Stainless strings give more fret wear. Wound strings are logically worse than flatwound for this problem. I will keep them on my bass for now, but I sure wish I could get stainless flatwound! Note: Stainless strings are better (in my opinion) for string life, and they give a brighter sound. I personally like that, as I can always EQ the sound warmer with my amp.
When I ordered the extra light Fender stainless bass strings, I thought they were flatwound. Here's the deal: The Rogue violin bass ideally needs extra light (if long scale is ordered, which is the only option) flatwound strings to sound ideal for that instrument. Apparently, such strings don't exist in stainless. I was able to get good sound with them anyway, when I turned the bass knob on my amp to max (which warmed up the sound, more like an accoustic bass). If you go to the light gauge flatwound strings, they won't fit properly in the Rogue bass, and might possibly overstress the neck.
On a Rogue violin bass, I had to clip the ends of the string a bit. Only the low (E) string had a speaking length of the string winding around the tuning peg. Not a problem to me, but this string set does not come in a middle length. As to sound, I personally like a brighter sound, and this is what I prefer.
The Fender stainless strings beat out the competition for price, and I personally like the sound. Who wants to spend twice the price for strings that you will have to change much more often?
