty much just always had to detune down to practically nothing. This head is very unique and takes some tweaking to get right. It's so thick and flappy, it takes quite a bit of tension just to get the wrinkles out. At that point you would think it would be boingy...but no...it actually brings out low resonance in the drum and has enough tension for you to work the beater on a tight surface. Set up: Evans EQ3 Onyx resonant head (which also needs some torque to get past wrinkles) with Kickport insert, weighted pillow...on a vintage 2001 Tama Starclassic Performer Birch 22x18 kick. I'm sure it could handle anything from metal to Bonham to jazz with it's versatility. Seems crazy to be able to get tension and rumbling bottom end at the same time but it's there...and if you do want the boinginess for bebop/jazz, you can get that too with a little more tension. I can't wait to try the same setup on my prized Bubinga kick
