EVH Humbucker pickup revew

By Trev Morson

from Aurora, IL

Comments about EVH Frankenstein Humbucker:

Been gigging for 30 years playing Classic Rock and with that, a lot of Van Halen tunes. I have tone chased for years.I first had the Seymour Duncan SH12 George Lynch "Screamin' Demon", this pickup (4-conductor wire) has been used by many to get close to EVH Brown Sound. However, as close as it was, I used the equalizer controls on my Peavey 6505+ amp to get as close as I could, and, it was still a little too low end bass'ey for me and lacked some high end tone of Eddie. The SH12 at 10K I guess made it a mid output pickup. The EVH Humbucker however is 2 conductor wire and at 14K is a 'hot' pickup. I swapped them out and OMG!.. I have never found the EVH brown sound with so much ease. It gave me everything the SH12 lacked and more. I first tested it through a Peavey 5-watt practice amp, with absolutley no pedals used and the sound I got was that of Eddie Van Halen right off the bat! _ this thing is totally incredible!! Get this pick up, you will not be dissapointed, it's WAY better than the EVO DP159, the Duncan 78, the Custom-Custom and the SH12 by far!!When setting up, and pressing the string at the highest fret, place one nickel between the high e string and the pickup pole pieces, the low E string, use 2 nickels and it's that simple!!I am more than very pleased !!! - I am totally 200% ecstatic!!

Amazing

Comments about EVH Frankenstein Humbucker:

This is easily one of the best pickups ever conceived...it perfectly nails the elusive brown sound that several generations have been chasing. My guitar tech was completely stunned at how well this pickup actually sounded, despite him initially knocking it due to the price. Now that he realizes how wrong he was, he has ordered 3 to replace the pickups in some of his guitars. I highly recommend this pickup to anyone who wants not only the evh sound, but also an all-around amazing pickup that can be used for near anything.

    Comments about EVH Frankenstein Humbucker:

I just installed this in a custom Les paul jr I built, and man does this pickup put the rest to shame. On heavy distortion you can still hear some clearnity in the notes. And on clean its not to bright but also has some balls to it. The volume controle is like just ideal, smooth and gradual. the installation was easy too. I look forward to putting this in every guitar. However I do wonder how well it would function being coil split with other pickups.

    EVH humbucker

    By DSZ

    Comments about EVH Frankenstein Humbucker:

Stop looking for that brown sound and buy this one already. I plugged in, left all the amp settings on 5 (exept gain), played the opening chords of "everybody wants some" and "unchained" and it sounded perfect. No matter what amp I plug into, the perfect brown sound punches right through with no effort. For years I've been looking for the brown sound and this emulates it exactly as I always wanted. However, it can also deliver a great metal sound (jake e lee or zakk) Also, when on a clean channel, it sounds bright and clear with good harmonic response, but most importantly, well balanced. I am exceptionally happy with this pickup.

This Is the Pickup You Have been looking for. I've have been playing for 30+ and I have tried every pickup out there and like I said this is the one. I was skeptical when I ordered it but Edwards got some secret knowledge that no one else has. You won't be disappointed. If the sound is what you've been chasing than you have found it. I will be ordering more for sure.

      Comments about EVH Frankenstein Humbucker:

A guitarist, composer, and collector for 30 years, I date back to those initial years of MTV, when friends and I sat around the TV set for hours waiting with bated breath for the VJ to show us a video from the VH album 1984. For those younger players out there, it's hard to put in perspective just how huge Eddie Van Halen was, how much in awe we were of him and the way he changed guitar playing and the role of lead guitarist. No one I have ever heard, from Zappa to Fripp, played quite like Eddie, combining excellence, innovation, and originality with genuine commercial appeal. He was a revolution and a revelation in the manner of Hendrix. These days, he is taken too much for granted, quite unfairly. Back in '84, Eddie endorsed the Kramer Baretta, in an age where Kramer and Charvel/Jackson ruled, not Fender or Gibson. I bought the rereleased Baretta a few years ago, a decades old dream come true, which came with a serious Duncan JB of some sort. But it was dead sounding. I put in the Frankenstein, and the guitar popped with harmonics everywhere, with an extraordinary full spectrum of tone, and a rich, proactive sound. The Frankenstein remains the most alive and complete pickup I have ever played through. It soared, it spoke, it pulsed, it dive bombed with character, it rang, it snarled like a living thing. It may vary in sounds depending on the body wood, but it is 4 inches of pure dynamite. Install one in the bridge and express yourself!

