Fender 355 large triangle pick - Heavy

| Review By: Dave Ferrell | 5 months, 4 weeks ago

Features:

I grew up using these picks mainly because of the three sides. I played very hard in my younger days. Now that I'm older, I do not play as hard. I have purchased practically every expensive pick on the market but I always come back to these. I just ordered six dozen of the heavy's. I've never had a problem with their size and stiffness. I don't break them anymore but I tend to give them away and loose them.

Quality:

They hold up well.

These are good pics indeed. If I had to use Fender Brand Pics, then these would be my choice, the Mediums especially. I agree that these pics are great for playing rhythm, but whatever guitar one uses, I hope they have a stratch plate (pick guard), notably on acoustic guitars, because the sharp tips are likely to dig into the wood top overtime. Also, I've found that these pics work better with Fender Strats, Teles or replica guitars of those models. I play an Epiphone SG and I always had an issue of these picks getting stuck in the small crack of the humbucker pickup cavity, snatching the pick right out of my hand while playing. Again, these picks work better on solidbody guitars with single coil pickup cavities. I know these complaints sound trivial but take my word for it. The mediums don't really hold up that long but remember, they are made of celluloid, which is not as durable as Delrin, Ultem, Acetal, Nylon, or Lexan.

The best Fender Pick

I have used this shape in the thin and medium thicknesses. When I first saw the pick, I thought that it would be very big, slow, and awkward to hold. When I first used it, I was blown away. It is much sharper than a 351, so you can play much faster. It is also very easy to hold. Also, when one side becomes worn down, just switch sides.  The only downside is that they make much more "click" noise than other smaller picks beause of the larger body. If fender made these in an extra heavy thickness I would immediately buy a half-gross. Try these, they're great for anything from jazz to METAL. The coated delrin(Tortex, Delrex, etc.) versions are great, too.

the best pick for rhythm playing,

The mediums are outstanding picks for playing rhythm, because they're so big you can't lose them no matter how heavy-handed your strumming.  The size also allows you to use two fingers and a thumb and bring your fingers farther away from the strings, which allows you to strum faster and stronger with less motion.  It's possible to get some really cool and unique feels to your strumming by strumming at an angle down into the guitar, or angling the pick.  In a nutshell, there's lots of advantages to using these for rhythm playing (strumming), and you can do things with these picks that you can't do with others. There are, however, two drawbacks to these picks: 1) The large size and weight of the pick does slow you down when playing fast, single note runs (usually as leads), and you need to choke up a bit on it to get good control for arpeggios.  So these picks are really best suited to rhythm playing. 2) The thickness of these picks from pick to pick is quite inconsistent, and sometimes they become warped a bit if they lie around for awhile.  This is a bit annoying, and I may try some of the D'Andrea picks that are the same size for this reason.
