There is a lot of hype about the 57 classic being so much better than the 490R and I can say with certainty that is false. Neither is better, they are different. The 490 has a bit more midrange than the 57 Classic. That's it. End of story. Some folks have stated that it can get too bassy with heavy distortion. From my experiences I have also found this to be true, to an extent. First off it really depends on the type of distortion. Second off it really does take a lot of distortion until it sounds flabby. Way more distortion than I would ever use. Truth of the matter is, if you're looking for a humbucker to play jazz, blues, funk, reggae, indie, alt rock, classic rock, punk, etc then this pickup will do exceptionally well. If you're trying for heavy rock, metal, grunge, etc then this is probably not the pickup for you. In my Gibson Les Paul the cleans have a great, warm, glistening, glassy sound. With different amounts of overdrive I get anything from Jerry Garcia or Robben Ford to Santana or Dan Auerbach tones. The 498T in the bridge complements it really well. Overall it is a great Gibson humbucker.

I have a 490 in the neck position of my SG Standard, and my Les Paul Studio. I love the tone when playing clean (neck and middle positons), but when I want some overdrive nothing compares to a '57' classic for a Les Paul. I wouldn't change a thing with the SG it really does sound great clean or dirty. I am planning on replacing the 490 in the Les Paul with a '57' classic. I just love the '57'. The only actual complaint that I have with the 490 is that if you want the 4 conductor wiring you have to buy the pick up separately. I've checked new (2004) and old Gibsons that have the 490 stock and they are all 2 conductor cable. I would love to know gibson does that!

Comments about Gibson 490R Original Humbucker Pickup:

I chose this one because of the boost in power and mid to upper range. It sounds better than my stock neck 490r pickup in SG standard did. It may be wired different 5 vs 2 wires or because this SG now has 500k pots. All the other neck pickups I tried seemed dull and muddy including stock, Duncan and even tried some fat pole. The 490R is very clean and clear and has made my Bipolar SG complete. With the Dirty Fingers in the bridge and this in the neck I can switch back and forth dirty/clean with no volume loss. They also sound great together which is difficult when mixing pickups.

Comments about Gibson 490R Original Humbucker Pickup:

I changed the stock 61 humbucker (neck and bridge) on my 2014 SGJ for 490R (neck) and 500T (bridge), This 490R is the most well focus midrange pickup for neck i've never heard. Wow, i can play jazz with the 490R if i play softly, nice bass and mid response, crispy for an humbucker, not as dark mid Gibson Classic 57, i love the Classic 57 for my neck Les Paul Custom Black Beauty more classy softer sound and you can play jazz with harder playing and you will still have soft jazz sounding on my Beauty, but if i want to play classic rock with harder playing with chord and soloing, the 490R is magic on my SGJ, very precise and focus, no muddy at all, the neck classic 57 haven't the mid punch that the 490R have. I'havent try the 61 on a Les Paul but for my SGJ (maple neck) the 61 are too bright, i also try a set of epiphone classic pickup on my SGJ, darker than my 61 but lack of caracter no mid punch. The 500T is very tight response pickup, i like it on the bridge of my SGJ, ceramic pickup have more rapid response than the 498T witch is alnico 5 magnet, it's like compare the response of a ceramic speaker to alnico speaker, indispensable for metal player, the response is so rapid when you kick a simple note, sometimes it's too fast, but if i want softer response from the pickup for i just switch to the neck 490R witch have all the necessairy mid response i need for even power chord (e or f).

Comments about Gibson 490R Original Humbucker Pickup:

I had installed a 498T in the bridge of my Epi ES 339 Pro and got this 490R to go with it. While the factory Alnico Classic Pro's sounded good, these Gibson pickups took it to another level. Warm, clear as a bell clean tones and pure rock-n-roll with overdrive.....Gibson rock-n-roll that is. I was initially worried they might be to much for this guitar, but they sound fantastic, still does any genre and does it well.....I've never heard a
Gibson pickup that I didn't like....

