I have several Fender basses in the Classic and American Vintage line: a Classic '51 Precision, a Classic '50s P,and an AVRI '57 P. The '57 came with its own G&G period-correct tweed case, so I'll focus on the others.

First of all, I'm a little hard-case obsessive (even though I use a gig bag for local jobs). My first guitar had a fiberboard case, and I was not happy until I found a factory hard case for it (for what's it's worth,it was a '60s Ventura flattop).

As I progressed musically and professionally over the years, I made it a point that all of my instruments (eventually encompassing acoustic and electric guitars, a pedal steel, Dobros and basses) had a form-fit case.

When I got into Precisions the ones I bought had no case ('51 RI) or a gig bag ('50s, Godin A5)). In the case (ha ha) of the Ps, Fender offers these gorgeous cosmetically attractive cases you can mix and match to your instrument: the'51, with its "butterscotch" (aka deep yellow) looks terrific in the brown tolex/gold pile interior case, and I gigged for a long time with the fiesta red '50s in the tweed/deep red case.

C'mon! They look cool, I have had no issues for 9+ years, and they provide a lot of protection. For local gigs I use gig bags, but that's for space constraints (my combo includes a percussionist and her congas) and you can pay a lot more for other products without the history and mojo about them.

A keeper
Received today for xmas. Really the case I wanted because it's got the vintage feel and is thinner and easier to muscle around than the clunky chunky SKB sytles. I'd want an SKB for the road, but for hiking to my bud's for a party jam the larger cases are too cumbersome.

So this one is decent and it's a keeper, but I think the wood probably isn't as easy to construct cases with the way it may have been in years past. This case isn't truly square and does not stand flat on the floor, so it rocks a bit from side to side. Can you say, "'Darn, my bass fell over again."? But I'll keep the case 'cause there likely isn't one better. Latches close nicely. No blems on the tolex. Nice leather on the candy compartment. Lining is cleanly installed.

Of note, the slot for my 2001 4-string US Precision Standard seems like it's slightly displaced, because the neck does not fit exacly straight into the notch. Probably will improve as the lining flattens out in years to come. I'm not storing in the case so it's not a big deal.

Says "Fender" on the tag near the handle. Wish it had an automobile like raised Fender logo like the amps!

Case makes transporting my instrument easy and a safe place place. The case, because of its structure, will stand without falling over making loading or unloading equipment easier. It also stores easily at home. these are the best.

Comments about Fender Precision Bass Hardshell Case:

I bought this for the Fender PJ with the P body. The fit Is perfect. So perfect that you'll have to wedge your bass in until the foam panel ends deform enough. This is a good thing: no rattle, no harm. Nice.

I bought the case in tweed with the red interior. It's as beautiful as any of my old tweeds. Very standout, very classy; especially striking with the sea foam pearl bass lying in it.

The case is as rugged as any hard shell I've ever had, except for the two-ton steel flight cases (thank you Warwick: Thumb meets gig bag...). The build quality was excellent except for one minor problem: There was a badly seated staple just to the left of the handle that had abraded some of the tweed. Not enough of a problem to send it back, and fixed with a couple of taps with a ball peen, but annoying. (I've seen badly set staples near the handle on numerous otherwise excellent cases from numerous manufacturers over the last forty-odd years - guitar, bass, acoustic, mandolin, whatever. What's with that?)

Bottom line: If you have a p-body with the same dimensions as mine and want a hard shell case you likely won't find a better one unless you order a boutique custom.

Comments about Fender Precision Bass Hardshell Case:

I received this case in very poor condition from the factory, not musicians friends fault. I found a total of 6 holes in my case, 2 scratches and a scrape. I called to return it of course. Me being from Canada, I had to pay toll and cross into Detroit to pick it up, and to ship it back I had to go back to Detroit. Not a good experience and not happy with musicians friend's customer service.
