I used to use nylon-wound bass strings back in the day (in the 1960s, on a Vox Phantom IV) and I loved them, even though the wrapping took a beating when I played with a pick (probably wasn't that wise to use coins as picks, but . . . ). These Fender nylon-wrapped strings feel more tightly wound and better made than those first gen strings.
These add a deep, thumpy tone reminiscent of an upright bass (perfect for R&B and jazz or those '60s rock sounds of the early Stones). But they're also quite versatile. I put them on my Fender Geddy Lee Jazz Bass and these transformed the sound. I couldn't be happier (and the black wrapping goes so nicely with the Geddy's black-and-white color scheme.
The steel core gives them a slight latent ring. The nylon wrapping is a bit slick, so they're also fast. Not for everyone, but if you're looking to break away from the bright, edgy sound characteristic of roundwound strings, then give these a try. I'll have to see how long they last.
The Fender strings cost less than half the price of similar La Bellas.

I bought a used Squier Jazz Bass and was only planning to use it for a practice bass. The strings were a bit old, so I thought I would put on a set of strings that would give it a different sound than a standard set of round-wounds like I have on my other basses.

Installation was a breeze, and the feel of the strings was an immediate improvement! (Tip: Take the time while changing strings to clean and dress your rosewood fretboard with some Dunlop 65 Lemon oil!)

OK, so how will these strings sound? I was thinking they would give me a sort of thick sound similar to a Precision Bass sound, but these strings give the bass an almost growl tone - very rich and full and solid. Definitely not a thin sound by any means. I even played a few shows with these strings (remember this is a very inexpensive bass with less than top-of-the-line pickups) and I absolutely love the tone from these strings. Playability was also great for slides and other string techniques, and after playing for 4+ hours my fingers were noticeably less sore than with round wound strings.

About the only thing they do not do as well as round wound strings is handle being played really hard, almost like these strings self-limit themselves in volume and tone. But a classic slap tone sounds great with these as long as you play accurately and cleanly. (Regular round-wound strings can hide a lot more noise and these strings require more technique as you will hear all of your mistakes and not-so-perfect playing much more clearly when slapping)

Comments about Fender 9120 Nylon Tapewound Bass Strings:

I have only had the strings on my bass for about a week now, so its really tough to give too detailed of a review just yet. I will say however, that the feel and overall palyability is fantastic. I love the smooth soft feel that the wrap gives you. less noise, less click, and a rich tone. I am used to using flat wounds for that reason. I like these because I still get that punch from a round wound string with the smooth feel of flatwounds. Just cant beat it for the price in my mind.

Comments about Fender 9120 Nylon Tapewound Bass Strings:

I've been using Fender nylon tape wound strings for many years. I have them on my Fender Jazz Bass and my Martin (1999 Road Series) Acoustic Bass. They always stay in tune and I've never had the tape separate from the string. They are the best of both worlds between flat wounds and half-rounds. They always have a deep and rich sound and they are very easy on the fingers. I have previously used round wound bass strings, but ALWAYS go back to nylon tape wounds.

Comments about Fender 9120 Nylon Tapewound Bass Strings:

Ok, I bought a cheep acoustic bass and replaced the strings that came on it with brass wound strings. The sound was tinny and lots of string noise and fret rattle. Now I have a cheep bass with good sounding strings, no string noise and a sound that I can adjust with the EQ on my amp. They are too quiet for just acoustic playing but amplified sound great. I will be changing the strings on my Vantage electric bass next.

Comments about Fender 9120 Nylon Tapewound Bass Strings:

I like these strings much better than the strings that came on my Fender Kingman. They play much easier and the smooth finish makes them much quiter. I am a little disappointed in the sound. From the reviews I read I was expecting a sound much closer to an upright bass. While they do have a softer sound, I don't get the sound I expected. Also, I had to adjust the action as these strings are a little thicker and I was getting a little rattle on the upper frets.

Comments about Fender 9120 Nylon Tapewound Bass Strings:

I wanted a string form my fretless bass that could sound like round-wounds but were nice to my fretboard.

These strings were a pleasant surprise. They can snap and bite like roundwounds, but had a pleasant upright "vowel" tone.

They are perfect if you are like me and don't care for the feel and increased string tension of flatwound strings. In fact, apart from the smooth feeling of the strings, these responded to my playing like well-broken in roundwound strings--with a touch of warmness (rather than the metallic kerrang of new strings)

            Two notes:
            1) Since these strings are wrapped in non-conductive nylon, buzzing/electronic hum is not grounded by touching the strings (single coil basses can buzz when you remove your hands from the strings)

            2) the double wrapped ball end (the lumpy part of the string end) extends nearly an inch. So measure on your bass the distance from where the ball-end is held to the saddle. If it is shorter than one inch, the lumpy double wrap will sit on the saddle.

Comments about Fender 9120 Nylon Tapewound Bass Strings:

I love these strings. Be sure that you're looking for a round-wound sound. That's what they are underneath the nylon. I think the bad reviews at other sites are from people looking for a jazz sound, and these are just too bright. These are an excellent way to upgrade an entry-level bass that has "thin" sounding pickups and too much finger noise. Another advantage is they're easy on the frets.
