Soft, medium, and hard style descriptions refer to break up modes of the tube for an overdriven guitar signal. The Genalex KT88 Tubes are soft-rated tubes that break up slow and have the highest amount of headroom, while hard-rated tubes break up easier and have the least headroom, yielding a heavier, harder distortion. Medium-rated tubes fall in between.

The previous review nailed it. This is the King Of the Power Tubes. Ive never used an NOS Genlex KT88 and at 500.00 dollars per tube, if and when they can be found, im not likely to. This Tube has the Harmonic richness and round, bell-like highs and cello-like lows of the best 6L6GC tubes, with the overdrive crunch and midrange drive of an EL34 , except maybe even a little more. The only Tubes in its class which compete with it are the Tungsol 6550 or the Winged C KT88. All are knockout performers, although this tube has the edge of looking like a million bucks. Thats nice in open chassis HI FI systems like a Jolida. Made at least as well as the SED KT88, maybe,even as well as some of the old, Made in Britain types, but im not getting into that argument. This is a great tube completely on its own merrits.
