My Gretsch 18" bass drum came with a lifter for the back so that the pedal will hit the drum in the middle. The supplied lifter did not seem that heavy duty, so I bought the Gibraltar. It is very heavy duty and holds up the drum very well. It is a very well thought-out device. I highly recommend one for small bass drums.

I have had two of these; I purchased the second after the first was stolen. This piece of gear does improve the sound of an 18" or smaller bass drum, but there are multiple fatal design flaws and poor build quality. First, the wingnuts for the height adjustment are impossible to tighten with your fingers, and difficult even with a wrench, so height adjustment feature is useless. Secondly, the black pieces that tighten down on your bass drum hoop are not padded and will scratch the hoop. Worst of all, they are attached to the thumb screws loosely, with a screw that loosens even more as you play. This means they will rattle loudly, ruining the sound of your bass drum (especially for recording), and eventually will completely fall off. The design of this clamp makes the screws virtually IMPOSSIBLE TO TIGHTEN OR FIX. So basically it produces a loud unwanted noise, falls apart completely within minutes of use, and fails miserably at it's sole purpose. Expect 10 minutes max of usefulness from this thing.

Fatally flawed

Comments about Gibraltar Bass Drum Platform:

This product is supposed to put the beater lower vertically. While it does this, it also puts it farther away from the head, because the part that the pedal clamps to sticks out farther from the plane of the head than the edge of the hoop.

Works perfectly

Comments about Gibraltar Bass Drum Platform:

The only disadvantage is the bolts for the upper clamp are hexagonal. You need an Allen Wrench tighten them. (Bolts that fit a drum key would be a better option)
I bought this to convert an 18" Floor Tom to a kick drum.
This device does what it is supposed to do quite well. Heavy in construction, simple to use, adjustable. The upper clamp is padded, strong, and secure. Won't damage your Bass Drum hoop (I have a wooden hoop). My kick pedal mounts securely to the lower plate.
Functionality versus price-A great value.

Comments about Gibraltar Bass Drum Platform:

Without a doubt, this is the BEST bass drum riser on the market. I bought one for my 18" kick and liked it so much I bought another for my 20". I run the one for the 18" fully extended and it puts the beater dead center on the head. This little drum is now a 16x18 howitzer. I run the one for the 20" fully contracted and again the beater hits dead center. This drum is a 20x20 and very "cannonesque" to begin with. Add the riser and now you've got resonance (BOOM) along with the cannon (BLAM). I strongly recommend this to anyone using a 20" kick. BUY IT !! You'll be glad you did.
The only thing I would change is the tension screws for the hoop clamp. The knurled allen heads work okay, but a key-adjustable screw would be better.

Comments about Gibraltar Bass Drum Platform:

Some people had posted that the bottom plate creates a distance from the hoop line; all you need to do is to take the wing nuts off, swap the priority of the plates and reinstall the wing nuts. I do this for the Iron Cobra, but with my DW I need the original arrangement. Some guys have a cut the bottom plate... DON"T. You just need to adjust it that's all.

Comments about Gibraltar Bass Drum Platform:

All professional drummers must be mechanics too. I cut 3/4 of an inch off the bottom plate freehand with a grinder and a cutoff wheel. Now the kick pedal is close enough to the head to be functional. Without that modification the lift is not useable. Also; the spurs must be really long to make the drum level. No problem for a pro, but the lift is not going to work right out of the box.

Comments about Gibraltar Bass Drum Platform:

I bought one of these to replace the bass drum riser included with a Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz set's 18" bass drum. The Gretsch riser is kind of flimsy - this one from Gibraltar is a lot more substantial and stabilizes the bass drum very well.

Not enough BOOM in your 18? Get this...

Comments about Gibraltar Bass Drum Platform:

I love having an 18" bass drum, but for some time have been missing the cannon-like attack that I've had in larger drums. I tried short-shaft beaters on my pedal, and that fixed the tone, but it screws up the feel so much that I returned to standard beaters. For some time, I've been wanting to get my bass drum elevated to get the beaters back into the center of the drum. None of the other products for this purpose (cradles, lifts) looked appealing. So when I saw this, I jumped at it, and the results are fantastic...exactly what was needed. The unit I received was actually a two-piece design where you can adjust the lift between 2 and 4 inches, which was a perk over the (pictured) non-adjustable unit. It also allowed me to adjust the position of the pedal mount by flipping the two plates. This kept the pedal in the same relative position so the beaters still hit the head squarely. The only thing that kept me from giving this a 10...the knobs to tighten the platform onto the hoop CAN be tightened by hand, but it's more beneficial to have an allen wrench. I'd prefer a no-tool design, or one that uses a drum key. But overall, this was the perfect part to accomplish what I needed. The BOOM is back! No reason to get a larger (and harder to transport) drum. :)

I don't know how they overlooked the fact that the 2 screws that help secure the riser to the drum protrude out past the padding and dig into the hoop of the drum. Thanks gibraltar for putting 2 big plus signs in my kick drum hoop!

The bass drum sits higher off the floor, but it's a small price to pay for the ease of pedal action and the clarity of bass drum tone. Really, how can anyone, with an 18" kick or smaller, live without this?

Comments about Gibraltar Bass Drum Platform:

I was skeptical considering the mixed reviews. However, when I got it and attached it to my 18" kick with a Pearl P932 double pedal, the only issue that I had was the attachment plate was not thick enough for the pedal to "bite" firmly. Partly a pedal issue and easily remedied. There are plastic inserts on the hoop clamp to protect the hoop and overall sturdy construction. It lifted the drum high enough to position the beater dead center, producing a fatter and punchier sound. My spurs on the kick drum were long enough to get the front up high enough to provide the desired tilt to minimize forward beater travel. Also I think that the drum resonates better since it is not sitting on the ground.

Definitely worth the money... I put this on my 18 inch bass drum and screwed down tight. The pedal still wobbles a little bit, but not bad. It really did change the sound of the drum - A much sharper attack sound. Also, getting the base off the floor gives it more residence. Good to have and since it is not permanently mounted to the drum shell, you can easily take it on and off depending on the gig.

I used this to lift a 20" Pearl kick drum. The goal was to get the pedal to hit in the sweet spot of the batter head. In its lowest setting, it lifted the batter side of the drum so high that the drum was not level - even with the kick legs extended to the max. I actually cut the Gibralter lift down by about 1/2". That was some work, but did the trick. I gave it a "good" rating, because I think the product is well-built overall and effective - especially if you have an 18" kick drum.

While I've had 18 BD before, I had't used a riser up until I recently bought a 18 x 14 acrylic BD. I eventually worked out how to set the cradle up so that my vintage Sonor sig series pedal could attach to it unencumbered so to speak. I also have a 20" BD so I thought 'great',I won't have to adjust the beater length between using BDs. But with the acrylic (its not RCI but Pansini, they're made in Australia and a bit thinner than the RCI shell), it really boomed (clear EMAD and Remo BD reso), strange for a 18 BD. I tried a few things finally taking away the riser, allowing most of the BD to be just off the floor. This reduced the boom considerably. My next step will be to install a coated EMAD. I like a dry flat sound on the BD so maybe having it off the floor a few inches was working against that sound. I don't mind adjusting the beater, can never set up the pedal so the beater hits dead centre anyway, on any drum, always a bit to left of the pad. So for me, probably not so useful but I'll hang on to it for awhile yet.
