A lot of older cymbals were damaged by key-holing - the friction relatively soft brass against the relatively hard steel of the cymbal post wore a "notch" in the cymbal. This was more than just ugly; the cymbal would settle into that notch and would no longer spin, causing it to be struck again and again in the exact same place, reducing the life-span of the cymbal.

Back in "the day" before sleeves commercially available, we used to make 'em using 1/4" tube from the hardware store (a solution that works well). Eventually Zildjian came out with sleeves which were just 1/4" nylon tube cut to length.

The newer ones (these) have an integral washer at the bottom and are threaded at the top so they don't fall off in transport. There are two kinds, shorter and long; which you choose depends on the length of your cymbal posts, how tight you want your cymbals (I like mine as unrestricted as possible), or both.

These are cheap - buy extra. They wear out, and they are meant to. The plastic is softer than the brass, so it rather that the brass of the cymbal, gets worn away. MUCH cheaper to replace these than cymbals.

Why only four stars? They're cymbal sleeves - kind of like Dr. Scholl's shoe inserts - they may be necessary to stave off damage but you can only get so excited about them.

Way to small to fit on DW cymbal stand I guess I got the size wrong.

Comments about Gibraltar SC-19A Extended Flanged-Base Cymbal Sleeve:

The extended version is a perfect replacement for any Yamaha cymbal stand. The shorter one would have been too short. The Gibraltar version is not as high of quality as the original Yamaha but still is pretty nice. I recommend them and would buy them again.

Its thick plastic that prevents keyholing

Comments about Gibraltar SC-19A Extended Flanged-Base Cymbal Sleeve:

Lasts for years. The heavier cymbals like my 21" raw bell dry ride, after years, start eating away at the wall. Which is expected. But it's not even half way through. You'll want to cut down the tops if you like a snug fit. Not hard-Better ones out there? Ok, this is a sleeve of plastic... you cant really "outdo" a sleeve of plastic because that's all it is. Its just a sleeve of plastic. It works. Count on it

Prevent Keyholing

Comments about Gibraltar SC-19A Extended Flanged-Base Cymbal Sleeve:

A simple item that's often taken for granted, but if you want to protect your investment in Cymbals, these are worth it. Keeping extras on hand in your roadcase first aid kit, is a good idea as well.
This is a replacement for worn out sleeves I have. They're threaded inside, so they stay put. They will eventually wear out but that's the very nature of why they're available.
These are about the same quality of many original equipment parts.
Save my cymbals from "Keyholing" for this price?....a no brainer.

Comments about Gibraltar SC-19A Extended Flanged-Base Cymbal Sleeve:

Couldn't use it. It's too small. I thought it was a one size fit all but I finally understand that different cymbal stand calls for different sleeves (size).

Comments about Gibraltar SC-19A Extended Flanged-Base Cymbal Sleeve:

They're great, very long but easy enough to cut with a hack saw or something. I think I rather the sleeves without the flange on the bottom because I have a bunch of metal washers that are thinner and fit better because they can move. but these are nice enough. Especially since the selection for sleeves is slim on this website.

Comments about Gibraltar SC-19A Extended Flanged-Base Cymbal Sleeve:

When you look at key-holed cymbals from the 30's-70's, you'd have to be nuts not to use a cymbal sleeve - cheap protection for your investment. These are as good as any - they thread on (rather than just slip on) and the plastic is filled with some reinforcement (fiber glass?) that makes it so these last a long time. Keep some on hand to swap out if you wear yours down, or for that house kit that requires you to bring your own cymbals. Cheap price to protect your expensive cymbals.