Comments about Gibson 490R Original Humbucker Pickup:

Like my title says, go with a '57 Classic pickup. My SG came with two (except mine are in platinum/grey and are open coil) and I hated the one in the neck position! It was too bright/shrill for my style of music (Blues Rock/Classic Rock). I wanted a "woman tone" style sound, warm and mellow. The neck pickup was too glassy. However I kept the one in the bridge position, because it provides a bright tone, good for the bridge.

Comments about Gibson 490R Original Humbucker Pickup:

I have one of these in my Gibson SG. They sound alright, but are pretty muddy, I am personally okay with that when I play on it, because I just do powerchords with it. So it kind of works. But over all, its better than most stock pickups you get, so buy one if you like a kind of muddy sound to your chords. I should probably add that it isnt terribly muddy, just a little muddy.

Comments about Gibson 490R Original Humbucker Pickup:

I did a complete upgrade on a 1999 custom Epiphone Les Paul. It was golden sparkle and I couldn't resist. So I swapped a guy another guitar, knowing I would have some work to do on this one. I chose Gibson 490R and 498T for the neck and bridge respectively. I am very impressed with these pickups. Very powerful. Full, ready to crunch. Absolutely rock pups. I did some research and found that this pickup combo was on several high priced Gibson Les Pauls. So I gave it a shot. I have six other electric guitars and I swear that this is the only guitar that I have to dial the pedals back for. It just wants to rock on it's own. The pups are very powerful and full. They can sparkle if you want or they can just plain rock. I know that there are other fine pickups out there. But I am glad that I chose these. This old Epi Les Paul never sounded like this........

The 490 R and T came on my SG and I am less than pleased with them. They sound great when playing clean, but when you turn on the distortion its a different story. Noisy and undefined sounding. I know this is not my amps doing because I have played through numerous amps with this guitar, and spent hours attempting to find the heavy sound I am looking for.

Comments about Gibson 490R Original Humbucker Pickup:

I just bought an SG special with these pickups in both bridge and neck. I adjusted the pickups to be equal volume so I can switch during leads and pluged into both Fender DeVille 2 x 12 amp and Mesa Boogie Mk 3. The tone is more organic than a strat especially when distorted. Jazz, blues, rock and funk sound great so far. The real test is at my gig with my band. I think it's going to be a winner.

Comments about Gibson 490R Original Humbucker Pickup:

I play rhythm guitar in a pop/punk band, and this pickup came stock in the neck of my SG. I've had a lot of different pickups in that guitar, but I keep comming back to this one. I currently have an Angus Young signature in the bridge and this compliments it nicely. (I don't like the bridge version, the 490T, though). This pickup will give you just about any sound you want. With the tone rolled all the way down, the treble goes almost completely away and gives you a great tone that sounds great for jazz when clean or excellent for blues with a little bit of distortion. With the tone on 10 (or 11 for all you spinal tap fans), the treble kicks in and even though it's in the neck, this baby sounds like its in the bridge! It distorts a little on clean with the tone all the way up, but if you dial in your settings just right, it gives you a nice shimmer. I wouldn't reccomend it for any crazy leads or anything, but it will work in a pinch. Playing blues lead with this pickup also sounds great with this pickup with the tone around 6 or 7.Overall, this pickup is very good and very versitle. I won't be cahnging neck pickups any time soon!

I bought this pickup for and for the value, it is a fantastic pickup. I put it in a guitar with a SD SH-5 custom and the contrast of sounds is fantastic. The 490R is a warm tone that is very muddy and very good for chords. As of yet I have not played a gig with them but I look forward to their wonderful tone when I do.

For stock on my Les Paul Studio, this pickup is all that you could ask for. Clean sound full and crisp. The only thing that is not so great is that the pickup gets a little too muddy for any heavy distortion. Although, most heavy distortion is used on the bridge anyway. a Great all around pickup.

If your into vintage tone with more midrange than the 57 Classic, than this is for you. Classic Gibson tone and perfect when clean. Pretty good for rockabilly and blues styles. However, if you are a highly-distorted metal-head freak than I would shoot for something hotter. Not good for heavy metal rythm. Maybe decent for punk, but I would still look for something better.A good compliment to my 498T, but it won't stay in my LP much longer.
