There is a lot of hype about the 57 classic being so much better than the 490R and I can say with certainty that is false. Neither is better, they are different. The 490 has a bit more midrange than the 57 Classic. That's it. End of story. Some folks have stated that it can get too bassy with heavy distortion. From my experiences I have also found this to be true, to an extent. First off it really depends on the type of distortion. Second off it really does take a lot of distortion until it sounds flabby. Way more distortion than I would ever use. Truth of the matter is, if you're looking for a humbucker to play jazz, blues, funk, reggae, indie, alt rock, classic rock, punk, etc then this pickup will do exceptionally well. If you're trying for heavy rock, metal, grunge, etc then this is probably not the pickup for you. In my Gibson Les Paul the cleans have a great, warm, glistening, glassy sound. With different amounts of overdrive I get anything from Jerry Garcia or Robben Ford to Santana or Dan Auerbach tones. The 498T in the bridge complements it really well. Overall it is a great Gibson humbucker.

I have a 490 in the neck position of my SG Standard, and my Les Paul Studio. I love the tone when playing clean (neck and middle positons), but when I want some overdrive nothing compares to a '57' classic for a Les Paul. I wouldn't change a thing with the SG it really does sound great clean or dirty. I am planning on replacing the 490 in the Les Paul with a '57' classic. I just love the '57'. The only actual complaint that I have with the 490 is that if you want the 4 conductor wiring you have to buy the pick up separately. I've checked new (2004) and old Gibsons that have the 490 stock and they are all 2 conductor cable. I would love to know gibson does that!

    Great tone so far.....

Comments about Gibson 490R Original Humbucker Pickup:

I just bought an SG special with these pickups in both bridge and neck. I adjusted the pickups to be equal volume so I can switch during leads and pluged into both Fender DeVille 2 x 12 amp and Mesa Boogie Mk 3. The tone is more organic than a strat especially when distorted. Jazz, blues, rock and funk sound great so far. The real test is at my gig with my band. I think it's going to be a winner.

    Whooooo

Comments about Gibson 490R Original Humbucker Pickup:

I bought this pickup for and for the value, it is a fantastic pickup. I put it in a guitar with a SD SH-5 custom and the contrast of sounds is fantastic. The 490R is a warm tone that is very muddy and very good for chords. As of yet I have not played a gig with them but I look forward to their wonderful tone when I do.

    490R pickups are okay...

Comments about Gibson 490R Original Humbucker Pickup:

I have one of these in my Gibson SG. They sound alright, but are pretty muddy, I am personally okay with that when I play on it, because I just do powerchords with it. So it kind of works. But over all, its better than most stock pickups you get, so buy one if you like a kind of muddy sound to your chords. I should probably add that it isnt terribly muddy, just a little muddy.

    Terrible neck pickup-Go w/a '57 Classic!

Comments about Gibson 490R Original Humbucker Pickup:

Like my title says, go with a '57 Classic pickup. My SG came with two (except mine are in platinum/grey and are open coil) and I hated the one in the neck position! It was too bright/shrill for my style of music (Blues Rock/Classic Rock). I wanted a "woman tone" style sound, warm and mellow. The neck pickup was too glassy. However I kept the one in the bridge position, because it provides a bright tone, good for the bridge.

    Incredible Humbuckers; try them first!

Comments about Gibson 490R Original Humbucker Pickup:

these were amazing from the moment i received them on my new Les Paul Supreme. I love the classic tone you can get, along with the more mellow modern tones. They are great for older soft rock, but are very specialized. Overall, great pickups.

    Excellent!!!

Comments about Gibson 490R Original Humbucker Pickup:

I play rhythm guitar in a pop/punk band, and this pickup came stock in the neck of my SG. I've had a lot of different pickups in that guitar, but I keep comming back to this one. I currently have an Angus Young signature in the bridge and this compliments it nicely. (I don't like the bridge version, the 490T, though). This pickup will give you just about any sound you want. With the tone rolled all the way down, the treble goes almost completely away and gives you a great tone that sounds great for jazz when clean or excellent for blues with a little bit of distortion. With the tone on 10 (or 11 for all you spinal tap fans), the treble kicks in and even though it's in the neck, this baby sounds like its in the bridge! It distorts a little on clean with the tone all the way up, but if you dial in your settings just right, it gives you a nice shimmer. I wouldn't reccomend it for any crazy leads or anything, but it will work in a pinch. Playing blues lead with this pickup also sounds great with this pickup with the tone around 6 or 7.Overall, this pickup is very good and very versitle. I won't be cahnging neck pickups any time soon!

Comments about Gibson 490R Original Humbucker Pickup:

The 490 R and T came on my SG and I am less than pleased with them. They sound great when playing clean, but when you turn on the distortion its a different story. Noisy and undefined sounding. I know this is not my amps doing because I have played through numerous amps with this guitar, and spent hours attempting to find the heavy sound I am looking for.
