These strings are very tightly focused on the fundamental tone. Over and undertones are there but are diminished/subdued. They are very solid in their attack and have great punch. They give you that classic Motown/Stax sound especially so if you put them on a Fender Precision bass.

Flatwounds have higher tension than rounds and hexcore is higher than round. GHS Precision Flats have a hex core and are quite high in tension. Don't be alarmed if you need a pro set-up and a tweek of the truss rod.

Once played in, they hold tune very well. The set is slightly unbalanced at first, but again once played in they balance out quite nicely. They are well polished and play beautifully. They will last for years if you keep them clean.

Comments about GHS M3050 Precision Flatwound Bass Strings Medium:

I've been using roundwounds on my P-bass for a while now, and never really got the tone I was after. So after hearing Ben Kenney uses these, I ran out and bought some. They sound THICK! It's just deep, smooth, sexy bass. If you're into sexy smooth bass, ala Jamerson, go for these!

Great flats

Comments about GHS M3050 Precision Flatwound Bass Strings Medium:

These flats produce a beautiful full, deep tone across the spectrum from low to mid and high. No undue string tension, great on the fingers, and also great on my jazz bass. I still get the definition and edge of jazz, but mellowed down a bit. They're great, and the price is great. BE CAREFUL to order the longest set if you have a string-thru-body bridge.

Comments about GHS M3050 Precision Flatwound Bass Strings Medium:

I've loved and used GHS Precision Flats for over 20 years. Best-sounding flats right out of the package, with no "break-in" time needed. For comparison, Chromes sound fantastic after about a month of usage, but are way too bright when new. GHS flats are perfect even when new.

So why am I deducting one star in my review? Because they don't listen to their customers. They only offer these strings in the "Long Scale +". This "Plus" length is perfect for stringing through the body, but too long to be ideal for top-loading. For many years they were offered in both the regular "Long Scale" OR the "Long Scale Plus" (+).

A few years ago they stopped manufacturing the "Long Scale". I was in contact with a GHS rep who assured me that they had received a number of complaints/comments about no longer offering the "Long Scales". He said that they were going to start selling them again very soon. They never did. (I prefer to top-load flatwound strings rather than go through the body so that there is less of a bend at the witness point. Additionally, some basses do not have the option of "Through-Body" versus "Top Load".)

Recently I was told that their position now is that they will NOT reintroduce the Long Scales, and will only sell the "Plusses". Their reasoning is reportedly that the Plusses WILL work when top-loaded because the silks at the tuner end WILL fit into the shaft of the post and still be able to be wound. While that might be true, they sure don't look as good as having the proper length of string for the bass. As expensive as bass strings are, why not sell them in the PROPER length where the silks at the headstock look more uniform??

Bottom line is that these ARE fantastic flatwound bass strings. If you plan on stringing through-body, do NOT hesitate to try these, as they are excellent. But c'mon GHS! You're a string manufacturer. Why take away a product that so many of us have been (loyally) purchasing and using for decades?!

Somewhat inconsistent quality, but will continue using these. The sound settles in after about 4-6 hours of use. Intonation is great. Like the fidelity of strings, but notice slight flaws not caught by manufacturer.

Comments about GHS M3050 Precision Flatwound Bass Strings Medium:

I bought these strings because our Fender P Bass at our church was sounding really poppy. We could not control the tone like we were hoping too. We have a digital board and all the effects needed and we still felt as if the bass was lacking. So i bought some flatwounds to try and even out the tone. Man was that a good decision! Our bass players love the tone and also love the playability of the flatwounds by GHS. Great set of strings!

Comments about GHS M3050 Precision Flatwound Bass Strings Medium:

I use these on my jazz bass and they're perfect for what I use them for! I play a lot of reggae/dub and it requires that boomy bass tone. Every other string I have tried sounds too muddy with the tone rolled off, but these still have clarity and so much response! The E string is still a little long for the scale of a Jazz Bass but I have read forum after forum and seeing others in the same situation they have not had a problem due to the flexibility of these strings. I have had them for about 2 months now and they just keep getting better!

After years of playing Rock, Jazz & Blues - my main axe is a 66 Jazz Bass strung with GHS Bassics roundwounds, my 59 Precision is a perfect opportunity to try a completely different approach - going back to the flatwound Motown sound of James Jamerson - and that's a whole, new style for me.

Comments about GHS M3050 Precision Flatwound Bass Strings Medium:

I just really like the feel of flatwounds or halfrounds. I play bass in a couple of bands that feature classic songs from the 60's & 70's and whether I use a pick or my fingers, the smooth feel of these strings is a pleasure. With the various tone controls on the guitar and most amps you can create a brighter tone that some people say is sacrificed when using roundwounds. Not an issue for me, I have roundwounds or halfrounds on 3 of my 4 basses now. GHS is a good string.

Life long roundwound user and have been very happy with GHS Boomers but decided to give flatwounds a try as I primarily play Blues now and was looking for a deeper tone. Installed these on my Jazz bass and was instantly rewarded with the tone I was looking for. Warm and deep, but still bright enough to cut through the mix. Added benefit is no more string squeaking when sliding into a note. Great strings and I'll get a set for my G&L L2500 next and see how the work with an active set up. Too bad I'll have to buy them somewhere else though as MF doesn't stock them.

I changed from rounds to these flats and my P bass sounds warm and mellow, and they also play bright and snappy when the music demands. I play blues, country and rock with picks and fingers. I will always use these flat strings from now on.

Comments about GHS M3050 Precision Flatwound Bass Strings Medium:

Play as hard as you can with your fingers effortlessly. Strings are slick not like regular strings. Good tone and fun to play.
