Comments about Gibson 496R Hot Ceramic Humbucker:
Boosted mids, and hotter ceramic magnets instead of the usual AlNiCo II or V, this pickup is ready heavier sounds but is still good for blues and will react to techniques used by the guitarist. It has good quality, but value might be hampered if you want a clean, Fender-single-coil-like tones via split wiring.
I have installed this pickup into a Gibson Les Paul Standard. This is one of the best pickups that I have used. I have tried many Seymour Duncans and a DiMarzio aside from the stock Gibson that came installed in the guitar. Compared to a DiMarzio The Breed neck pickup, the 496R has a more mids and the lows are boosted a little. Playing the low E string could get a little bassy. If you've been imitating other guitarist's tone, you will need to readjust.
There's nothing wrong with the pickup and its installation. Screws and springs are supplied in the box. The tape wrapping the pickup is cleanly done. The wires are also good. I didn't have problems soldering.
The 496R is definitely good value. Gibson pickups are surely more expensive than DiMarzio's. Installing this pickup with a Seymour Duncan Triple Shot, you can get more tones. Wired in series gives out the best humbucker voice. Splitting the coils either way will not give you Fender cleans easily because of the (compared to a single coil) huge boost in the mids and some boost in the lows. I recommend The Breed pickup if you want a cleaner split coil. Wired parallel, it still gives a loud sound while making it a little (just a little) glassy when compared to a series wiring.

I have this pickup along with a 500T on my Les Paul Classic. Back in the summer I purchased a new Gibson Standard LP Traditional Plus with the 57 style pickups. While they may work well for others, I disliked them so much I sent the guitar back. My recording studio has several high quality guitars, including a few Gibson LPs. I have over 45 years of listening to things that come and go. My Gibson LP Classic with the 496R and 500T pickups is my favoriate humbucker guitar, which includes a Paul Reed Smith limited edition McCarty 10 top with all rosewood neck.

I have this pup in the neck position of my Gibson Explorer. It sounds amazing for buttery leads and warm clean tones. I recommend this pup to anyone who wants a smooth and creamy lead tone. This pup sounds amazing clean too!! roll back the tone a lil and great jazz tones spill out of your fingers!!!! Get this pickup!!!!

I put this pickup and a 500T in my ESP/LTD, and it brought everything I could want and more out of my guitar. It has a very sweet creamy low end that just makes you want to cry. And it has an ultra smooth clean sound for those bluesy players. If you want a classy tone, buy this pickup!!! Spendy yes, but well worth it!

I bought an Epi Les Paul becuase I knew that one day I would upgrade it so it would be as good as a Gibson. After 10 minutes of playing with this puppy installed on my guitar, I realized 2 things:1. There IS a reason to use your rhythm toggle2. I must have been tone deaf when I first bought this guitar thinking it had such incredible sound.Don't debate the price, becuase it IS worth it to upgrade to this pickup. Just add on the matching 500t, and you will KNOW that you have never made a better purchase on your guitar.

I had a 96 les paul standard. it was ok, but adding this pickup, along with the 500T in the bridge position has made my gutair a new machine. I am getting "clean distortion", and every note cuts through.

I own a Gibson SG Faded Special that came stock with 490's, I replaced the neck pickup with the 496R and it is incredibly clear with lots of power (I replaced the bridge pickup with the Tony Iommi signature pickup, another awesome pickup). This is a great pickup, if you are looking to upgrade your guitar this is the way to go.
