Good Single Coil Pot

Comments about Gibson 300K OHM Potentiometer Linear Taper/Short Shaft:

I got this to replace a scratchy 54 year old pot in a '64 Hagstrom II. Putting my meter on this revealed the potentiometer's ohm to be .251 not .300 That's pretty far under spec but ended up being the absolute perfect pot for these black oval PB-24-G single coil pickups in the old Hag. My dad bought this guitar new in 1965 and I know it's never sounded this punchy & strong. I even get feedback while playing with moderate gain. Besides Gibson's extremely loose tolerances on their pots this thing has a Linear taper which I knew when I bought it but though I'd mention it in this review, it doesn't have much of a roll off range being linear. From 10 to about 2 on the volume knob has very little change and then below 2 the volume is off. So I definitely would not use this for a tone control because you're going to have almost no range to roll back tone. Having said that I'm very pleased with this upgrade because this particular guitar's wiring has a on/off (killswitch) and a "Mute" switch that cuts the output by half so I really don't need to touch the volume knob. Overall it's a quality pot with just a couple gripes but I'd buy another one for a project similar to this one. It's also very reasonably priced compared to Gibson's push/pull pots.
