Black TUSQ XL F.A.Q

What is Black TUSQ XL?

Black TUSQ XL is a proprietary material which is precision engineered under high pressure and heat. It is impregnated with Teflon throughout so it reduces the friction between the nut material and the string. It is specifically formulated to deliver the right frequencies with the optimum transfer rate to the top of your guitar every time. Because of the way Black TUSQ XL is made, it is a consistent material that is rich in tone and harmonic content.

Can I modify Black TUSQ XL to fit my guitar?

Due to Black TUSQ XL’s consistency it is extremely easy to work with. You can easily modify it with fine grit sandpaper or other commonly used shaping tools.

What is the difference between Black TUSQ XL and a TUSQ nut?

The biggest difference is that Black TUSQ XL is impregnated with Teflon; the lubrication prevents strings from binding in the slots. TUSQ is not. You get better tuning stability especially when using a tremolo or bending strings. Black TUSQ XL also has more of a midrange boost as compared to TUSQ.

Will the Teflon wear off the nut?

Teflon is impregnated throughout our nuts, so its lubricating properties will never wear out.

What if the strings start to dig into the slots?

If you’re experiencing any kind of binding, you can easily fold a piece of 200 Grit sand paper and sand the notch off. Again, being a consistent material you can file/sand the nut/saddle and you will still be working with the same quality material.

How is Black TUSQ XL different than any other material (bone, micarta, and corian) used in saddles in nuts?

Black TUSQ XL is a very resonant material. This resonance alone will give you a very full and deep sound that will amplify your tone to a whole new level. Secondly, it's a consistent material, allowing every note you play to sound just as clear and full as the next. In comparison, bone has natural grains which cause dead spots. These dead spots damp balance in tone and harmonic content. Micarta is made partially from linen and paper scraps which makes it hard to work with while corian is nice to work with but also damps sound.

You have so many guitar nuts, how do I figure out which one is right for my guitar?

We probably have a nut that either fits perfectly or is close. The best thing to do is measure your nut for length, thickness, height and, E-E spacing. Pay close attention to the E to E spacing, then check your measurements with the ones on our site. The material is easy to shape so if it's a little longer or higher, so it's no big deal to work it down a little.

Will installing a BLACK TUSQ XL (formerly Trem-Nut) or TUSQ nut change my tone?

A quality nut will improve the tonal quality of your guitar when playing open strings. It will also improve the performance of your guitar by reducing string binding and improving tuning stability.

This is the nut of choice if you need a replacement. It really does help the strings "breathe". It vastly improved my Bigsby equipped Gibson SG as far as staying in tune and if you play blues or bend strings you can't go wrong. It has been on that guitar for awhile and many sets of strings later it has retained the original string height. I also have one on my "Carter Classics" custom Tele which is a pure tone machine. The nut allows me to bend the strings to the breaking point and slide through the nut right back in tune. I gave it a 4.0 on value because it seems relatively expensive for what it is and it is compared to other nuts. Well worth it though if your about performance, functionality, and tone. Also,if you do not have the proper set of nut files/tools and experience it is highly recommended to get a reliable repair shop/tech to proerly install this part so as to get the maximum contact area with the neck/nut slot, proper string height, and radius relative to that of your fretboard.

This was not what I was expecting. I have a Gibson Epiphone Acoustic model PR-200 and it did not fit.

The slots need a lot of shaping. A LOT of shaping. I also had to sand the top and back of it before it fit.

Instead I would recommend a Carvin Guitar Standard Nut. It fit great the first time and needed way less shaping.

Comments about Graph Tech Black TUSQ XL 1/4" Epiphone Style Slotted Nut:

I was having issues with snapped strings in my Epiphone Wildkat. I bought this to put into it and filed the bridge to get any burrs in the saddles. It was an easy installation. A little bit of sanding, got it to fit the nut slot just fine, and the nut width is a hair wider than the neck width so it sticks out ever so slightly on both sides of the neck, but I can live with it.

With the infused with teflon, it does make the bigsby act a bit better. I could tell sometimes when I would hit the bigsby the string would bind in the stock nut. This one performs as expected.

This worked great for my Epiphone Les Paul Prophecy. I think the one (which broke) that came original was plastic. Just like all the videos and advise out there said, I did have to sand it down a bit to make it fit just right, but that was easy. I would give it a Pro of "improves sound", but I just don't really know if it does or not. I hope so, but I would have needed to do a before and after.

I could not tell any difference in tonal improvements, but my SG Pro stays in tune much better (which was my main reason for replacement). Install was a breeze, a little sanding was all that was needed.

I rebuilt my old 1978 Ibanez Les Paul and added this nut as part of the hot-rodding. I highly recommend this little guy! It was super easy to fit my neck specs exactly with ordinary sandpaper. Combined with a Fender rolling bridge and some locking Sperzel tuners this old battleaxe ALWAYS stays in tune, and I have not broken a string yet! My tone has not suffered at all either. I am going to put Graph Tech nuts and saddles on all of my axes!
