Comments about Fernandes Sustainer FSK-101 Humbucker Pickup Kit:
Lives up to advertised features and works well, when set up correctly.
However, the real achilles heal is the lack of customer support. Sent one eMail - receive a terse answer that didn't make sense (to myself and another Electrical Engineer with quite a few years of experience between us). Two follow up emails went unanswered (highly unprofessional). No phone support available. In the end, it worked out after patient and careful experimentation - which should not be necessary for the price the device commands. Plain and simple - customer support is nearly non-existent. Expecting the guitar technician to take financial responsibility for the results of determining correct signal flow (a signal flow diagram and/or thorough explantion of each I/O signal would be nice) is unacceptable.
If you plan to install this - either stick to the two published wiring digrams or prepare for some time consuming experimentation and bench work.
Repaired an exusting (not working) installation for a customer. Does precisely what it is advertised to do and he is very happy with it.
Pain in the neck to install. Connectors for wiring should be on the other side of the board, or the switches mounted on flying leads as the connector side of the board faces the mounting surface.
Setup takes patience to get correct sustainer response without feedback. Best to have access to back side of the board (where the 4 adjustments pots are located) without having to remove strings, etc. Setting pickup height is critical (start with recommended height - tweak from there).
Having the ability to access both modes of the device with a flick of the switch is great.
Spacing between toggles is excessive and the size of the module is pretty large (IMO). You will be removing a substantial amount of wood from the guitar body and need to choose the location carefully to avoid structural issues.
One should note that the Sustainer module controls all signal flow from the pickups. With the sustainer off - pickup signals are passed through to the normal controls. In sustainer mode, the module bypasses the selector switch. Adding features (such as coil taps) has to be carefully thought out (see comments on customer support below).
Quality of connectors and adjustment Pots are good. Board is well constructed. Solder quality is excellent.
That being said, the design is outdated. Full of through hole, axial components that the rest of the electronic industry stopped using in the late 1980's. Size of circuit could be significantly reduced (more than 2X) with update to modern SMT components. Although I recognize the hesitation of the manufacturer to make changes to a working analog circuit design, Fernandes should consider an update if, for no other reason, to reduce the amount of surgery required on a guitar.
The device is relatively expensive but, if you are after infinite sustain - this is a pretty good way to accomplish that goal that produces remarkably good results when setup properly.
Comments about Fernandes Sustainer FSK-101 Humbucker Pickup Kit:
I had this installed on my Ibanez RG350 by a professional technician. This product is the upgrade you can ever put on your axe, the big problem is the lack of technical support. First off, there was a missing wiring clip when they sent me the sustainer. There's no phone number for Fernandes technical support, just an email address. Then it will take about two to three weeks before they respond. When finally I got the right part, now I am having noise issue with my guitar. Tried to contact technical support several times but no response until today. I'm afraid my guitar has gone to waste. I wont recommend this to anybody.