This pup is amazing. Plain and simple. I upgraded a Charvel San Dimas Pro mod from a JB-4 to this and there is simply no comparison. Although the JB is a high quality pickup, it doesnt have the "IT" factor that this does. This and a 5150, you'll have the brown sound. Dont question yourself, just buy it.

      Great Replacement Pickup

      By MRA78

      from Midwest

      Comments about EVH Frankenstein Humbucker:

Tone....Need I say more? Eddie always talks about being a tone chaser, well this is the tone he was talking about; otherwise he wouldn't put his name on it. I bought this pickup to replace a seymour duncan TB-4 in a Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus. I replaced the stock Epiphone bridge pickup with the duncan hoping to get a tone that I would be happy with, and for the most part I was; however I like to experiment. After replacing the duncan with the EVH "Frankenbucker" if you will, I was amazed at the difference in the tone. All I can say is WOW. Saying this is a great bridge replacement pickup would totally be selling this pickup short. Buy it, try it, and I personally guarantee you will not be disappointed. Keep on Rocking!

          Comments about EVH Frankenstein Humbucker:

The pickup sounds like the early EVH sound. Sounds similar to a PAF but fuller. Has about the same output as my PAF pickups though it reads 14.2k on my meter. Through my plexi and vintage greenback cab it nails that old brownsound. Very impressed with the pickup. Also sounds great through my 5150-III amp..I love the pickup in my ash guitar, but was not impressed through my alder guitar. I highly suggest using it with an ash body or a brighter sounding wood.

          Comments about EVH Frankenstein Humbucker:

I was building a Frankenstrat replica with my son and felt that we had to use this pickup. In only made sense right? Screwed it right into the wood of the guitar and wired it to a Bourns volume pot and the testing began. Sounded great through the lead channel of my amp. Basically turned up through a Marshall or 5150 with a plate reverb and you are there. Once I got myself to quit playing old Van Halen tunes and started to try other styles I realized how awesome this pickup really is. With the volume turned down about 50%, this thing sounds like a jangly almost P90. Think maybe Green Day or Keith Urban even. Just spectacular. If you have a guitar with a humbucker, this should be the pickup in it. No exceptions.

This thing is awsome. I swapped my EMG in my Jackson Dinky with this and it sounded amazing. It nails the EVH tone with great accurcy. I have it goin through an EVH MXR Phase 90,a Dunlop Crybaby, then to a Line 6 Spider III 15w. It sounds great, but it sounds better on a big amp with lot of control to particular tones. This is a very hot pickup and it sounds great.

              Comments about EVH Frankenstein Humbucker:

This pick up sounds incredible. The fact that it goes from clean at low volume to high gain sound with a twist of the volume is mind blowing...

It has virtually no unwanted feeback at all when it's cranked. This is very surprising when you hear how loud it sounds.

I tried this pick up using my Wampler Pinnacle fully expecting the EVH tone. I was surprised that this pick up didn't sound as good as the stock 490 in my Gibson using that pedal. The gain from the pedal and the gain from the pick up was to thin sounding.... EVH pick up sounded better without the Wampler.

Surprising though my very affordable Boss SD-1 sounds much better using the EVH Frankenstein pick-up verse the Wampler Pinnacle. The Boss is low gain clipping and works better giving this just enough of a boost.

Maybe Wampler pedals don't work well using a high out put expensive pick-ups like the EVH Frankenstein.

I found out tonight after trying it the Pinnacle actually sounds better using a medium gain pick up in my Gibson. Pinnacle pedal has tons of gain maybe not suited for this kind of pick up.

The EVH pick up sounds incredible all by itself but with a little push from a SD-1 overdrive pedal nothing boutique needed and the tone in this thing is amazing, it sounds great.

If your looking for something that will sound hot yet with very controllable volume when it comes to no feedback, this is the one. You won't need a bunch of over priced pedals to help it out either because in this case less is more.

I own and used the Wolfgang pick-ups. To me they sound the same as the 490 pick ups in my Gibson.
Kind of medium gain tone perfect for using the Pinnacle pedal.

I've had the Pearly Gates, Screaming Deamon, EMG's, JB, and a bunch more I cant ever remember. This is the one. Now for the neck PU... What to do....??

Without doubt this pickup is the best for an EVH '1984' tone of all of the pickups I've tried. For me personally it's too hot for an earlier VH tone but it's still an exceptional pickup.
