I purchased the rare earth blend sound hole pickup for my old Epiphone FT-150. The sound is rich and full, and I'm quite happy with it.
I thought it a bit strange that I had to go online to get instructions for permanent installation. (This will install and work on a temporary basis as well)
Permanent installation was rather easy. The strings need to be removed in order to do it. The only setback I had was owning many drill bits, but not a 15/32 which you will need for a good fit.
There is no soldering required. There is way more than enough wire between the pickups and preamp/end pin jack that you won't have any worries there, except where to put it all. Fortunately they thought to send a couple of sticky tape wire holders to mount inside the guitar to hold the wire out of the way.
I've only played it a few hours so far, but I'm very pleased with the sound, and it certainly beats trying to play in front of a microphone.
The balance between the humbucker and the inner mic create a very nice rich sound. My only concern is that the life of the batteries is rated at 110 hours. Not sure if that is the life once they are installed, or if it's the life of playing. We'll see.
The inner mic takes a bit of convincing to stay put once it's bent into position.
Although the wiring will remain in place, the pickup will need to be removed from the guitar to replace the flat cell batteries.
Another excellent feature is the ability to easily fade between the two elements for a personal precise blend of sounds.
The sound quality is excellent. I expect this to last a long time.
Although 3 times the price I originally intended to spend for an acoustic pickup, if it contiues to sound as good as when it came out of the box, and doesn't die for some reason, I'd say you get what you pay for.

After owning this for a few weeks now, I must say I'm still quite happy with the sound.
But I must add that I'm quite disappointed with the battery life, and the hassle of having to remove the entire pickup in order to replace them. I'd probably feel better about it if it was shipped with a years supply of batteries or something.

A highly suggested improvement to this unit would be a separate battery holder that might be attached with velcro inside the guitar body, or an addition to the pickup of a power switch to prolong battery life.

I use this pick-up with my Martin D-28 Podium anniversary guitar. It is the best pick system I have come across. You fine tune the sound by adjusting volume levels on the mike and pickup. It is really great!!!

very Nice Pick Up for Acoustic Guitar Players

By Bluesmoods

Comments about Fishman Rare Earth Blend Soundhole Pickup:

The Fishman Rare Earth Blend is a very good choice in providing warm amplification for your acoustic guitar. At times when I see a video of myself or hear a live recording, the high strings sound so darn "tiny" and over powering. This is not always the case but a big enough concern to make a mention of it. I do not have the system permanently install in my Collings Guitar so I place it on the sound hole as needed. I have it set pretty much all the time to a 50% mix mic and pick up.Overall, It is just great and almost does the Collings guitar Justice. i am having it or another system permanently installed within the next few weeks my my luthier/ Guitar Tech.. Oh, make sure you have it installed with the proper orientation. I have been in a rush at times and put it in backwards which could also be the reason for the harsh sounding higher strings at times!!Concern: The wire connector is so thin, I have had a fair amount of trouble with this and have to get it cut and re attached!! Nothing like a broken chord at an important performance! (They all are)

FINALLY!! A GREAT SOUNDING ACOUSTIC PICKUP

By me-BdpTL

from little saint simons island, GA

Comments about Fishman Rare Earth Blend Soundhole Pickup:

I can't say i've tried every acoustic pickup out there, i've used the dean markley's, lawrence, as well as played a lot of the high end taylor and martin acoustic/electic's. none of those come close to the natural warmth that this pickup can produce with the exception of the martin dc aura. but, still not nearly as good as the REB. i typically use it at 75% mic, 25% pickup cause i love the true sound and warmth that the mic produces. match this with an lr baggs venue di and you've got acoustic heaven. granted, i've only used it on my martin hd28 which is a fine sounding instrument in my opinion, but, i have no doubts that this pickup will give you a true representation of your guitar, properly eq'ed of course.

Wow!

By Woodroce

from Finger Lakes, NY State

Comments about Fishman Rare Earth Blend Soundhole Pickup:

I have been playing an amplified acoustic guitar publicly for two decades now. The first dozen years or so were rough. I had my Dean Markly and Lawrence sound hole pick ups... I had my Martin and Fishman under the saddle types... I was never happy. My guitar always sounded "tinny" to me. I also heard it from people everywhere I played. "Tinny... tinny... tinny..." I will never forget the day I got my Fishman Rare Earth Blender. I took great care installing it into my Martin D-35. When the moment came that I first heard it, I strummed a slow open E chord and it was clear at that moment I had purchased the very best pick-up for my guitar, and my ears that money can buy. I run the signal through a stereo chorus pedal and then through my stereo mixing board. What comes out of my Mackie SRM-450's is sheer heaven. If you are having trouble deciding on your next pick-up and you really don't know if you want to spend the money on this pick-up, all I can say is- you won't regret it. Everywhere I go people comment on how great my guitar sounds.Typically, I run the blend at about 70% pick-up and 30% mic. It seems to work well for me. If I get in a position where I need a little more umph out of my guitar and I can't get to the board or something, I can always turn the pick-up closer to 100% on the humbucker and get a little more juice out of it.

A great choice for a soundhole pickup!

By humongous35

from Live Oak, FL

Comments about Fishman Rare Earth Blend Soundhole Pickup:

I have used the Rare Earth Blend pickup with my Larrivee OMV-60 for almost two years now & have been very pleased with the overall sound. Love the blend switch, which of course allows me to dial in just the right balance between pickup & mic. I only have TWO complaints: First, the battery installation is AWFUL - it takes some serious juggling to get the two 1.5v batteries put in, and the strings have to either be loosened or removed altogether. The other complaint has to do with feedback when the mic is heavily engaged, although I suppose that is to be somewhat expected. Overall, a fantastic product!

Love my blend

Comments about Fishman Rare Earth Blend Soundhole Pickup:

I like the sound - Sparkly clean with true acoustic sound. Though I am primarily an electric player, I have found a solution to using a acoustic guitar in an amplified setting without feedback. truly a nice piece.
